Rolling Stone magazine asks the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism to investigate "the editorial process that led to the publication of the [UVa rape] story."

"... Jann Wenner, Rolling Stone’s editor and publisher, said that the review would be led by Steve Coll, the journalism school’s dean, and Sheila Coronel, the dean of academic affairs.... The report will be published unedited and in its entirety on Rolling Stone’s website, and excerpts will appear in the magazine."

Good... although I feel some suspicion about this: 1. Their website will get a lot of clicks out of that, 2. Going outside is a way of getting the appearance of absolution, which they're already getting with this announcement, 3....

Left-wing journalism school to 'investigate' the errors of a left-wing magazine. I expect the impact on truth will be that of a pillow-fight.

I am Laslo.

Everywhere I turn, the reaction is doubt about the neutrality of the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.

I expect that this won't be good, for Rolling Stone or Columbia.

Why would Rolling Stone pick Columbia, when that is the widespread suspicion on the part of Rolling Stone's critics?

I think it's to give Wenner an excuse for firing the editors, reporters, fact checkers, etc. he has to fire.

I predict a "at this point, what difference does it make?" moment coming.

It also has a component of the classic WH strategy.

1. We just read about the _____ Scandal in the Papers and have no comment yet.

2. The President is angry!

3. We have established a blue ribbon commission and it would be inappropriate to comment until they finish their investigation.

4. Oh, that, that was soo last years news...

5. what scandal?

David म्हणाले...

It's like Holder investigating Obama. Useless.

David म्हणाले...

My comment was not accurate. Holder investigating Obama is useful. To Holder.

Gusty Winds म्हणाले...

Bet the Columbia Report won't mention the story was written to fill a predetermined narrative. Jackie told them what they wanted to hear.

Who needs the Dean of Columbia Journalism to figure that out?

To hire replacements that will be exactly the same.

Gusty Winds म्हणाले...

The Rolling Stone error is the same as the Dan Rather - Microsoft Word - New Times Roman scandal.

Dan Rather and his producer were given something false. They desperately wanted to be true to fit the story they were pushing about Bush 43. They were gullible and got duped. Served them right.

Same with Rolling Stone. It's been entertaining watching them ride Jackie's roller coaster.

Brando म्हणाले...

"I think it's to give Wenner an excuse for firing the editors, reporters, fact checkers, etc. he has to fire."

That's the most likely reason--puts some of the blame for the head rolling on an outside party. Perhaps some of the people he has to get rid of have enough clout and are sue-happy enough that it'll get ugly to clean them out.

Tank म्हणाले...

I think the horse has left the barn on investigating this. Anyone who's been reading Sailer, the Wash Post and others has a good feel for what happened and what the actual (pathetic) facts were. Maybe what he wants is a whitewash, like the Benghazi Report.

George M. Spencer म्हणाले...

Jann Wenner's been in the business, what, 45 years, and he needs someone to help him figure out that he himself is the problem.

The academic phrase for "fake but accurate" is "peer reviewed."

Heck, all they need to do is follow the guidelines put forth in any intro to journalism class.

We need fewer "journalists" and more "reporters".

They might want to include the fact-checker, Lisa Garber-Paul. Mollie Hemingway has a nice summary at The Federalist. It's activism masquerading as journalism.

UPDATE: The investigation is delayed pending Rolling Stone first widening all of its office doors in order for the Columbians to fit through with those damn mattresses tied to their backs.

I'm glad the Dean of the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism was available on such short notice. Good thing he didn't have any pressing duties that might get in the way of explaining the editing process to the owner of Rolling Stone Magazine.

Should submit the article to Temple where Sabrina Erdely seems to have taught journalism.

The Washington Post has completely debunked this claim, the accuser made up the whole story. They have text messages, fake email accounts, everything. The NYT reporter here or in the linked story dont seem to realize that from what I can tell.

Drago म्हणाले...

Gerrard787: "All that's left to do now is for RS to cut a $50 million check to the fraternity they slandered."

Nope.

All that's left to do now is for the lefty parties involved to sign on to the movie project and provide "technical" guidance. The screenplay will borrow "liberally" from the UVA story/Lena Dunham's story/Columbia stories and will conflate all the known "facts".

Naturally the movie "location" will be Hillsdale college or similar school, it will be the entire College Republicans group that commits the "sexual assault" (with the lead Republican character cast to mirror whichever Republican wins the nomination for 2016), and the movie (campaign contribution to the dems) will be released within 60 days of the election.

Further prediction: garage will complain (contra his opposition to Citizens United) that THIS movie represents real "Speaking Truth To Power!!!!" unlike that horrible anti-Hillary movie that should have been banned 'cuz "republicans".

Double plus good: garage will finally, for good this time, actually internalize that Citizens United was a corporation.

As was said after the bogus Duke Lacrosse Team rape scandal, "The narrative was right but the facts were wrong."

All bow before the almighty Narrative!

It should be a short report: Confirmation bias.

Dave Schumann म्हणाले...

Look for them to repeat, over and over, the argument that the story was really about UVA's administration and not at all about the brutal lurid gang rape that everyone talked about.

And so the conclusion will be "yes the thing that made the story readable and interesting was entirely false, but the story itself was great"

Is this an admission that they have no fucking idea what their doing?

PuertoRicoSpaceport.com म्हणाले...

A couple weeks ago someone put a link to Michael Lewis classic New Republic article on the Columbia School of Journalism.

Anyone who has not read it, must do so now to see how ridiculous this idea of CJS investigating RS is.

http://www.newrepublic.com/article/j-school-confidential

His [Pulitzer's] wife, a few of his colleagues and the trustees of Harvard and Columbia, who initially declined the $2 million sack dangled before them, suspected that he was not quite in his right mind. A New York newspaper editor named Horace White suggested that one might as well set up a graduate school in swimming. It took Pulitzer more than a decade to persuade Columbia to accept his money. Even then, the critics' main question was never really answered: What would they teach at the Columbia Journalism School?

And here is how its graduates are viewed in the business:

The people who do the hiring in the newsrooms echo these sentiments. “A journalism degree doesn't really carry much weight,” says Jeanne Fox-Alston, the Post's newsroom recruiting director. "In fact, we are a little bit concerned when we see that someone has taken a lot of journalism classes.” “If you can write, then you can figure out how to write journalism,” says Peter Kovaks, the Metro editor for the New Orleans Times-Picayune. The headhunters at The New York Times put it even more bluntly. “It really doesn't pull any weight,” says a staffer who works for Carolyn Lee, the assistant managing editor in charge of hiring at the Times. “All we care about is ability and experience.”,

Read the whole thing. Michael Lewis is always a good read.

Erdely herself seems to be a journalism major. She claims to have been an "Adjunct professor" of journalism at Temple and an "instructor" at U Penn.

Yeah, this investigation is gonna be great!

Not exactly. It's more like trying to co-opt some cover.
And Admin at Colombia is dumb enough to be co-opted.

Hopefully they will suggest that they hire journalists with bullshit meters. This story was unbelievable to anyone who has ever lived on the real earth

William म्हणाले...

What are the chances that Rolling Stone will do a long piece on how some otherwise blameless young man's life was ruined by a fraudulent rape charge?.....For the last two hundred years the left has scrupulously underreported the crimes of the left and has headlined the misdeeds of the right.. So far as I can tell they don't even recognize that simple, observable fact.

Jann Wenner can start turning RS in to a real newspaper by firing himself. When it comes to actual reporting of factual events they don't need fiction writers, plain old reporters and real fact checkers are far better and cheaper.
