"Caterpillar sheds his skin to find a butterfly within."
The photograph is part of one of the many murals of Austin, Texas, where I'm hanging out with some dear family members on Christmas Eve. The post title is a line from an old Donovan song. The mural is right outside a café — one of the many cafés of Austin, Texas — and inside one of the topics of conversation was song lines that we like (and why do we like what we like when we like a song line?).
"First there is a mountain, then there is no mountain, then there is."
I put that on my list of song lines I like.

Wow ! From one left wing town to another. Feel right at home ?
Watch out for the DA driving around.
I hope you are enjoying the gorgeous weather that we are currently having. Winters in Texas can be glorious.
The Allman Brothers liked to play that song for 33 minutes.
Mountain Jam
OMG! The Professor has gone Zen. Austin will do that to a person.
"Oh happy we, could we take each change so easily?
So I said I love you and I love what you do, come on do your thing"
It's not the first line--in fact it's the second verse:
If only we could always live in dreams
If only we could make of life
What, in dreams, it seems
But it's one of my favorite lines in rock music. It's from Roy Orbison's "In The Real World" on his last album. It's the sort of verse that's written by a person in early middle age--who's started to figure out that things don't always work out.
And it's surprising in its own way. Orbison hadn't written or toured for maybe 10 years before his wife pushed him to go back to his music. Mystery Girl was a hit album (it had this song on it). Sad to say Orbison had a heart attack and died just after the album came out.
You need to come back in summer and watch the bats fly out from under the Congress Avenue bridge. It's quite the sight.
Christmas lights anyone? Fireworks and Christmas lights, two things to bring out the inner child.
Going to my son's Christmas Eve party they have every year. Christmas in Mission Viejo. 80 degrees yesterday but colder today. Down to 65.
"Lord, help me to be like you, give me the grace of tenderness in the most difficult circumstances of life, give me the grace of closeness in the face of every need, of meekness in every conflict".
The Pope via Drudge link.
So are there people who believe the Pope is leading his followers to the gas chamber?
You'd think Mothra's cultists woukd lay low.
Inspired by the fictional Dr. Heiter, disturbed loner Martin dreams of creating a 12-person centipede and sets out to realize his sick fantasy. That's what the wall shows me.

A mural on the wall that doesn't involve Tupac? You certainly weren't in Modesto.

Don't miss out on the trail of lights!
There was a market on Scenic -- white=painted cinderblock, just shy of the cemetery -- that got a Tupac mural painted on its side. The owner painted over all the marginalia but left the Tupac face. That lasted about a week.

Tupac was a photographic guy who had a lot of photographs taken of him. Still, it seemed that every mural in Modesto based his likeness on only one image. This is that photo.

All the murals with his face were painted with wildly varying degrees of talent. An art piece of photos of those murals would be instructive. I don't know what they would be instructive OF, I just had the word 'instructive' jump to mind and I went with it. Talent is a variable.

According to the website, it ended on the 21st (the day before I arrived).
Donovan- underrated, IMHO
"According to the website, it ended on the 21st (the day before I arrived)."
Well, crap. We were planning on going next week. We thought it was open until the 1st, but I guess that's when they take down the tree.
Well, uhh, go see "ester's follies" if you have the time and want some political theatre.
Reminds me of the line from that old Travis Song, "Driftwood."
Nobody is an island
Everyone had to go
Pillars turn to butter
Butterflying low
The "Pillars turn to butter" line always had the imagery of pillars turning into butter, but really he was shortening [cater]pillars turn to butter[flies].
