“They kept telling us, ‘Wait, he’s coming. He’s coming,’ and I said, no, we’re not waiting. We’re not going to wait for him for a moment of silence. It happened at a certain time. That’s the time that we have to toll the bells,” Estrella said....The mayor, Bill De Blasio, only made it worse by offering an explanation: "I was just not feeling well this morning. I had a very rough night. I woke up sluggish, and I should have gotten myself moving quicker... just woke up in the middle of the night and couldn’t get back to sleep and I felt really sluggish and off-kilter this morning."
He's an idiot not to see that calling in sick was the best option. Having missed that opportunity, an abject apology was the only decent option. He thinks people will have sympathy over his struggles with a "rough night." 260 people died in a plane crash!

Lotsa "I"s in that statement. Is this guy the white Obama?
Yuck.
Give em hell, Professor. DeBlasio gets an F-.
He sounds like an absolutely typical Progressive. Is there any surprise here?
I think he has done this before, being late (and irresponsible).. he sounds like a teenager with his explanation than a mayor of a big city. How did he get elected for this job? Ah,..stupid voter syndrome.
That is a delightfully snarky piece. The Red Bull jab at the end was a nice touch.
NYC got what it voted for.
Elections have consequences.
I'd say the guy was hung over.
I'm glad that the lady went ahead and rang the bell without him. She's got moxie and self-respect. Good for her.
NYC is in for a bad patch - even by NYC standards.
De Blasio didn't play for Bear Bryant.
How late was Bill de Blasio?
#HowLateWasBdB
My father believed that being somewhere 15 minutes early was "on time." My mother was often late. Me, I tend to get to my destination at the scheduled time. Those who believe in arriving "fashionably late" are inconsiderate. Those, like Bill Clinton and Obama, who arrive late as a petty means of exerting control over others are inconsiderate assholes.
Mr. de Blasio, emails seen by Politicker showed, sometimes had difficulty waking up in the morning, as public advocate, leaving staffers waiting for hours outside his home or showing up late to morning events he had been scheduled to attend. And some cited flashes of a temper that drew comparisons with Mr. de Blasio’s failed primary opponent, City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, whose mercurial nature became a key issue in the campaign.
Several staffers noted that—as early as his HUD years through the Clinton campaign and the public advocate’s office—while coming off as wonky, Mr. de Blasio seemed less interested in policy details than big-picture ideas, delegating those tasks out to staffers who would then brief him verbally or in short “pro”- and “con”-filled memos. In at least one case, Mr. de Blasio appeared to be unaware of points raised in his own report, released with great fanfare to the press.
“He’s a surface guy, total surface. He’s not in the weeds. He’s more about the politics, not policy,” one former staffer from the Clinton campaign observed.
He's always late. What does it tell you about people who always keep other people waiting? End of story on that, except this was a time sensitive memorial service. I think they're overdone myself, but, if you're going to go, get there in time idiot.
Latest in NY; they want to make police ask permission before searching suspects:
"Please kind sir, make I place my hand here to assure that you do not have a weapon with which you can kill me?"
He is an ass. I can't believe how stupid Democrats can be,(Grubers words, not mine) by electing someone who is by his own words....a socialist/communist, who was sympathetic to the Nicaraguan Sandinistas.
Progressive manners. What did you expect?
But the liberal means well!!!
You know, I used to be late all the time. My mom and my sister still are.
It took me a long time to realize that non-excuses such as "I just can't help it, that's how I'm wired" don't cut it. True, I perceived that it would only take me X amount of time to get ready, or drive to a destination, and that self-perception was always wrong. I had to recognize that, and intentionally target early arrival in order to make it places on time.
So there are two types of chronically late people: those who haven't been smart enough to recognize they can change their behavior, and those who just don't care, who either don't see that it impacts others so they think it's "no big deal" or those who don't think that the harm it does others matters, because they themselves are more important.
DeBlasio, and Obama, are in this last category.
"I didn't sleep well"? A grown man should not be making excuses.
What a jerk. Even if you have to skip an event for a weak reason (being tired???) at least be considerate enough to come up with something better so they don't feel totally blown off.
My girlfriend in college was chronically late. She would say she was "genetically late" until the day that I said, "No, you are late because you don't care enough to be on time." She never showed up late again.
The mayor wakes up in the middle of the night, hung over, and finds that the hooker is still there, in his bed. Everyone knows that a very important attribute of the hooker is that they leave when business is done, but no: she is still there, and her breathing is kind of shallow. Maybe she's not really breathing at all.
What is the first thing a progressive does when he awakes to a dead hooker in his bed? He has sex with the dead hooker of course, then does some blow before calling for one of his assistants to help with this unfortunate situation.
Now, you can't tell the press you were late because you had sex with a dead hooker, so you translate that as a 'rough night'. But we all know what 'rough night' means: it means hung-over sex with a dead hooker and blow.
That is how he rolls.
Video of Mayor remarks but I am curious that along with American and NY state flags, the inclusion of the flag of Mexico. He makes partial remarks in Spanish and mentions the effect on the Dominican Republic along with 8 other nations.
Wiki list passengers from 7 nations and none from Mexico.
Am I missing something or is this standard NYC protocol?
Mayor de Blasio Delivers Remarks at Flight 587 13th Annual Memorial Service
You had me at "He's and idiot".
The progressives who have sex with dead hookers call it the 'Kopechne' in honor of Teddy Kennedy, but it shows how little they really know about the Hero of Chappaquiddick.
Hmmm, an inconsiderate self-centered phony with an undeserved reputation for aptitude, coupled with a surly animus against America and Americans. DiBlasio seems like a legitimate contender for the Democrat party presidential nomination in 2016.
He's the great Bill De Blasio. Time should stop for his pleasure, and so should everyone else.
I can't believe an adult responsible for an entire city would use such a lame excuse. "I had a really rough night"? Do you have a two week old or something? Because that's the only way I could conceive of accepting "I had a rough night" as a legitimate excuse.

The girl ringing the bell lost 5 family members. She had a rough night.
This guy is just an asshole.
The Sarah Jessica Parkers and Anna Wintour superficial wealthy fashionistas get what they deserve. How sad for rest of NY.
The spoiled brat left hated Rudy. This is the alternative the left celebrate. How pathetic.
Perhaps if de Blasio had spent some time in the military, he'd be early for scheduled events.
Apparently the “Bull” part was not a comment on [de Blasio's] excuses
As Glenn Reynolds says, "heh."
I smell substance abuse. Not just the history of chronic morning lateness but the whiny self-absorbed pathetic excuse-making based on the assumption that everything is always the universe's fault, and definitely isn't yours, and how could anyone imagine that it was? Sounds exactly like every single excuse-making druggie out there, except that most of them aren't the Mayor of New York City. And if it isn't substance abuse, it's self-absorption on a pathological level.

This. As a younger person, I was usually late to things. Somewhere in my twenties it occurred to me to always budget in more time, more than I thought I could possible need. Now I am usually only late if I have to wait on someone else.
If you have a stomach bug, no one wants you around.
He's an idiot. Yes.
He needs to be more respectful and sincere...like Bill Clinton.

Could be be depression too.
Wah, Wah, Wah. Grow up.
Could be be depression too.
Like the dog that catches the car?
"Could be depression too."
Yup, I guess it could.
The thing I am trying to get at that, to me, suggests drugs or alcohol in the excuse-making is the absence of personal agency: "I had a rough night" with the implication that therefore, there was nothing to be done.
It's hard to articulate, but what's missing is the concept that he is in charge of himself. Other people who have rough nights do something to handle them, especially if it happens often and they have demanding schedules. That part seems not to occur to him, just as it doesn't occur to people who are mastered by their addictions and aren't masters of themselves.
There is a doctor in a white lab coat handing out fake medical excuses. Perhaps De Blasio is not covered.
If someone wanted to do the research I think they would find that the mayor, Mr. DeBlasio, is late for everything.
Does anyone get the idea that he's never had to provide real results in the private sector? And ties to the Clintons: perfect.
Here is another deflection from him http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2014/04/least-de-blasio-isnt-george-w-bush.html
Hey, what's the big deal? George Bush was punctual. Are you saying you want George Bush to be Mayor?
What a jackass. He lowered the speed limit in the city (all boroughs) to 25mph. He really wanted 20mph. For pedestrian "safety." Then the media caught him speeding up to 30mph over the limit, but he says that his speeding is ok because it is fir HIS safety.
He will probably be re-elected.
And he takes a ferry "because it is faster in rush hour traffic" right after he cancelled ferry service to the area.

I agree. It's adolescent behavior, not Mayor of New York City behavior.
80% of success in life is just showing up on time on a regular basis.
It seems to me that lib politicians are particularly bad at showing up on time. I am thinking particularly of Bill Clinton. Aside from the increasingly obvious media coverage (think shield not reporting), what accounts fr their success.
It may depend on the meaning of the word ....

That just amazed me: This time the Bush defense is not "Oh yeah? Well, Bush did it too!" but "Oh yeah? Well Bush never did that, and see how that worked out for you?!"
Is there, as we near the end of 2014, anything any liberal can be criticized for that won't cause W to be invoked in his defense?
Fat dumb drunk and hungover is no way to go through life DeBlasio.
Take Dean Wormer's advice and lay off the sauce before a big day.
A leader drinks some pepto, puts on a suit, brushes his hair and shows up anyway acting like he's never felt better. (Then, for good measure, he throws up on the foreign dignitary. But hey, he showed up!)
I think it'll take a while for it to become fully clear what a jerk this guy is. I used to spend a air amount of time in New York and had friends there. Things have changed in my life.
So I'm going to just hold on to my schadenfreude until things become scandalous and undeniable. I'll try not to wish for one bad outcome after another.
