It's over! My long obsessive relationship...

... with SiteMeter.

It was with SiteMeter that I experienced the soaring highs of blog traffic. The first million. The first 2 million. The spikes! It was the way traffic looked on the web. It was the way I knew what the score was.

But then, a couple weeks ago, it stopped recording new traffic. My emails went unanswered. My effort to cancel premium service got no response. And now it seems that they aren't charging my card anymore. When I blogged about my troubles on November 13th, rhhardin said:
I don't like [SiteMeter] because it slows the page loading. You can see what the page is hanging on, and often it's sitemeter.
Well, I've removed the code now, and if loading picks up, that's great. Quite aside from that, my obsession with traffic checking — a 10-year mania — is gone. Yes, there are Google Stats and Google Analytics, but it doesn't have that emblematic look, the way traffic looks on the web. It's just not the same. I'm on my own now, blogging without checking traffic.

Have you noticed I've changed?!

You seem lighter. Have you changed your hair?

It sure loads faster.

Whew! I read the headline and figured for a moment I was being dumped but now I realize this other obsession of yours will continue. Win!

You've embraced Matt Taylor's shirt?

Yes. You seem free at last, thank God almighty you are free at last.

The secret will be not to take up another addiction now, like smoking. Maybe you can join a support group.

I sometimes now run without a watch.

This is a funny post title.

I was reading it and thinking of Walter Neff in "Double Indemnity".

Sample quotes:
- Look, baby, you can't get away with it.
- You want to knock him off, don't you.
- What a dope you must think I am; I think you are rotten.
- I never knew that murder smelled like honey suckle.
- I had that red hot poker.
- WIth me around, you would not have to knit.
- Etc. Etc.

I don't understand google stats but that's all to the good.

You used to love Site Meter!

pm317 म्हणाले...

Well, you are an established blogger. What or why do you care what traffic you get?

Chef Mojo म्हणाले...

Yes, Althouse is zippier now. Nice.

From yesterday Paglia said"I feel that genius and obsession be the same thing. It is rare when a woman is driven by obsession. Similarly, it is rare when a woman is a genius."

I notice you have become more SUBTLE.

On the latest Chrome browser I'm now seeing a yellow warning security bar in the comments section. Not sure if it is related to the SiteMeter change. It seems to be due to mixing HTTPS and non-encrypted elements on the same page ("This page includes resources that are not secure.") FYI.

I think that at your age of maturity Madame The Meade should cover all of your obsessions. Win, win for both of you.

Heartless Aztec म्हणाले...

I'm guessing that Meade is diggin' the change...

Without SiteMeter will you lose your status as the #1 legal blog?

Barton Keyes: Have you made up your mind?

Jackson: Mr. Keyes, I'm a Medford man - Medford, Oregon. Up in Medford, we take our time making up our minds.

Barton Keyes: Well, we're not in Medford now, we're in a hurry.

You have indeed changed. You seem even more self absorbed, as incredible as that may sound.

Indeed I am completely loaded.

The new site stats totally don't make your butt look big.

Brian McKim and/or Traci Skene म्हणाले...

When we started blogging, in 1999, we checked the stats several times a day... we were very conscious of stats. Then we checked the stats on a weekly basis... Then monthly. Eventually, after we had a "million-hit March," (in March of 2005), we stopped obsessing about hits, visitors, pages and all that stuff. We mothballed our site in April of this year, in order to write a book based on our fifteen years of content, and I couldn't tell you what our numbers are now. It's liberating.

Pay close attention to what Gideon7 is saying. Way back a few years ago, we were somehow labeled a virus site. It took us a verrrry long time to correct the error. It plagued us for quite some time. Google was no help whatever. It was frustrating. We eventually hadda switch hosts and change our entire location. Brace yourself. (Never did find out why it happened. We suspect some small person with a grudge. You don't have any of those, I suspect.)

Small people with grudges are a dime a dozen on the web. The sabotage-savvy subset is worrisome.

C'mon Ann!

Our President hears voters that couldn't be bothered to actually vote. Can't you hear the web traffic that you are getting and even the traffic of people that meant to log in and enjoy your blog but didn't have time? You are way more popular than some actual tally process shows!!
