Hit with a book.

I was looking for an image to illustrate the previous post and Googled that phrase — hit with a book — and didn't get what I was looking for but was highly amused — especially in view of the blog's emerging theme today — to find "Open carry kids book becomes a hit after being mocked by Bill Maher."

Here's "My Parents Open Carry" at Amazon, where it's "#1 in Books > Children's Books > Education & Reference > Government." The comments there are interesting, for example:
I got really excited when I found out there was a sequel coming out for the really little ones: "Goldilocks and the Three Open Carry Bears"

SPOILER ALERT: This does not end well for the blonde moocher who commits a Breaking and Entering.
AND: Here's the kind of illustration I was looking for:

Of course, in today's America, it's going to be a young female hitting a guy with a book. That's from "Buffy Season 8" which means close to nothing to me:
Roden hands her the book he was holding a couple of issues back which has the Twilight symbol on, he tells Faith that he has been promised to be protected from the coming “purge” if he gets rid of Buffy and the book will tell them how. She looks at the book and smiles, “thanks” she tells him, then hits him round the face with the book, "but I never was much of a reader."

Back in the day, before my time, they had gun clubs in schools. And people, weren't going to schools and shooting the place up. So issue.was not guns but culture.

"Buffy season 8" is sort of a joke/sort of a description by the creator of the series, Joss Whedon. The TV series lasted 7 seasons, so he's been calling the comic book line he created "Season 8". And in terms of narrative continuity, it is the continuation of the TV series, so it's a bit more than simply a sly joke; it's a statement of how it fits in the overall Buffy storyline. But that doesn't change the fact it's partially wordplay by a writer who's known for it.

Interesting that the sales spike was after a mocking Maher comment. Maybe people with sense watch him too. Hard to believe.

Maher's been pretty good on Israel.

We're allowed to hit people with books now? AWESOME. Cuz I've got this Frederick Remington coffee table edition that could beat Michael Moore back from a casino buffet...

James Thurbur wrote Open Carry Little Red Riding Hood over 70 years ago.

Moral: It is not so easy to fool little girls nowadays as it used to be.

Considering your disinterest in fiction I imagine you might be aware that Buffy the Vampire Slayer was a TV show, barely.

I consider it to be responsible for "Twilight" and the plethora of young adult vampire shows that are all over cable.

Check out the great short story "Revelation", by Flannery O'Connor.

I meant that you would barely be aware that there was such a show. I was not commenting on the quality of the show.

Thought I needed to clarify that.

Well... vampires, demons from the hellmouth, and communist literary critics, certainly.

There's also this classic 'hit with a book' from Charles Schulz:

Ann stopped watching Buffy when she couldn't resolve the Tara/Kennedy dilemma. She's been in denial ever since.

I always liked the Faith character, and Eliza Dushku has aged much better than Mrs. Freddy Prinze Jr. Maybe I have a thing for the bad-girl brunette. I always thought Veronica was hotter than Betty too.

Yeah, but it just says "Buffy" and there's a comic book picture. That made me hesitate to nail it down and, as I said, I didn't care.

I wouldn't say I'm completely uninterested in fiction. I am reading a novel right now. I watched a episode of Portlandia recently. I am in the middle of a long conversation about writing a novel, etc.

I just loathe all the clutter of dipshit stories out there. I read a lot, but mostly nonfiction.

Have you seen Camden Morrisby's bookplate depicting Samuel Johnson beating Thomas Osborne with a book?

Some of the comments on the review of the book at Amazon are quite humorous.
