ADDED: This made me think of the old line: "Washington is Hollywood for ugly people." Who started that?
The phrase appears to be an immediate descendant of one that took off in the early '90s: "Politics is show business for ugly people." It is frequently credited to Jay Leno -- but when we checked the record, it appears the late-night host always presented it as someone else's witticism: "It's like they say, 'Politics is. . .' "But Begala doesn't claim to have originated it. Rush Limbaugh says it a lot. Maybe he knows. It seems related to his longstanding aphorism "Feminism was established so as to allow unattractive women access to the mainstream of society." Nice of him not to say "ugly," no?
Who were "they"? While James Carville uttered the phrase in a 1996 Playboy interview, we found what may have been the first in-print usage of it, in a 1992 Washington Post interview with Carville's fellow Clinton-Gore strategist Paul Begala.

I clicked through a few. Baer is the token Fox Newsie. The rest are the typical multi-culti lefties.
Your fears were well founded.
Well, they may not be pretty, but they are at least diverse. I'm sure the UW approves...
Looks like a casting call for a movie based on a Stephen king novel.
In fact, Michael K, the slide show included quite a few Republicans. With some exceptions, the slide show generally confirmed that Hollywood won't find its next stars in Washington.
Stick with it. S.E. Cupp --Yabba-Dabba-Doo!
Good god, it's Punxsutawney Phil!
"Beautiful People" is an interesting phrase with some history.
Here Lennon and McCartney wax ironic:
How does it feel to be
One of the beautiful people?
Now that you know who you are.
What do you want to be?
And have you travelled very far?
Far as the eyes can see
Wow.
Note how far you get through a collection of DemoNcrats.
About 1/2 way through I gave up.
WaPo means morons.
Most of those photographs are terribly done.
Interesting that both Juan Williams' sons are Republicans, no? (yes, I did click through that far)
So now everyone will want to know who paid to be left off this list.
Not quite true, Michael K. plenty of conservatives there. Typical rightie mentality, whine, whine whine. Though Baer is pretty scary in that picture, he is a moderately attractive man.
Vicki from Pasadena
Thank god (at least in a couple of cases) that there was no swimsuit competition involved.
I lived in Washington for 34 years. Did you know that there are people who live there who do not work in Congress, the White House, or the "media"? They aren't all necessarily the beautiful people, but most of my secretaries, and an awful lot of my partners, male and female, were better looking than this bunch.
Somehow this reminds me of a standing joke my first wife and I had: "Where are standards today?" "Gaithersburg".
They're okay. But none are as beautiful as Janet, the girl who looked at 89 dickpics.
Actually, if I videotaped my reactions to the 30 WaPo beauties, they'd be pretty close to Janet's reactions to those dickpics.
I live in DC or at least Northern VA. Most of the Hill is white. 2/3's of those picks were "persons of color"
I think there was some selection bias
Two words, and a question mark:
Rand Paul?
It's a suck up piece by the Post. The little snippets about their "interests" make them seem quite boring too.
Haha. Of course the two or three really attractive women were Rs.
George Bush once told Bret Baer he had a face for radio...
if you can stomach all 30 pictures, and 4 advertisements, then it leads to a second slide show called "Animal Views".
Meade wins the thread.
"Typical rightie mentality, whine, whine whine."
You prove yourself wrong. Thanks !
This list of 30 proves the adage methinks. There are a *few* who qualify but there are also some objectively ugly people in there! Would never happen in Hollywood!
I read that the "Hollywood for ugly people" crack came from the Kennedys way back..old Joe or Jack, can't recall. They had reason to know, anyway.
Google says Paul Begala...BS.
Rand Paul had a great boy's hair, but the pic cut off too high to see if he was wearing boy's shorts.
My expectations (mostly not beautiful and mostly PC contrived) were met. Waste of time
Whoever put that together really likes cube-shaped heads.
Considering that many of them work in public relations and the media, you'd think there would be a lot more knock outs. Being good looking is part of your job if you're in public relations. You're good looking so your boss doesn't have to be......Something about this doesn't sit right. Are they angling for or rewarding sources?
Hello there, yeah, so, I saw your headshot in the Wapo and I was wondering if you do children's parties?
Danielle Sikes is trying too hard. She looks like a pleaser, which in the right context, is okay with me.
There are two or three that are rather good looking, that one gal-Indian?- has a great rack but other than that it looks like a bunch of dressed up Walmart shoppers.
