That's just what dogs do.
The dogs' anal gland has a signature scent, left on poop for example.
Loss of an anal gland is a social disaster.

We need a high tech device modeled on a dog's nose that can register olfactory data and translate it to personal health data in real time.

I had to read that twice. First I thought, OMG she's misspelled Insomnia! That can't be right as Lawyers never misspell... then I parsed the word aNOSmia...? OMG she's lost her NOSE! But her Avatar...? Yep no nose prosthetic could be that good I know. From firsthand experience. Met a biker once in the 70's called Nonose who had a riding accident. his prosthetic nose plugged in to his face with two silver pins... NOT flattering at ALL. So digging deeper into the mystery revealed that it was not the nose, but the smell that was the problem. Ann Althouse doesn't smell. While a problem for her it is a blessing for those around her. Scenting isn't like human smell.
The dogs' scenting isn't overwhelmed by a strong smell, for instance.
The strong smell is just an additional smell to the weak smell that's still there.
Hence tracking dogs.

You are a sad person. You can get these diseases from any mammal. People who don't like dogs always seemed kind of sad to me. The love of a dog is constant, their loyalty is forever. People who can't accept or understand that have a huge hole in their heart.

You can't get lots of those diseases from "any mammal." You'd have to be bitten by a mad human to get rabies, for instance.
In any case, to the extent that we can get deadly diseases from a mammal, we wouldn't let a sheep, pig or bear in the house that defecated and urinated all over the place, much less pet it, sleep with it and even kiss it (yeech!) as lots of people do.
I will say, the one thing those animals have over human babies is that we don't throw away billions trying to mis-educate them.
Having a dog changes your ideas about hygiene for the better. Also strengthens your immune system.
I've had a Doberman on my bed since 1985 and never arose with fleas.
The secret here is actually borax sprinkled as a snow on the carpets and scuffed in and left there, where it remains to this day.
Borax crystals break flea shells and the fleas die.
Some people think borax is toxic (everything in toxic) and you shouldn't do it. Well don't go out of your way to breathe the dust, I guess.
It only has to be done once to last forever.
I imagine early human olfactory communication was problematic and the primary reason for development of verbal communication. Brings to mind that post about...what was it..sniff dating?
