"University of Wisconsin-Madison police say firefighters, paramedics and divers responded to the lake near Porter boathouse about 7 p.m. Monday on a report of a man in the water calling for help."
(Here's a map of Lake Mendota with a pin at the Porter Boathouse to give you an idea of the length of the planned swim.)

A candidate for the Darwin awards.
Back in the 60's we used to surf big waves on acid. At night.
Maybe it was garage.
I'm sure it seemed like a good idea at the time. Too drunk to think straight, but at a college, he's still liable for rape charges if he went to bed with a woman who had anything to drink.
Looks like it could be 3 or 4 miles across depending on the route. It might take a strong swimmer in very good shape (who is sober) over an hour assuming there are no dangerous currents.
I don't get how a drunk guy in Madison gets written about in the Minneapolis newspaper. Doesn't Minneapolis have its own drunks?
Wait -- was he just leaving shore, or approaching?
It doesn't seem too far to swim, but I wouldn't try it while intoxicated. Also, the water might be a little cold this early in the Summer. An attempt might depend on how many motor boats are out--if they are even allowed on the lake.
Plenty of people have swum across Mendota. You can see the other side, for fuck's sake. It's not exactly the English Channel.
Why does it say the fisherman was "credited with rescuing" the man? Did he rescue him or not?
