David Sedaris tries out a Fitbit.

"I was travelling myself when I got my Fitbit, and because the tingle feels so good, not just as a sensation but also as a mark of accomplishment, I began pacing the airport rather than doing what I normally do, which is sit in the waiting area, wondering which of the many people around me will die first, and of what."

Here, you can buy a Fitbit at Amazon if you are so inclined.

My husband is obsessed with his fitbit. He averages over twenty thousand steps a day and like the author, when he is stuck in an airport now he walks. Last week at the Chicago airport he walked three miles.

Professor.

Great article. I subscribe to the New Yorker but often miss the ones you link. This was one.

I hope you read the piece on The Argosy last week. A favorite New York haunt.

Nice story, but I appreciate Sedaris. Not everyone does..
I read it to my wife who's recuperating from a knee replacement. That's why I'm reading and posting here a lot more than normal. Not that you'd notice.
I think the bitfit seems like a great idea, I might get one for myself and my wife. I think it will be a good way for her to track her recovery, once she actually starts walking.

I can't imagine what the inclination would be,...

If it motivates you to move, that's good (I guess).

But really, that Fitbit flex (the model that's shown) is just a fancy pedometer. And if you just want something that will count how many steps you take every day there are much less expensive devices available.

So, what do you get for $100.? A pedometer. And a nifty Web application.

And it is a nifty Web app. But is it really worth $100., when you can duplicate what it does for much less?

I just go to the gym every day and work my @ss off. And walk every night after dinner. I'll spend the dough on cheeeeezburgers instead.

Crack -

You didn't notice the nifty little feature that warns you when to move to the other side of the street.

Cats sleep too much. This requires technology. Put one on the remote control.

That would be The Black Man's White Walker Detection Kit™ - Missed it - probably because I'm still marveling at the special Ghetto-enhanced inhale/exhale controls,…

Well, so much for Taronto

(Note: Hence forth Best of the Web Today will appear behind the WSJ paywall...)

This "Video", which is actually just audio, of Doberman Vicki long ago howling at sirens in the dark, has a dozen plays a day very consistently.

I think people are using it as an alarm clock sound.

Or, say, you're up but your spouse is not.

NotWhoIUsedtoBe म्हणाले...

Nope. Can't wear it at work. It wouldn't survive.

My daughter gave me one for Christmas. I have not opened the plastic container part yet. What is it supposed to do?

Sedaris' fantasies of the deaths of strangers is a disturbing indicator of the progressive mind-set, and explains why they feel so comfortable with the hateful, violent and eliminationist rhetoric that spews from their proxies like OWS and MSNBC, to name two. These smug, self-absorbed jackasses just don't like anyone who isn't just like them, and they have no problems aborting lives they don't care about.

rhhardin,

Yeah, bummer about Taranto. (Though we actually do subscribe to the WSJ, and Instapundit puts up large chunks of Best of the Web essentially daily.)

The real shocker is going to be the Volokh Conspiracy going behind the WaPo paywall. Pretty soon, I think.

Give FitBit a try folks.

You can join groups to walk across the USA (virtually), walk across Australia, hike the Appalachian Trail. I am not obsessive but it's fun to see it add up. Having it on a map or real route makes it more real to me

It tracks calories, sleep, active minutes etc. Talks to iPhone app
