"The Beverly Hills Hotel is like the Clippers; the Sultan of Brunei is like Donald Sterling."

"Does that make it clear?"

Actually a very stupid analogy since the Sultan of Brunei is installing a vicious orthodoxy in his homeland, one that exacts extremely harsh punishment on homosexuals and others considered deviants to the religion of peace. Sterling does not plan to chop off any heads for disagreeing with him. Nor arms nor legs. If anything the extreme reaction to Sterling's remarks bear closer resemblance to the Sultan's actions than the other way around.

The employees of The Beverly Hills Hotel, however, will be like those victimized by Sharia in Brunei because they are in the wrong place. There will be lay-offs, suppliers will be harmed, limo drivers looking for new employ, a whole list of innocent people will be impacted because the cult of homosexuality will triumph in Beverly Hills to put a stop to the religion of peace over there in Brunei.

The Clippers will suffer nothing at all.

I hereby join Jay, Ellen, Richard and Sharon in this here boycott of that there Sultan fellow! I will NOT be staying at the Beverly Hill Hotel!

I also join these fine crusaders in their efforts to talk a lot about the climate!

Terrible, terrible metaphor. I think the Sultan of Brunei is far more a troglodyte than Donald Sterling could ever hope to be.

I doubt this will have an impact on the bottom line, though. All the rich sheiks of the world will stay at the Dorchester Properties to curry favor with his royal backward eminence.

Hollywood is *real* late to the party on this one.

"But on Monday, the famous Sunset Boulevard address attracted crowds of protesters, stars among them, amid calls for a boycott."

Good for them.

The Sultan of What?

The activities and jobs lost to the hotels will go to other hotels.

And yes, it's a terrible analogy, but effective. Establishing anti-gay/women/non-muslim law is a little different than the private utterances of a racist.

Apropos of nothing, except for hotel:
I was sitting in the Hollywood Hawaiian Hotel
I was listening to the air conditioner hum
It went mmm...
Look away
(Look away down Gower Avenue, look away)

The jobs lost will not go to other hotels. Other hotels already have staff, already have suppliers. A foolish thought.

They will be lost until occupancy regains after this passes or with the installation of another ownership regime.

As often happens with these splendid displays of our goodness, the people who will be most hurt are those who can least afford it. Housekeeping staff, the lowest paid and least skilled, are the first to go. Kitchen staff: same.

A disastrous loss of work was the result of the demonization of upscale hotels after it was discovered that bankers, the horror, held meetings at these facilities. Staff layoffs in droves. The very people the sanctimonious love the most after themselves will be harmed.

In a tangentially related development the blacklisting campaign expanded last week. No doubt John Stoddard will be by later to explain why this expansion of the blacklist is perfectly appropriate. Those concerned about blacklisting are ridiculous because blacklisting only covers high-level employees on the sole subject of gay marriage.

Why don't they attack Sharia in a way that rises above insignificant? I guess its only about self gratification in front of an adoring crowd.

The sultan must have had a change of heart. Years ago there were rumors that Brunei's biggest import was long-legged blondes for the ruling family's princes.

Attack Sharia?

I don't think so.

The left routinely falls all over itself defending sharia and minimizing it's "practices". How many feminists have we read defending the burka as liberating?

It's ridiculous.

The only thing more predictable than the left protecting their islamist partners is their knee-jerk denial of such support, despite the evidence being front and center.

It's a reasonable analogy when used to express that people are essentially organizing to boycott an owner due to his offensiveness - the Sultan in this case being represented as the more offensive do the two.

My first wife and I stayed at the Beverly Hills Hotel for a couple of days in 1975. It was a nice hotel, expensive, but not ridiculously so.

Now, my real wife wants to stay there when we next go to California. If it's really as expensive as the stories say, I may owe a debt of gratitude to the Sultan for giving me an excuse to go elsewhere. Can anyone recommend a hotel in LA owned by someone of impeccable morals, such as an Obama bundler?
