"What is the White Privilege Conference?... 3. It is not a conference designed to rally white supremacist groups."

For the annals of ambiguous conference names.

(I'm noticing this because it's it's located here in Madison.)

ADDED: "The 15th annual White Privilege Conference (WPC) will come to Madison, Wis., late this March, and Wisconsin taxpayers are being forced to foot a heavy portion of the bill."
Educators, school faculty members, nonprofit staff, students, and others are expected to attend the conference, which will be partly funded by municipal coffers, public universities, and hotel-tax revenue....

Taxpayers will also incur costs paying substitute teachers to fill in for absent educators at the four-day long conference that runs from Wednesday, March 26, to Saturday, March 29. Outside of taxpayer funding, the WPC depends on donations and fees. Registration for the entire conference can cost from $195 for a college student to $440 for a corporate attendee.

I am unimpressed with the National Review article you linked.

The more interesting question is, who is making money from this? It isn't just a annual conference. It's a year round enterprise, with speakers bureaus, traveling seminars, online courses for credit, academic "certificates," gear (hats, water bottles, etc), journals and other money generating activities.

There are likely people getting paid very nicely to put all this together. They would not be so crass as to be a for profit enterprise though, would they?

National Review basically regurgitated a short press release. There's some actual reporting to be done here.

A while back I bought an audiotape book by a New Englander who discovered that his ancestors had made their fortune through the slave trade. He came across as pathetic with all his self flagellation about white privilege. He insisted that all his family must participate in the self flagellation. The positive side is that for once he wasn't beating up on Southern Whites.

On the other hand, I worked with an OB-GYN doctor in New Mexico who was from Africa. He knew I used to live in Africa, so we had some good talks. His great-grandmother was a tribal leader in Africa who also participated in the slave trade. The difference between the white man and the African man is that the African doctor didn't beat himself up about something which an ancestor did long before he was born. Neither did he talk about white privilege.

Honest West Africans admit that. The reality is, that on the balance, the losers of Africa were sold to the slave traders by the winners of Africa. You can see why they wouldn't cheering for a massive repatriation effort. I suspect these points won't be covered in the conference.

No, the difference is the African didn't have his name plastered on the human beings he lives with, so there was no psychological damage for him regarding his country's victims.

This is precisely the type of so-obvious-it-hurts insight I was referring to whites being blithely ignorant of as they make their supposedly-world-weary pronouncements, with power and money stacked all on their side, thanks to the white supremacists they insist were so long ago but keep being found right in our own backyards, both in terms of location and time.

And far less of that money and power is rightly earned than they give themselves credit for.

The Wall Street Journal is braver than you guys:

This conclusion gives the book a cheery tone, but there are also plenty of nasty conclusions to be drawn. One inescapable judgment is, as Mr Clark says, that “a completely meritocratic society would most likely also be one with limited social mobility.” He does not say that American blacks are poor because they are black. His work implies, however, that poor blacks remain so because they are descended from people with low social competence; discrimination is irrelevant, except to the extent that it limits intermarriage with other groups. “The Son Also Rises” may not be a racist book, but it certainly traffics in genetic determinism.

That is a weakness. Mr Clark is too quick to write off the promise of recent social changes. The oldest Americans born after the passage of the Civil Rights Act are barely 50. Impressive work on the effect of good teaching or well-targeted poverty assistance suggest such programmes make a difference. Yet Mr Clark follows his logic to an unexpectedly egalitarian end. Redistribution is sensible, he argues, not in order to boost mobility but because mobility is intractably low. The cream will rise regardless, and so paying extraordinary salaries to capable workers is unnecessary. If high rates of mobility are used to excuse or justify inequality, he suggests, then the reality of low mobility implies something quite different: that great inequality serves little purpose and redistributing income from the rich to the poor might raise overall welfare at little economic cost. This makes for uncomfortable reading for those of all ideological persuasions.

I said racism and massive theft as a documented historical fact.

It does seem,…revealing, wouldn't you say? I mean, as long as you talk about Africa (even saying who blacks should be prosecuting in your view - thanks!) you're deliberately NOT TALKING ABOUT AMERICA's crimes, right?

American blacks do not "make a big deal out of being African" because - surprise - we're not. We're American. Americans descended from Africa is the best we get, thanks to slavery.

You find the Africans opinion "to be of interest" for racist notions and nothing more. The African's ignorance interests not in the least, otherwise you would've corrected them yourself, because you're an American and someone from another country was attempting to denigrate your countryman - as I have done for whites amongst my black friends and in France.

Since I didn't commit any crimes against blacks I don't expect to be held accountable for the crimes of other guys, simply because those other guys were white.

White people aren't going to be able to help black people out of poverty, if the last 60 years of wealth transfers from whites to blacks is any indication. AA isn't cutting it, apparently.

Black people are going to have to get themselves out of poverty, like all the other ethnic minorities have done in the USA. By going to work anonymously and without fanfare and slowly building the wealth to make the changes themselves. My Irish and Scottish ancestors had to deal with Anglo and Germanic bigotry in the same fashion.

You really need to address your historical grievance with the Democrat Party. They were really the ones responsible for all that stuff continuing after the Civil War.

No I didn't - you're ignorant, so everything has to be explained to you, like you're six:

This is America. A black boss is still a nigger. He's no more likely to talk to a white underling than any white above him - both are dangerous.

It's like me, here - to most of you, I'm not "really black" so you think abusing me isn't racism because you don't see it that way.

Even if the results are the same.

What whites won't do is decide to be civilized and stop torturing other people unnecessarily.

I am living in a rougher but majority white neighborhood, where the junkies and homeless are predominately white. They aren't blaming the Mexicans or blacks for their condition.

Note that the poor, rural white towns rife with meth abuse don't seek to blame outsiders of a different color, who have never lived there, for their problems.

Um, the people who live there haven't been free long enough to understand a whole lot of things - consider:

400 years of bullshit Vs. about 40 years of some kind of freedom. Less if you include Rodney King as an example of how life was like more recently.

Deny it - I dare you.

I am living in a rougher but majority white neighborhood, where the junkies and homeless are predominately white. They aren't blaming the Mexicans or blacks for their condition.

Well, again, there are these things called "facts" that keep us from getting confused on these issues. Stick with them, we'll find our way out.

The only one I ever had a problem with was a black General with a big chip on his shoulder, because he grew up in the South and came of age in the 1960s, who, despite his success, still thought that the white kids born in liberal CA were the same as the white bigots in Mississippi.

His problem was his racism towards whites he never knew before, thinking we were all the same, because of our skin color.

Crack Emcee: The Wall Street Journal is braver than you guys:

I suggest you re-read the article; you don't seem to understand what it's saying.

In the first place, the only thing remotely "brave" in that review is that it gives the thesis of Clark's book a reasonably straightforward and calm airing, and saves the conventional wisdom boilerplate (i.e. highly disputable and/or unsubstantiated claims) for the last paragraph, rather than the first dozen - viz., "Mr Clark is too quick to write off the promise of recent social changes. The oldest Americans born after the passage of the Civil Rights Act are barely 50. Impressive work on the effect of good teaching or well-targeted poverty assistance suggest such programmes make a difference."

Second - what the hell do you think either the author or the review is saying or advocating? "Redistribution" - advocated in this case to ameliorate the effects of inevitable (and arguably genetically-based) human social inequality - is not the same thing as "reparations".

It actually does take some balls to think through the implications of Clark's argument for redistribution. What's so brave about clamoring for reparations? Which, by the way, have been ongoing for the last several decades now, in various forms.

Again, the picture isn't accurate, though more cohesive than today, maybe. Blacks do know family. But use your imagination on our history and you can see that, after hundreds of years of forced separation and abandonment, etc., the idea of a traditional black family as whites imagine it during the MLK days was rarely, if ever a reality. We have unrelated "uncles" and so forth and always have - it's been the nature of our lives here from Day One. We don't know generations of relatives and never will. We mostly cope alone.

No, slavery still dictates a lot about American life, from how it's conducted to who does the conducting. It is why there are ghettos (generations of accumulated wealth went to white society during slavery and Jim Crow) and blacks have been forced to accept crime as a way of life because of it. Hey, whites did.

Are you seriously telling me black guys in hoodie sweatshirts aren't all bunched together when convenient for the violent black man narrative? C'mon Sarge, let's play nice and brave here. This clear case of bigotry you mention, from me, is being reflected back from society:

No, I'm actually sorry now, because you're being sincere and I've got to show it to you anyway:

Earlier, you mentioned Race Hustlers. In order to use that term, you have to ignore the reality these men, however flawed, have come out of. And that's not fair. It's an a-historical version of the facts, straight out of Jim Crow (known as Jane Crow) denying the Civil Rights Movement in order to frame these men as clowns. Men who come when no one else will. Men who still take on this nation.

We don't have to like them personally, but you can't take away the dignity in what they do - no, not even James Brown's former tour manager, Al Sharpton - because you're not doing it and no one else has ever been either.

Check out his family life section on more about the traditional black family.

Anyway, that's but one way of contributing - willingly staying ignorant in order to advance the racist narrative - even if you're not racist yourself. Dude, study up - it's fun and enlightening.

I was just reading about how many times Oregon wrote laws trying to keep blacks out - I was ROTFLMAO!! Did you do that? I don't think so - but it did have a direct influence on black lives and it's pretty much why Oregon is lilly white to this day.

And that's the point.

SGT Ted म्हणाले...

'Slavery" wasn't a "holocaust".

It was an economic system, one of the oldest in the world.

The idea that the USA is somehow unique in having had this economic system in place, when it was a normal part of the world economy during the time of the nations founding, is revisionist bullshit.

The "holocaust" was a genocide.

It doesn't mean that slavery is not awful or tolerable.

But, you have to use the right words when talking about it. And, you have to acknowledge the historical context of those times. Just like you have to acknowledge the historical context of 60 years ago and the players. Just like you have to acknowledge the context of today.

Lots of white folks made equal rights a fact in this nation. Abolitionists serving in the Union Army gave their lives to end slavery. White folks got hosed and dogs sicked on them and beaten and a few killed for standing up for equal rights for blacks in the 1950s and 60s. That part is always overlooked when the subject of "white guilt" and "reparations" comes up.

I can probably hail a cab quicker than Danny Glover (although it should be noted that Danny Glover has sufficient income to hail a cab far more frequently than me). But the person on the bottom of this particular status ladder is the cab driver. When some cab driver gets sent home to the DR or Bangladesh because of a robbery gone awry, you won't find Danny Glover chipping in to pay the expenses.......American blacks, despite their histrionics, are nowhere near the most mistreated people in the world, let alone America.

The rules only changed during my lifetime kids, and that's not a long time, so let's not pretend anyone has a good reason to trust you.

You already want to treat it like it's nothing which you wouldn't want from me if the roles were reversed. And you give no credit that blacks don't want to do to whites what whites have done to us.

Whites just seem to want to heckle us to death now.

Nowadays, the Gangsta is a black guy dressed in the hoodie/baggy pants uniform. Or sometimes an Italian, or Chicano in a wife beater and tats, or Russian dressed in a track suit.

So, you are seeing race where some are seeing dress and conduct and the current demographics of an ever changing underworld.

Another aspect of changing times is, it used to be that parents paid attention and didn't let their kids dress up like the hoodlums. Now, parents don't care; it's all just fashion and mindless.

It used to be if you dressed like a hood, you got treated like one. I think there's an element of that going on.

SGT Ted म्हणाले...

So, what would be fit reparations?

अनामित म्हणाले...

CE:No, I understand it perfectly - I can read AND comprehend at the same time.

OK, then maybe you can explain the connection between what the book and the review are about, and what they have to do with either the topic of this post or what you've been going on about in this thread. Because Clark's book isn't about the evils of racism or why whites should pay reparations to blacks for past injustices.

So what you meant was that you think it's brave to argue that social inequality is inevitable and very probably genetic? True, that can take balls. People get fired and witch-hunted all the time for making reasonable arguments in support of that view. Me, I'll go there no problem, but I'm not in a position where I have to worry about being sacked or struggle-sessioned to insanity for doing so.

I wonder if the annoying reluctance to use quotation marks or italics to indicate who's saying what in an exchange is heritable?

A: "Which, by the way, have been ongoing for the last several decades now, in various forms.

CM: As they should be,...

So reparations should be an eternal feature of the social order, eh? I'm sure you can get the Nice White Ladies of both sexes who do things like attend "white privilege" conferences to simper along sympathetically with this view. Good luck keeping 'em coming as the demographics change and the economy keeps grinding down the middle-class.

I have to say that I really don't buy the "legacy of slavery" excuse for the black family disintegration since the 1960s, since the black marriage rate was higher and the out of wedlock birth rate lower prior to that. I think it's a cop-out.

That one I lay firmly on whites that passed the Great Society welfare laws that made it profitable for women to kick the men, of any color, out of the family home.

The white marriage rate began to decline and the out of wedlock birth rate went up at the same time.

'Slavery" wasn't a "holocaust".

It was an economic system, one of the oldest in the world.

Involving the brutal treatment of human beings. Last count for blacks - 125 million. I'd say that's a Holocaust.

And you "sound Nazi" denying it.

The idea that the USA is somehow unique in having had this economic system in place, when it was a normal part of the world economy during the time of the nations founding, is revisionist bullshit.

No - the U.S. was unique in how it carried it out, specifically as applied to blacks - that's why it was known as "the peculiar institution". Nobody did slavery quite like America did slavery.

But, you have to use the right words when talking about it. And, you have to acknowledge the historical context of those times. Just like you have to acknowledge the historical context of 60 years ago and the players. Just like you have to acknowledge the context of today.

I acknowledge all of that - and I watched MLK's funeral live - so where does the line called "the end" begin, because me and mine expect justice for what came before it was over?

Lots of white folks made equal rights a fact in this nation. Abolitionists serving in the Union Army gave their lives to end slavery. White folks got hosed and dogs sicked on them and beaten and a few killed for standing up for equal rights for blacks in the 1950s and 60s. That part is always overlooked when the subject of "white guilt" and "reparations" comes up.

No it isn't, but that's a choice - they were joining a movement already in motion because it was black people fighting for their own lives who were leading it. And every time blacks make any advance, they abandon us - that's the story of 40 Acres and a Mule and everything since - so please, if you don't want to wallow in the past, the work of whites can sometimes be a good place to start because blacks would be a lot farther if the weren't so feckless.

Hell, I wouldn't be the only one defending this position here.

Crack is using a leftwing social justice argument to lay claim to other peoples money, I think. And it relies on a guilty conscience to buy into.

I get it; rights were violated. What's the usual recourse when someone's rights are violated and has that remedy been pursued? If not, why not?

Do we get a membership discount if we supported Affirmative Action?

How about States that weren't slave states? Do they get a discount?

I smell grievance mongering. Get in line: I'm still waiting on getting MINE back from the Brits, the Catholics, the Protestants, the Germans and a few others.

You guys are no different than the whites we see screaming here. Why you think you are, I have no idea. Your views are the same. Stopping blacks from justice is still the name of the game. Heckling us is still the name of the game. Lying, deception, changing history - physical attacks - it's all the same.

Since Trayvon Martin was killed, two brothers recently got murdered by a white man on the new property they just bought. The white man said he thought they we coming to steal from him. Jonathan Ferrell ran to police for help after a car accident and died in a hail of bullets. Renisha McBride went in search of help after a car accident and got a shotgun blast to the face. Really? You want to look at this thread and tell me the whites appreciate anything about what I'm saying? Even a little? We know it's not absurd because - as a white person pointed out - it's already being discussed in several places at once as we speak. But, instead, this Althouse crew resorts to heckling. Well, I've got news for them:

The difference between black culture and yours is obviously caring about someone else in this damned country, whether it be blacks crawling out of poverty or whites still with no discernible souls to speak of.

Laugh it up - only only cheapen yourselves. Freedom don't stop.

I've read about murders where the victim brought fists to a gun fight. It happens a lot.

I'm not sure what Zimmerman has to do with whites being complicit with racist lynchings, since he isn't white.

From what I have read, he was a mixed race nutbar. Which is why I distrust the racialist accounts of this homicide.

Were I ever in a tussle with a guy on top of me starting to pound my head into the pavement, and I had a gun, I'd probably use it. That's a deadly force situation.

I am honestly trying to understand you. You state that you require access to the Treasury for these crimes. I ask: How much?

And, if you cannot respect for my point of view, or even be bothered to articulate your own, why should yours be considered?

“There is another class of coloured people who make a business of keeping the troubles, the wrongs, and the hardships of the Negro race before the public. Having learned that they are able to make a living out of their troubles, they have grown into the settled habit of advertising their wrongs — partly because they want sympathy and partly because it pays. Some of these people do not want the Negro to lose his grievances, because they do not want to lose their jobs.”
