The "Calvin and Hobbes" artist Bill Watterson draws a movie poster.

Watterson describes his thinking:
Given the movie's title and the fact that there are few things funnier than human nudity, the idea popped into my head largely intact. The film is a big valentine to comics, so I tried to do something really cartoon-y.
I thought it was an intentional reference to the famous R. Crumb first-issue-of-"Zap" cover

Needs a Rape Trigger warning for Wellesley students. Other than that, I like the poster.

Oooh! I drew my own homage to Crumb's ZAP Cover! If I can figure out a way to do it, I'll try to post it here.

I miss CALVIN AND HOBBES, too, but a more recent discontinued brilliant comic strip that I lament is Richard Thompson's CUL DE SAC.

Beautifully drawn and written, Watterson wrote a glowing introduction for the first book collection of CUL DE SAC strips. Thompson had to give up the strip in the past year due to a diagnosis of Parkinson's Disease, which has rendered him unable to draw.

For those who might sample the strip online and decide they want more, a complete two-volume collection of CUL DE SAC is due to be published in the next month or two.

One part of me is grateful for the contribution.

The other part of me wants to hit Bill Watterson over the head with Gary Larson and point out if Arianaa Huffington can figure out modern media, cartoonists can too.

Do you think Watterson gave up his strip because he couldn't "figure out modern media?"

Also, most web-cartoonists do not make much money. As one of the talking heads in the trailer for STRIPPED says, "newspapers are dollars, the web is pennies."

I never noticed before that the zapped guy has six toes on his left foot. It jumped right out at me just now.

It IS a ripoff of Zap! I wish I still had my copies.

Check out Sheldon. It's written and drawn by one of the guys that did the Stripped film.

This is my version of Crumb's ZAP Comix cover.

Nice drawing, RC. I always like to draw in pen, without any preliminary penciling. The question is whether you use Wite-Out.

Robert Cook म्हणाले...

Thank you, Prof!

I use white acrylic paint to correct mistakes if I'm drawing something to be seen by others. (Or, I did. Now I scan my pencil preliminaries into my Mac and I draw the "inks" digitially.)

I've let my blog lay dormant, but now that I was inspired to post something to it--as a result of your blogpost--I will probably continue, and will put up more selected drawings.

I'm pleased to have inspired you, so thank you.
