The World's Foremost Authority!

Commenting in the thread to "Ta-Nehisi Coates reacts to the reaction to his calling Melissa Harris-Perry 'America's foremost public intellectual," EDH says:
For over 50 years, has there been any debate in America whatsoever?

"The World's Foremost Authority..."

Professor Irwin Corey.

He's still alive and he will be 100 this year! God bless him.

I love this guy. He looked old back in 1966 when The Smothers Brothers introduced him as "The World's Foremost Authority," and he is still alive. His 100th birthday is this year, July 29th.

For an October 2011 interview,[2] Corey invited a New York Times reporter to visit his 1840 carriage house on East 36th Street. Corey estimated its resale value at $3.5 million. He said that, when not performing, he panhandled for change from motorists exiting the Queens-Midtown Tunnel. Every few months, he told the interviewer, he donated the money to a group that purchased medical supplies for Cuban children.

What a mensch!

Believe it or not, when I was around 5, I thought Professor Irwin Corey and William F. Buckley were basically the same guy.

Speaking of the 2000 Year-Old Man, from the "Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee" series Althouse linked to, check out the one with Carl Reiner and Mel Brooks.

An endearing look into their real lives, two widowers who routinely get together in Reiner's den eating dinner off TV trays watching TV.

Reminds me of so much of the old SNL stuff! It doesn't stand the test of time.

Me, I go with Dr. Bunsen Honeydew. Much broader audience.

Did Peter Falk got some of his mannerisms for Colombo from him?

He's a lot like actor Sam Elliott. Always looked old.

Then there was Professor Backwards, whose act consisted of, what else, backwards talk.

Sadly, he died young.

After falling into the Mississippi no one could understand his cries of "Pleh! Pleh!"

He's no Al Kelly.
