Wouldn't fur-lined boots be more comfortable?

Doesn't he come equipped with a brandy keg?

Sunglasses and a red nose.

That coat is 4 sizes too large but I only wear it once a year. I can seem to get rid of it or replace it.

Althouse in chador. Never thought I'd see it.

Or as I call it...white hell. Snow is f%$#$@ing hateful.

Good time to travel to a warmer climate, I will be soon.

Get yourself a Canada Goose parka. They make great women's parkas Then you can sit outside at -20, drink wine and be perfectly comfortable.

A precious memory of our St Bernard. In eighth grade we lived in western NY (Darien Center). It snowed and drifted and I was able to step over the 6' tall turkey fence enclosure for Benny (our Bernard). I looked in his house and there was no dog. So while standing atop the snow drift I was looking out over our acreage looking for my dog. While so occupied the snow bank shook and Benny popped out the side. Whoa! SO too cool for a boy who had read "Call of the Wild" and "White Fang". Benny had curled up in the cold and the drift covered him. Such precious moments.

What?? No pictures making snow angels??

Tough dog. My beagle-pointer, who has been insensible to cold until now here in Chicago, has never acted so motivated to get it done and get back inside.

Wind chill map in Indianapolis is Minus 40, and in Ft Lauderdale it is Plus 78. That's 118 degrees difference over a thousand miles. Hello Ice Age.

Ice cream factory has 36 jobs,1600 people apply.

I have heard it said that we need Mexicans to do the jobs Americans won't do.

Once they become American citizens, will they refuse those jobs?

Abby is definitely in her element.

Well, if I were born with a coat like that I'd similarly romp in the snow. Since I'm a puny human, I finish outdoor things quickly and go back to the heat.

Just took my pitbull out in the subzero freeze. He was not happy at all and I think he blames me. A layered winter coat makes all the difference.

Note to animal lovers: if you have one of those fabric cat houses, this would be a good night to leave it on your porch with a few treats inside. The semi-feral felines in your hood would thank you if they could.

While I'm generally a Bama fan, I'm rooting for Auburn.

The stars look tempting tonight, but it's too cold to sit outside with the telescope.

Those who know, what are good gloves for very cold weather?

NotWhoIUsedtoBe म्हणाले...

Why is the dog's back end red?

Ignorance is Bliss म्हणाले...

If you don't absolutely need fingers, go for mittens over gloves.

I don't have a preferred brand, but I like a wind/waterproof mitten outer shell over a thin glove-style liner.

I came up Boston/Providence, generally the Northeast and around DC (that was surprising).

Mittens. With hand warmers. Available through the Althouse Amazon portal of course. :-)

Freeman, there is a third way. It all depends on how opposable and articulate you need to be, whatever you're doing in the cold.

I first saw those marketed to SCUBA divers.

Two fascinating articles about Obama's leisure reading and TV watching habits.

The article tells us that he "picked up" two dozen books at a store. So...clearly he was browsing! One presumes most or all of the books were chosen for him. Ultimately, the article really does not tell us anything about what Obama reads, except presuming that he actually will read the books he's buying.

"As he prepares to pull most American troops out of Afghanistan next year, Mr. Obama picked up Khaled Hosseini’s “The Kite Runner” and James Salter’s evocative “All That Is,” a story of a World War II naval officer turned book editor searching for love."

What does troop withdrawals from Afghanistan have to do with a WWII love story? Junk journalism. Evocative.

Should they have a nose mask?

Yes, dogs can get nose frost-bite.
