A stop in Oklahoma, late Sunday afternoon.
Note the thick coating of ice on the tree. We made it that evening to Andover, Kansas, just beyond Wichita, and driving yesterday, we stopped somewhere in Iowa...
... before reaching Madison just before 10 p.m. (in time to stop into Whole Foods before it closed so we'd have fresh bacon and eggs for a classic breakfast Tuesday morning at Meadhouse).

@Professor,
Do you like Chez Mac, as in a guilty pleasure kind of way? Or was it what was open at the time?
I really don't like McDonalds, but do find Popeyes a guilty pleasure, and am fanatically devoted to Waffle House, with no guilt attached.
We stop at McDonald's because of: 1. bathrooms, 2. WiFi, 3. Coffee, 4. Acceptable food.
In that order.

Oh, now you're just taunting those members of your readership who think you live in a liberal bubble and just don't understand how things are in The Real World.
Many years ago, I drove across country in March on Interstate 80. I was astounded by the number of big rigs that went off the road in the ice and snow.
Have you seen the price of arugula at Whole Foods?

That sounds perfectly sane & reasonable.
But I promise you, in this time of Christmas charity to all, that I would not have thought less of you if you had said "Goddammit, sometimes I'm just dyin' for a quarter pounder with cheese & fries!"
I like Whole Foods because of: 1. The meat, 2. It's small enough to breeze through and get your stuff quickly (no endless aisles that make a zombie out of you), 3. Produce, 4. Black Cat Intelligentsia Coffee, 5. Helpful, friendly staff.

I had a McRib for the first time, and it was bad. Way too much gloppy, sweet sauce and the meat was kind of weird. I really wished I'd gotten a Quarter Pounder With Cheese. At another McD stop, I got a Quarter Pounder With Cheese, and even though I asked for it "plain" and underscored my preference by also saying "no toppings," it came with the full panoply of disgusting topics. Blech. Pickles. Mustard and ketchup. I hate that. And why isn't the cheese melted onto the burger? How is it a cheeseburger to just lay a piece of plastic cheese on top of the burger. It's so dumb. But it's okay.
" the full panoply of disgusting topics"
LOL.
Toppings.
Lol. Althouse sums up why I've been in McD's once in the last 20 years. I was there about a year ago because it was across the street from the court where I was trying a case. The burger I had was devoid of taste. My client had a burger and a chicken sandwich; he said they both tasted the same.
Eggs keep for months and months.
I buy lots when they're on sale.
They're just not "fresh eggs" when called for in recipes.
Old ones are much easier to shell when hardboiled.
Professor, I'm pretty sure my sisters and I stopped at that same McDonald's on our way to visit relatives in Des Moines.
I occasionally eat at McDonald's now (love their sweet tea), but back in high school there was nothing better than a hot Big Mac for lunch after working hard all morning at the car wash job I had.
Same place I was last weekend. And Andover was much easier to drive thru Sat when snow and ice covered the roads as opposed to Sun when the sun melted off most of the snow and ice but bad drivers covered the roads
I worked at McDonalds while in high school.
Now, I dis-assemble each burger so I can show my companions how inept the current crews are. Lots of eye rolling from friends and family, but hey, if it's worth doing, it's worth doing right!
And don't get me started on the modern fries.
Oh gee, you drove right through Oklahoma City. That's where I am! Next time, let me know and I'll treat y'all to some good onion burgers, or BBQ, or whatever suits your taste.
LOL..

Lara Logan was sent home for putting on an interview with a liar (on CBS 60 mins) but what about Leslie Stahl -- she featured Susan Rice in the latest interview? {a post asks on NoQuarter blog}
Having completely given up hope for a White Christmas - it was over 60 degrees on Sunday - you can't imagine how happy I was when it started snowing a few hours ago. While the snow was very heavy at times it didn't last for long, but we got maybe an inch and a half to two inches, and as it's going to stay well below freezing it'll still be on the ground tomorrow morning.
Two inches isn't enough for a classic White Christmas, but it sure beats bare ground.

Ya' know, I'll bet Diane Sawyer, or George Stephanopolis couldn't find free, safe, clean housing anywhere they please to stop.
Meadehouse can!!
The Egg McMuffin must be one of the most delicious quick breakfast items ever conceived. It is perfect.
