Susan Rice and the single-earner household.

From the "60 Minutes" piece on Susan Rice, who is "not the first woman to be national security advisor, or the first African American. But she is the first mother. She has two kids: Jake, 16 and Maris, 11."
Her husband, Ian Cameron, used to be an executive producer at ABC News....

Lesley Stahl: Ian, you actually have stopped working.

Ian Cameron: Yeah.

Lesley Stahl: To take care of the kids?

Ian Cameron: Yeah. Well we were in a situation, you know, financially that one of us could step out of the working world.

You couldn't pay me to watch a 60 Minutes segment, so I'll just guess that no mention was made of the number of administration officials with close relatives in positions of power in major media outlets. Just a guess.

It makes sense. There's no way that you can have 2 high-powered spouses and provide adequate support to a preteen and a teen.

Plus, Cameron is probably working on his memoirs or writing a book or something on the side. Stay-at-home spouses of both sexes usually have other projects going on... they're just not things that immediately translate into earnings for the family. They're either aspirations, hobbies, or social capital builders.....

The Sims was actually a good model of this. To get ahead in the game, you really needed one member of the household to spend time with kids and neighbors while the other built a career.

Single earner household? SHe's worth tens of millions...how the fuck did that happen is the question.

Would have love to see a montage of all the lying Susan Rice did when she went on a variety of shows to blame an obscure youtube video for inciting riots in Libya that "caused" the deaths of our Ambassador and staff. But then again I would have to sit there and watch 60 minutes kiss her ass the whole time. Nope.

Rice's children are legally classified as African American and as such are eligible for all sorts of affirmative action privileges. Yet they are entirely Caucasian in physical appearance. Her daughter even has blonde hair.

I didn't see the piece. The chances of them doing a hard hitting piece on her are roughly the same as them doing a puff piece on Sarah Palin.

ironrailsironweights said "Rice's children are legally classified as African American..."

This makes me wonder: what if an African American adopts a white child, or if a white adopts a black child?

In Jewish tradition, the child automatically gets the cultural lineage of the mother.

Well, it's not her salary as security advisor that's doing it. But in Washington, if you have power and access to power, there are so many great ways to get rich.

Yeah. Well we were in a situation, you know, financially that one of us could step out of the working world... and not have to suffer the confiscatory after-tax trade-off between work and non-work necessary if we had to go to work to earn more money.

Fixed!

Cameron's got big family money. He didn't earn it. They are the 1%. So we must despise them.

why is this a story? when do we get to talk about benghazi and that video that was the root cause?

Rob म्हणाले...

He stopped working outside the home. Leslie Stahl wouldn't have made that mistake if she were addressing that subject with a woman. Why is it okay to denigrate the role of stay-at-home men?

paminwi म्हणाले...

You know the question that was asked of Sarah Palin about being VicePresident? How could you do that job when you have a special needs child, and other kids at home?

So, no Republucan woman could do it, but isn't it SPECIAL that a liberal dad would do that for his wife?

Effing hypocrits!

They are worth more than $23 million. Money came from his family. They never have had to work. Stahl must know this.

Anyone wanna bet there is a full time nanny in this household?

Thank's for the tip on the cash, McCullough. Here's their NYT wedding announcement from 1992:

"Susan Elizabeth Rice, the daughter of Dr. Emmett J. Rice and Lois Dickson Fitt, both of Washington, was married there yesterday to Ian Officer Cameron, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Newton D. Cameron of Victoria, British Columbia. The Rev. Kwase Thornell performed the Episcopal ceremony at the St. Albans School chapel.

Mrs. Cameron, 27 years old, is a management consultant at McKinsey & Company, the international management consulting company, in Toronto. She graduated from Stanford University and received a doctorate in international relations from Oxford University, where she was a Rhodes Scholar. Her father, a retired senior vice president at the National Bank of Washington, is a former governor of the Federal Reserve. Her mother is a guest scholar at the Brookings Institution.

Mr. Cameron, 31, is a television producer in Toronto for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. He also graduated from Stanford, and received a master's in international relations from the London School of Economics and Political Science. His father, who is retired, owned the Victoria Plywood Company, a lumber company in Victoria."

The history of Susan Rice's family is interesting. Her maternal grandparents were immigrants from Jamaica to Portland, Maine. They raised 5 children, all great successes in school and college. Rice's mother was a high school valedictorian in 1950 and went to Radcliffe, where she earned high honors and was class president.

I do not think their kids are going to need African American classification to move ahead. The earlier family members did quite well when being African American was not a benefit.

The Rice family wasn't destitute. Pop Was a PhD Econ Prof at Cornell, Governor of the Federal Reserve, and lots of consulting gigs and market tips.

Mom, was a Brookings Scholar.

Susan went to National Cathedral Day School and Stanford. She grew up on the mean streets of Embassy Row Georgetown...

I guess I didn't see the point. Feminists argue men and women are the same. I assume Rice is a feminist. Lots and lots of NSA's have had stay at home spouses. It's an 18 hour a day job if done right, though in her case...

Nothing to see here. With their wealth, they have a lot more options than say Bill Clark, one of Reagan's NSA's

Like Colin Powell's parents, immigrants from the British Caribbean. Less of a slavery chip on their shoulders, striving immigrants seem to do better than American blacks...

It was great when Leslie Stahl said "C'mon Susan, you were a Rhodes Scholar. You must have known that the video story was a lie that the White House peddled in order to minimize the political fallout from Benghazi."

Oh, wait a minute-she didn't say that. My bad.

Hey, you know who was also from Portland (albeit across the country from Maine)? Ty Woods. His widow also lives in a single-earner household.

She wasn't even the first African American woman named Rice to be national security adviser. I guess this is a slam on Condi (because, you know, she didn't marry or have children and that means she's probably -- not that there's anything wrong with that.)

And btw, ironrailsironweights, other than in the antebellum South, under what legal system are "Rice's children ... legally classified as African American"?

Michael K म्हणाले...

"She's not even the first African American woman named Rice.
"

She's not even on the same planet as the other Rice who made it as much on her own as any American black can do these days. Concert pianist, Russian scholar.

"Rice was born in Birmingham, Alabama, the only child of Angelena (née Ray) Rice, a high school science, music, and oratory teacher, and John Wesley Rice, Jr., a high school guidance counselor and Presbyterian minister"

Very different.

I remember her well when she was a foreign policy advisor to the Kerry campaign. She was one of the most arrogant and obnoxious liberal talking heads I have ever seen. And that is a high bar. She was Zeke Emmanuel level obnoxious. I don't know how anyone can stand her.

Unknown म्हणाले...

she is an arrogant selfish liar who also has a problem with her colour. Her husband is a weak psychologically feminized male and an oil driller-look that up in the urban dictionary.
She is a spoiled brat from embassy row, who is nothing but an incompetent liar who got ahead by affirmative action and so will those swirly ice cream cone (half choc and half vanilla) use affirmative action to get what they want. That disgusting family where the children are half shaved ape and susan is a full shaved ape.
