"... how much more bracing it is to have sweetness laced with tartness. I told them I would be very, very nice until they asked me to stop, certain that they’d get sick of saccharine and syrupy in short order. Except they didn’t. They liked it."
Says Maureen Dowd, about her 10-year-old self.
People may be bored by all niceness all the time, but they still appreciate (and maybe take advantage of) those who opt to perform perfect sweetness. One can always find amusing edge in somebody else, even keeping the very nice person around for company and for snuggles later.

Mighty Mo, adjusting her personna for five decades.
Niceness can be an effective weapon. Kill them with kindness.
I, I, I, I, I, I, I.
Started to read it, but couldn't stick with it.
People who assume others will be interested in how *utterly fascinating* and *ahead of the curve* and *out of the box* they were at ten years old are generally crashing bores.
I find it hard to believe that she was ever nice.
I have a childhood friend who showers me with effusive praise and compliments, calling me "an inspiration" at every turn. He has absolutely nothing bad to say about me and others online and in conversation.
I'm not that great and I rarely see him these days for him to make any judgment.
Give me honesty any day.
People still read Maureen Dowd ?
Bully people with niceness Passive aggressive works. Being your real self just presents an easy target to the slandering brigades of "nice people."
I see she gave up on that tactic.
Not to review books negatively is in essence to subsume book reviewing into advertising, public relations and promotion. Succumbing to uplift, edification and happy talk is basically saying that there’s something more important than telling the truth: not making enemies, not hurting people’s feelings.
Scott Walker might have something to say to Dowd about negative book reviews, especially the obligation to read it first.
MoDo has never met a nice southern woman, apparently.
They are all sweetness as they put the knife between the shoulder blades and twist.
Bless MoDo's withered heart!
Being nice and being polite aren't necessarily the same thing.
Am curious why the Prof. has not focused on ObamaCare lately, given the ultimate story:
White House Delayed ACA for Politics
http://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/white-house-delayed-enacting-rules-ahead-of-2012-election-to-avoid-controversy/2013/12/14/7885a494-561a-11e3-ba82-16ed03681809_story.html
See the story. There is Cass Sunstein (the other of S. Power at the UN). Remember: Benghazi and her invisible role.
If a WH can manipulate ACA for politics, then will the same WH use their authority to demonize anyone asking about: BENGHAZI.
This WH is like a used-by sell date of an onion. It smells bad and bad every day.
BUT, GOP is still a loser. Why?
GOP hates women, science, and minorities.
Can GOP love women's rights, science, and immigration?
That is a BILLION DOLLAR (or 2016) question?
MODO update your PHOTO!!!!!
Has she been a bitch since she was 11, then?
Yeah I did that for a while, only I considered it a form of non-resistance rather than "niceness". I was taking a rest, since I'm basically pretty kind anyway.
Everyone loved it. Even my best friends, because, you know, people like to hear themselves talk while you smile at them like the perfect kindergarten teacher.
The only one who was miserable was me. It was okay for a break, but it was like I no longer existed - and No. One. Cared.
Spooky.
Apparently, dense thickets of snarky prose expounding feminist principles are going out of style.
It may no longer be enough to praise the empty pantsuit.
I suppose that's an improvement.
Someone needs to do a Fellini-eque fashion show with a pantsuit figure, or some kind of Kennedy apparition, instead of the Pope:

Hard to believe after all these years, Dowd still thinks she was being "nice".
She is close to drifting accidentally into American conservatism and away from American progressivism--the belief that the tragic element of Creation is somehow connected to its goodness.
A Southerner, man or woman, will be polite and courteous up until the point at which they are ready to kill you.
Bless Maureen's little heart.
That must be why Canadians are so boring. Seriously, as a group the nicest people I've ever met or worked with.
