Are you going to go all Black Friday today?

Is it an in-person sport for you or will you do it on line? If the latter, please consider entering Amazon through The Althouse Portal.

My shopping officially starts today. For the first time in many years I have a love interest, and she has two daughters, 6 and 11. I am off to Amazon through the Althouse link for legos, kids books, and kids clothes for my two grandchildren and my new additions. Wish me luck!

Unfortunately I have to wade into the Black Friday mire and visit a Home Depot. I sold off one of my vintage table saws and the buyer wants it crated for shipping.

As a funny aside, the Rhinelander, WI (garage's home town) Home Depot has a guy with an Australian accent working in lumber. At least he answered the telephone. Haha!

Are you nuts?
If I go anywhere it'll be into the woods.

I like to be finished with the gift shopping before Halloween, but will grab a few things online.

Working on the new generation of gift getters to get two of the best gifts to get ever. ...and ever.

My wife and 19 and 11 year old daughters are bonding out in the mayhem this morning. My cousin and the 11 year old boys are going to watch Strange Brew, eat some leftovers, then meet the girls at a gun shop and look around.

Good clean fun!

Trey

"In the woods" - hah! I went all the way to Germany - arrived in Berlin an hour ago. No one has so much as mentioned Thanksgiving.

Nope. Kids are grown and gone; most Christmases, we send everyone Amazon gift certificates. This year, however, everyone's[*] getting an external hard drive with tens of thousands of family photos and hundreds of home videos; one of our daughters-in-law has spent months scanning in pre-digital prints, negatives, and video tapes, plus we have our own archive of digital photos and movies, plus photos and slides that my wife scanned in a few years back from her parents' collections.

[*] Grandkids are still getting Amazon gift certificates; we're not that cruel.

Nope. No shopping today.

I used to go skiing on this day, but thanks to Not Really Climate Change, there is never any snow yet.

So I might as well go to work.

I dropped out of Christmas years ago in terms of gift buying - no regrets. I do work today, in a retail environment. After years of observing from the sidelines, I'll be in the thick of it somewhat.

Personally, I focus on holiday cooking.

Rehajm- my daughter gave me the Far Side collection for my 45th birthday. Unfortunately I was in the hospital recovering from a serious infection of an abdominal incision. The books were too heavy to lift as I laid in bed, so I struggled to prop them and lie on my side...but then suffered in pain when I laughed.

Despite the poor timing of the gift, they are fantastic. I find myself wishing for an index though, when I occasionally remember a favorite and struggle to find it.

Entering a Store on Black Friday is Like Being Thrown into a Pit of Ravenous Pigs.

Having had some retail experience, I can say authoritatively that at least one major department store will run the same sales, more or less, off-and-on through Christmas and for all eternity. What few items are on super-special are either trash or will be put on super-special again before Christmas.

I did all my shopping online last year, until on the evening of Dec 23 my son called and said his friend's visa was messed up so he couldn't go to China to visit his family. He asked to bring him home for Christmas, because he had to get to the Chinese embassy to sort out the visa, and because he was in a state of general bummed-ness.

Too late for Amazon, I went shopping for some gifts for him. In a store. For the first time that season. On Christmas Eve. My goal this year is to avoid such things.

Online for me!

It has been our tradition for the 30+ years of family life to not leave the house on Black Friday. With children, we planned for a day of quiet pleasures: Legos, books, a movie, and more good food. With teens, friends came over for football and a movie and...more good food. Now our grown kids are home for a visit and our Black Friday will consist of dog walking, reading companionably, football, raucous word games later, with wine. And more good food. And, Althouse, I'm going through your portal sometime today.

"Are you going to go all Black Friday today?"

Are you ready to get some black Friday 'all up in ya'?

Deb म्हणाले...

I'm going out. I don't celebrate Christmas but I enjoy the crowds since I'm not really shopping. I know it sounds crazy.

That's African-American Friday, raaaaacist!

Mountain Maven म्हणाले...

NEVER! All to be done online if possible much later.

"No one has so much as mentioned Thanksgiving."

Had a co-worker move to England two weeks ago, and in a conference call last week he mentioned he was working right through Thanksgiving (us statesiders have an official company holiday). His manager said he would be provided with a turkey and cranberry sandwich as compensation.

Paco Wové -

When I lived in Saudi Arabia, we ALWAYS got Thanksgiving off!

Of course, so do the Saudis. Thursday and Friday are the weekend there...workweek Saturday through Wednesday.

They stopped giving us Christmas off after a while, just to balance it out, I guess.
