"Our traditions are such that I cannot even step out of the house... Who will earn money to feed me and my son?"

Asks the wife of the rapist-murderer.
In the village where [Punita] Devi lives in eastern Bihar state with her husband's family, women are kept veiled and largely secluded. They can't leave home without a male relative. Ms. Devi must wait until dark simply to go into the field behind her house to defecate.

"A woman going out for work is not in our tradition," says Vinay Singh, Mr. Singh's older brother. Ms. Devi's mother-in-law, Malati Devi, is blunter. "In our family, women die at home. They never venture outside," she says.

Wow, noticing a little flaw in that plan, sparky.Maybe a whole society shoulnd't be based on that plan.

Not to worry, our progs are on it. We have focused world attention on gay marriage, gay divorce, gay rights, LGBT this, LGBT that, transgender children's rights, coed elementary school restrooms and politically correct Pro Football Team names.

Next week we'll work on a continuing charade to allow low info voters and party-in-power acolytes and sycophants to revel in the "progress" make by their team on behalf of world peace, responsible governance and the children. LA schools will issue politically correct arm bands, political points will be made and scored by the Government Propagandists formerly known as journalists. Victory will be declared, no matter what.

Walmart Americans nearly rioted over a temporary "glitch" in the free food dispensation program proving the millennias-old caution "...never more than three meals away from revolution".

China and Russia both openly mock the US leadership without us mounting any defense or counterattack, maybe because no credible defense can be mounted by the current crop of thugs and looters-in-charge.

The poor woman in India is focused on her lack of rights to earn a living or even to defecate at will, in peace. Our focus seems to be defecating on the institutions that provide and protect our hard won freedoms here

Yep, world leadership R us.

Ugh.

What Mike said.

The triviality of American feminism.

How many more countries should we occupy to protect the women? Do we have the funds to continue to be the world's police and social workers? The plight of women in countries like this is horrendous, no doubt about it. Should even one progressive suggest funding such a "rescue mission" for third world women, the outcry on the right would be deafening. " Taxed enough already!"

Someone tell me again about the Republican "War on Women".

How about we begin with a simple acknowledgement that multiculturalism is wrong, some cultures are indeed better than others, and frankly our is pretty damn good.

Yes, but to ask the really important question: does she get free birth control?

OTOH, look at the worldwide protest for apartheid back in the day - whose restrictions were far less than these women suffer, the only difference being they were racially- rather than gender-based. But somehow that counted as real oppression, but this is just "our traditions."

I think a lot of that was tied into white guilt. It's only really opression that matters if its done why the white man. Thus, when it becomes apartheid involving whites mistreating blacks then it harkens back to our own civil rights movement, where liberals feel that they stood against opression.
If it's not that stark though, where it doesn't harken back to their own guilt, then they don't really care about it.

Maybe some religions shouldn't exist.

Yes, she can step out of her house. She may be dishonored but that's tough. And she will earn the money, one way or the other. No time like the present for her to take the initiative. Maybe she can find someone to teach her to read, too.

Sweety, I'm waiting for the first one to suggest it. All I see is Sandra Fluke, Valerie Plame, and the Hilda-beast.

David म्हणाले...

Ok Inga, maybe not a war, but might American feminists find a less bellicose way to show some interest in the issue? Go to India and burn a few bras or something?

mike म्हणाले...

Inga - I did not and would not call for the U.S. to do anything but help bring attention to the plight of people trapped in oppressive religions/regimes. My points were to show the inanity of American culture vs the survival instincts still at work in this town in India. To invade, go to war over or attempt to "buy" a fix for these problems in India is a fool's errand. You are welcome
to militate toward that end.

A 5000-year old culture and they haven't even advanced to chamber pots yet? Pooping in the back yard in the dark (watch your step!)? Seriously?

Clyde म्हणाले...

If anybody is feeling really entrepreneurial, bringing chamber pots to the people of Bihar is probably a growth industry.

All cultures are equal. Aren't they?
