Crooked numbers and frozen rope.

Terms from the glossary of baseball. I found this (huge) list fun to quiz Meade on during a long car trip the other day.

Did I say "long car trip" before? I guess I corrected it... before I moderated this comment in.

I've read through this list before. I run a trivia night at a local bar and this was good for a round of questions. My favorite term is the Golden Sombrero - four strikeouts in the same game. Before I read the list I never heard it mentioned. Now it seems to be mentioned by the announcers every few games or so.

I found this list after hearing announcers talk about "crooked numbers" and how they didn't know why the term was used (like they can't Google!).

"Platinum Sombrero".

Roberto Clemente, my favorite player, once struck out 5 times in an All Star game.

That list is a lot of fun.

I always liked the term "ducks on the pond." When I started coaching my son's Little League team, I used the term and everyone thought I was from Mars.

I always liked "Texas Leaguer", since I once worked for a Texas League team. "Wearing the collar" is another favorite.

Long car trip?

Have you ventured from the enclave?

Crash Davis: Know what the difference between hitting .250 and .300 is? It's 25 hits. 25 hits in 500 at bats is 50 points, okay? There's 6 months in a season, that's about 25 weeks. That means if you get just one extra flare a week - just one - a gorp... you get a groundball, you get a groundball with eyes... you get a dying quail, just one more dying quail a week... and you're in Yankee Stadium.

If you are old enough to have listened to a lot of baseball on radio, you will know most of these. I was educated by Rosey Rosewell and Bob Prince of the Pirates. That was like having degrees from Harvard and Cambridge, the finest education around.
