"Muslim Brotherhood claims interim Egyptian president is Jewish."

"According to the [Washington] Post, the article falsely stated that [Adli] Mansour is 'considered to be a Seventh Day Adventist, which is a Jewish sect.'"

Related — to some unknown degree — from David Brooks: "It’s not that Egypt doesn’t have a recipe for a democratic transition. It seems to lack even the basic mental ingredients."

I just fell into this in the midst of looking for Monty Python's The Holy Grail. Not sure which seems more surreal...

The Brothers are scrambling to get some popular support.

And, since the Adventists are Protestant and he isn't even one of them, they're unlikely to get it.

What's nice about all this is that they're the last remnants of Hitler's allies in the Middle East.

well you can make the argument that all Christian creeds are at base a sect of Judaism.

All it takes is one drop of blood, right?

Gahrie, isn't Islam an offshoot of Judaism too? Don't they share the same God and several prophets?

How did our government decide to support these assholes when there is apparently a strong secular movement in Egypt? Does anyone know, it's an honest question, not an argument. Are the MB and the Obama administration united in their leftist brand of antisemitism dressed up as antizionism?

The difference is, Jesus was a Jew, and never rejected Judaism. Mohammad was not a Jew, and explicitly rejected Judaism. (Admittedly Jews and Christians are accorded slightly bteer treatment than other non-Muslims as People of the Book)

Well, the MB won what appeared to have been a reasonably well run election. The US supports democratically elected governments, ergo our support.

The secular guys are estimated at 10% of the population and cannot win an election on their own.

Pastafarian म्हणाले...

Wow, just ten percent and they deposed brutal islamofascists who were apparently supported by a majority of the population. That seems impressive/unlikely.

That gives me hope that we might be able to prevent a third Obama term.

I wonder if my lack of writing skill will cloak that last comment from the NSA.

You are, of course joking.

But I thought the MB was largely "secular" and inclusive, non-discriminatory, and welcoming of all religions . . .

The country is very religious, there are not a lot secular people as a percentage. The military never ceded power despite the fall of Mubarak. They maintain a kleptocracy that controls many of the levers of power despite the elections. Whatever government gains some power in new elections they will remain subject to the military and will have to gradually wrest control from them as happened in Turkey. None of the political entities seem even remotely capable of doing this. It's a clusterfuck, but it is neither the fault or the responsibility of the US.

And remember that Obama is backing these people...

Pastafarian म्हणाले...

I see from edutcher's link that this "popularly elected" MB had three of the five candidates (including the two most popular) removed from the ballot.

Jesus, was David Axelrod actually running the MB campaign? That's the sort of thing that won state and federal senate seats for Obama.

At a certain point do we get to stop pretending that this culture--Arab culture, to be blunt--is ever going to be ready to self govern according to Enlightenment standards?

Slackers. I have it on good authority that here in America "the one percent" are able to win around half the elections.

When you elect fanatics... you have not advanced democracy. You have empowered people who are going to wind up subverting democracy.

Wow, how sensitive and nuanced... And here's another breathless scoop hot off the press -- the Pope is Catholic!

To get and keep his job as Token Conservative on the NYT editorial staff Brooks had to meet several criteria. Among these were:

1) Total emasculation. No opinion, especially of the rightish persuasion, may contain nary a whiff of testosterone, lest Obama be discomforted or Dowd gets a case of the vapors.

2) Though professing conservatism Brooks actual voting record must as ideologically inconsistent as to be indistinguishable from random selection. (Known in Pinch's office as the "Althouse principle".)

3) Be as naive as the last turnip in the vegetable cart so as to exist in a ceaseless state surprise, thus to the inevitable corruption, malfeasance and petty tyranny which must become manifest in a Democratic administration (these iniquities constituting its very soul) Brook can honestly say, "I didn't see that coming, I was busy admiring the Presidents trouser crease."

The "they" doing the deposing wasn't the secular moderates. It was the military, which have always been the real power in modern Egypt.

Brooks: It seems to lack even the basic mental ingredients.

Oh?

So, the Egyptians elected a guy as President who ran on a platform of inclusion and fairness and who promptly on taking office used the government to shut out everyone except the radicals he agreed with and to torpedo the economy.

Sound familiar, Mr Brooks?

So, the Egyptians put up with this mutt (Morsi) for 1 year and then tossed his sorry ass into the dustbin of history.

Unlike America. Where precisely the same slime is still sitting in the White House, perpetuating a mirror image of the same behaviors and we are ... just bending over and taking it, over and over again.

And Brooks wants to bash the Egyptian culture?

F*ck You, David Brooks. And the pants crease you worship right along with you.
