Madison Mayor Soglin's terrible idea — previously discussed on this blog — went down to defeat in the City Council last night.

Here's our previous discussion. (I said: "What is the point of this? To facilitate political discrimination?") Here's news from last night:
Despite an impassioned plea from Mayor Paul Soglin, the Madison City Council on Tuesday rejected [11-9]a measure that would have required those receiving city contracts worth more than $25,000 to disclose contributions to certain advocacy groups....

Soglin said there is no constitutional right to donate money in order to affect elections and remain anonymous. He said the measure was a “very, very small crumb in a layer cake of political, financial shenanigans” that have been going on for centuries.

“It doesn’t mean we can’t take one small step,” he said.
That makes it sound like his proposal was a crumb in a shenanigans cake.

In other Madison news, the council approved that street painting nonsense that we were talking about here.

If I had to choose which one to win and which one to lose, that's how I'd rather it go.

Was there any talk of giving the money not used for policing on Mifflin to a fund to send kids to camp?

Didn't think so.

Republicans in the legislature plan to balance the state budget.....by doing away with the law that it must be balanced. Done!

From the article it seems some voted against it because they don't think it went far enough. With such a close vote, it may not be over yet.

Well, thank God they only enacted the stupid proposal, instead of the stupid and evil proposal.

Soglin's idea makes no objective sense. As I believe I said in the earlier post; these are the guys hired to do the work. Who you want to watch are those doing the hiring. That this went down by only 11-9 is no cause for celebration.

The street thing, like the $100K and donated public land for the garden if Seattle, is just a waste of money. Only places that can collect $15K a year in property taxes on moderately well off Midwestern housing can afford such self-congratulatory nonsense.

If either of these were such an obviously good idea, people would buy their own paint and plant their own trees without need of government assistance. Government permission perhaps, but financial assistance from other people's money, no.

And this is part of what your city-portion of the property taxes in Madison are paying for.

What is that. And it doesn't say what you claim.

Just think how those of us who have literally paid MILLIONS in commercial property taxes feel ...

garage (chicken little??), if you start the budget process with a surplus (as is now the case) you can spend more than you take in during a biennium and maintain a balanced budget.

I don't think anyone should put much stock in what Bitchtits writes.

Not only has he proven himself an idiot who links to things unrelated to his nonsensical statements, but now he is officially diseased.

Begone, foul thing. Take your obesity elsewhere before you infect others.

From what I hear, you could reprint that sentence - substituting something else for "street painting" - every time the Madison City Council meets.
