"That’s what attendees at last weekend’s National Rifle Association convention in Houston might have asked if they weren’t paying close attention to the speeches."
Sarah Palin's prop comedy explained in The Christian Science Monitor, which seems to assume its readership is almost too dumb to be reading a newspaper in the first place.

From the article:
“Making them [the Newtown victims] backdrops ... we have leaders who practice the politics of emotion,” Palin said.
Wasn’t the tobacco tin kind of a backdrop, though? Palin herself is pretty good at riling up a conservative crowd with applause lines, which is also the politics of emotion.
Never trust a newspaper that can not distinguished between a child and a tin of tobacco.
They used to say that newspapers were written at the fifth grade reading level.
Maybe now they're written for fifth graders.
Well, they're dumb enough to be reading the Christian Science Monitor.
Palin is still proudly doing her Scots Irish culture which demands for fairness and openness from leaders. She is still clinging to it.
So she is a ridiculous anathema to all that hide behind appeals to authority rather than to reason. That is appeals to the authority of inane pretended intellectuals and "sociologists" like Bloomberg and Obama chose to govern us with as if it is an art form.
A moose in a tobacco field is worse than a bull in a china shop.
Maybe she's telling Dan Savage to go take a flying fuck at himself (which I don't doubt he'd love to try).
Because she's about to put a big plug in her mouth?
Not many comments here on this Palin post. Is she losing her mojo?
David @8:58: No kidding, that was the first thing I noticed in the article, which I read only because Althouse said "which seems to assume its readership is almost too dumb to be reading a newspaper in the first place". And her comment was dead on too. Although maybe it was just the idiot "staff writer" Peter Grier, and his idiot editor.
“This legislation will help prevent another generation from the ill health and shorter life expectancy that comes with smoking,” Bloomberg said in March.
"ill health" is bad, a drain on Obamacare; "shorter life" is good, a save on Medicare and Social Security payouts. Solution: let those who've passed their most productive years, and those who lazed around smoke.
She's smarter than the reporter and editors of the CSM.
The Monitor at one time was a pretty good paper, as I recall, although boring. Now, not only do they feel they have to explain Sarah Palin's jokes, not only do they equate children with chaw, not only do they not understand the difference between a backdrop and a prop, the closest they can come to describing the execrable Bloomberg is to say that "his enthusiasms can seem nanny-like." "Seem"? "SEEM"? "S E E M" !!!?
I had to watch the video to see what a tin of chewing tobacco was. I watched the video and realized that Ann was referring to a can of copenhagen.
Of course Obama never gives speeches that rile up his supports by playing on their emotions. No no, he only gives out dry policy statements.
Nothin' wrong with a can of chaw now and then. *SPIT*
One day my grandpappy show me some of that fine chewin' tobacky and I tried some. Makes my mouth water just thinking about it today!
Mouth cancer - for pansies only.

The professor was quoting the CSM, they were the ones doing the referring.
If you can't think of more than one way to say tin of chewing tobacco you don't have much imagination.

Big, tough Dan Savage got a butt blister, huh?
NRA in Houston means a lot of cowboy culture, which can only mean one kind of chewing tobacco:
Copenhagen
That's a can of sweet, sweet regular cut Copenhagen. Sweet Cope which I haven't had in 1yr 3 months and 7 days. I really don't miss it...Regular cut has the silver metal top. Long cut which I used has a gold metal top. She seems to know how to pack it. It figures that she is a Copenhagen fan. It's the gold standard of snuff. Oh How I miss it. Must resist.
