"Mother of the Chinese baby flushed down the toilet says she was abandoned by the boy's father..."

"... after their one night stand and could not afford an abortion."

This case is getting a lot of attention because of the vivid details seen in photographs, but realize that it's the seen part of something much larger and mostly unseen:
There are frequent reports in Chinese media of babies being abandoned often shortly after birth, a problem attributed variously to young mothers unaware they were pregnant, the birth of an unwanted girl in a society which puts greater value on boys or China’s strict family planning rules.

The Chicoms really know how to keep the women in line. No wonder Paul Krugman loves them so much.

It is easy to riff on China for their practices toward baby girls. But if I was playing Chinese Jeopardy I might select American Hypocrisy for 10 and get "Who is Dr. Gosnell"?

Not even that, but all those American feminists that applaud abortion videos are pretty much on record, though they hate men, will abort a girl rather than a boy.

Mother's prattle, mother's kiss,
Baby fond, thou ne'er wilt miss.
Rites, which custom does impose,
Silver bells and baby clothes;
Coral redder than those lips,
Which pale death did late eclipse;
Music framed for infants' glee,
Whistle never tuned for thee;
Though thou want'st not, thou shalt have them,
Loving hearts were they which gave them.
Let not one be missing; nurse,
See them laid upon the hearse
Of infant slain by doom perverse.

"The greatest destroyer of peace is abortion because if a mother can kill her own child, what is left for me to kill you and you to kill me? There is nothing between."
Mother Teresa
Nobel Lecture, 11 December, 1979

As this case so amply demonstrates, there is nothing between.

I guess I'm kind of naive.

China charges for abortion? Doesn't she just have to let it slip to the police that she's pregnant and they'll take her away, shakle her, and do the deed? Or do they send an invoice afterwards (in the same way as the Nazis charged the family for the bullet used to kill a victim)?

Maybe Friedman over at The Times can write a column about a shiny new high speed train in Beijing, letting us know that if only we were thus enlightened we could also live in a workers paradise.

Pre-1994 American toilets set the world standard for flushing babies. We call this the "American Standard."

The Chinese ain't got nothing on us. Pikers.

Seeing Red म्हणाले...

It's a shame Chinese females don't have access to health care or abortion doctors.

Saying that feminists hate men means you are a misogynist.

Silly woman. She could have told the village busy bodies that it's her second child. They would abort her baby in record time.

An abortionist killing botched abortion survivors. If he had let them expire slowly in trash cans, as prescribed by a former Illinois senator, then he would be the WH's poster boy fighting for women's reproductive "freedom".

By the way, it's American Hypocrisy for a thousand.

The expectation that our laws and our rulers protect us and will send a rescue operation when we are in peril is a Reform Christian concept that still linger among Americans since they came to the New world and made a christian nation here.

But that facade has been under attack as never before seeking to draw us back into rules and customs of the Roman Empire as is seen in European ways.

Why we surrender to that is a great mystery. Obama knows we will surrender if he smiles and lies about it.

The Rand Pauls and the Scott Walkers are still willing to lead us back to our traditions. But they are despised by the better educated Eurocentric RINOS.

How could she not "afford" an abortion in a technically still communist very pro-abortion country?

Smells fishy.

अनामित म्हणाले...

I don't agree with Mother Theresa's take on it. It's coming from an adult perspective.

My mom told me the facts of life at 8-yrs-old, including abortion and it didn't bother me a bit. It seemed reasonable. I didn't think "Gosh, you could have killed me!!! What is to stop us from killing each other now if you even could have killed your own daughter?" or anything because there were no memories of that and all and the rest was probabilities - like when you lay awake at night as a little kid thinking "if my parents had never met, I would NOT exist. Woooo." And in case it needs to be said, 8 is only 8 years away from being a fetus.

Hello regular lurker adding to the comments-
I was a bit surprised when this story gained such media attention given this is China we are discussing here. I realized the video documenting was driving the swell of interest as opposed to the common rarely documented forced abortions or now standard child doing that occurs in China.

I wonder if human rights organizations would think of going full "Breitbartian" in passing out video cameras to
Citizens in various countries of atrocities by law. I

"She could not afford an abortion"? In a country where they're given out forcibly? That's called "not trying hard enough."

All she had to do was go to the village council and say, "I'm pregnant with my second child," and boom, faster than you could say "Margaret Sanger," they'd have had her tied down to the abortion table.

JAL म्हणाले...

Wasn't / Isn't this a baby boy?

Do they do adoptions in China? What about the childless couples who want their One?

I'm female.

Oh please. Who thinks that way? No, she explained sex, periods, sperm/ovum, pregnancy, birth control, miscarriages, and abortions, which at the time were done in the first trimester.

It really wasn't that hard to grasp nor was it remotely upsetting in context. Didn't you ever wonder if you would exist if your parents hadn't met? Did that upset you?

I also took it all in from the perspective of something I could look forward to in a few short years, kind of a user's manual, rather than something that was strictly about mom and/or abortion.

Maybe that's a guy fear that women don't have? Or maybe some people sense that their mom didn't love them or resented them in some way at a young age, so it's a subconscious fear of theirs and they take the concept very personally as a personal threat. I don't know. Wasn't even a consideration with my mom.

Curiously, my Catholic dad was nominally pro-life (which my sisters and I saw as vaguely ridiculous) and hit my pregnant mother in the stomach during her first pregnancy as well as abused his first born son because as a young man he couldn't stand his crying. My mom was loving. So there you go.

You're dad was just nothing more than a wife beating dick. You're mother was a punching bag. His pro-life stance is a non-sequitor under those conditions. Kind of like you.
