Let me see your workspace.

Lots of links to photos, collected in a Metafilter post, but the links all go to LinkedIn, and there's some serious hostility to LinkedIn for spamming us all these years. And it's not just that....
I'd be happy if they'd just get rid of the "influencers". It seems as if they had deliberately set out to make a list of the most annoying, unselfconscious people on Earth. I mean, which other list manages to contain the globular egos of David Cameron, Deepak Chopra, Richard Branson, Arianna Huffington and Martin Varsavsky, a.o.?
If you want to see the workspaces of some admirable people, I love this book, "Writer's Desk," with excellent photographs by Jill Krementz (who was married to Kurt Vonnegut) and an introductory essay by John Updike.

And here's what my desk looks like right now:

Untitled
(Partial view, with snow.)

ADDED: What's with "a.o." in the blockquote above? Is this another call for me to check Urban Dictionary?

A.O.    7 up, 3 down
Stands for Accidental Ownage. When someone shows off and fails, or something like that.

Dude, this guy was trying to do a handstand on a rail and he flipped over.
Whoa, that's total A.O.

That looks like some evil s$%@ you're building at that desk!

LOL. But that's not a snow globe. It's a paperweight. Despite the presence of the word "globular" in the post.

I know, but you should have been talking about more than just the robot.

Nice picture of the falling snow. Replace all that melted yesterday.

Should I leave?

Why the need for HDMI cables?

Yes, ma'am. Duly noted.

Why do people need paperweights? I have paper piles, and they almost never blow away.

George Grady म्हणाले...

I suspect "a.o." stands for "and others", so it's an Latinophobe's version of "et al."

Unknown म्हणाले...

a.o. is the pretentious way of signaling that you think "et al." is pretentious.

Wince म्हणाले...

From the context, "a.o." might mean "and others", as in et al.?

Pictures of my workspace would reveal its location and desirability, which might lead to having to exercise my Second Amendment rights.

But the Urban Dictionary meaning is more amusing.

You could make an UD entry and see if it gets up or down votes.

"I suspect "a.o." stands for "and others", so it's an Latinophobe's version of "et al.""

I find it hard to imagine somebody who'd come up with a.o. would be averse to et al. Why not just etc.?

Et cetera (and so on) is for things and et al (and other people) is for well, people!

My favorite lipstuff.

Also, reminds me of my favorite Turkish phrase: Such a pile of cables around one's electronics is referred to as teknoloji çöplüğü, translating to something like pile of technology trash.

Dr Weevil म्हणाले...

If paper cuts come from paper that's too sharp-edged, do paper piles come from toilet paper that's too rough?

Unknown म्हणाले...

Ann,

I find it hard to imagine somebody who'd come up with a.o. would be averse to et al. Why not just etc.?

Well, "et cetera" means, as I understand it, "and other things," which is kind of rude if you're appending it to a list of people. And if you object to Latin, it's not an improvement.

As my desk is Finance Central, there's my stuff (pills, coupons, tech accessories, Life Savers, the odd bottle of paint and brush), plus all The Blonde's fiscal flotsam and jetsam.

As for my desktop, it's a mess covered with everything from CDs I reviewed recently to hairbands to old envelopes with shopping lists written on them to photos of my husband to paper towels and spare pens to stuff I like to read, and other stuff I have to read pronto.

(I applied to Harvard Law's free online copyright law course, casually, and then actually got in to it, and have gone from "Woo-hoo!" to "Oh dear God, whatever have I gotten myself into?" in the space of days. Actually, the lecture and the readings are very interesting; it's making sure the damn webcam setup works that's freaking me out at the moment.)

I envy how clean your desk is. Mine gets crapped up with layers of mail, art supplies, notes, etc...

And I can't get anything done in a messy space, so all work sessions have to start with a cleaning session.

That should be Uihlein, not Uhlein.

Sydney म्हणाले...

My desk is a mess with stacks of pending papers and things I put aside instead of throwing out thinkin I might need them soon. I often have to push things aside to make working space, like Ma Kettle getting her kitchen table ready for dinner. Funny thing is, I have patient getting ready in the next exam room who was an elementary school teacher with an aversion to messy desks. She used to say to the kid with the messy desk, "Here, let me help you with that," then turn their desk over spilling all of its contents on the floor. Which the student then had to pick up and thus clean the desk. I always wonder what she thinks when she walks past my office and its messy desk. So far, almost ten years and she hasn't said a peep about it.

I was that kid. I hated it when teachers did that.

Freeman Hunt म्हणाले...

Then I became an adult, and it turned out that no one cared what my desk looked like. Additionally, it turned out that my bosses had messy desks, so go figure.

I Have Misplaced My Pants म्हणाले...

Sydney--that is so utterly disrespectful and humiliating. The stuff we ask kids to put up with from teachers peers sometimes--we would never tolerate it as adults, coming from other adults. I'm trying, and failing, to imagine any boss I've ever had dumping my belongings on the floor.

wildswan म्हणाले...

I live with neatness freaks who "clean up" everything they can find. So I have to keep everything I'm working on in a tight little circle around me and hide it when I move away out of its sight. But on the other hand the room I work in has big windows and all kinds of plants passing through - they get cleaned up, too - like orchids,a banana plant, a baby lime, a jade tree and so on. I used to have a desk buried in My Stuff with a shamrock looking on but now I'm a sort of squirrel hastily burying important stuff in select drawers and hoping I don't forget what is where.

Basta! म्हणाले...

"et al." can be used for lists of either people or things, since the abbreviated al. can be understood as standing for either alii (other people) or alia (other things).

For a mixed list, though, uh. . . duh. . . I dunno. Maybe it's safer then to stick with etc.?

The people who use "b" instead of typing "be" would seem to be prime candidates for coming up with "a.o." instead of "et al" and "etc."

I love workspace/deskscape posts!

If anyone is interested, I'll share some pictures of my workspaces. I've posted all of these here before at various times, my apologies if some of you have already seen them. Here's my most recent desk-scape photograph, taken on 20 January. This is a wider shot of my desk area from a few years ago. Here's a corner of my art studio (from 2008). This is a photograph of my perfumery lab (from 2008), and here are three views of my kitchen.

Notice that the glass on the left is half-full; you just cropped out the full part on the left with the Robot Sugar Vodka (to go with the e-Cig). I see these things.

No. If you saw my workspace right now, you'd scream.

Yeah, just a bit messy...
