"When you get divorced, all the truths that come out, you sit there and you go, 'What the f*** was I doing?'"

"'What was I doing believing that this person was invested in this way?' Which is a fantastically strong humiliation in the best sense..."

Says Sean Penn, who doesn't "feel that I have ever been loved."

I don't care about Sean Penn. He loves Chavez. That's all you need to know about him.

Actors and actresses in general are flawed individuals, and yet their opinions are given reverence - it is not a good thing for our society, the Entertainment Tonight-ization of the electorate, the dumbing down, and the shallowness that comes with it.

Even Barabara Walters, who could once have been considered as a serious person, has been reduced to the shallow bitch role.

edutcher म्हणाले...

Well, that last statement probably has a lot of truth to it.

Renee म्हणाले...

Painful, but true if love wasn't in the marriage to begin with.

Penn's work in Haiti is amazing though, he walks the walk.

Larry J म्हणाले...

I don't know if Sean Penn has ever been loved, but I know for a fact that he has been hated. Quite a bit.

rhhardin म्हणाले...

If it weren't for misunderstanding, we would never agree on anything.

Vince म्हणाले...

He never struck me as the lovable type.

Seeing Red म्हणाले...

Since I've never been loved, I get love by spending OPM, noblesse oblige. So the "little people" can love me from a distance.

Was Madonna available for comment?

Didn't he tie her up and beat her when they were married?

'As I look back over my life in romance, I don't feel that I have ever been loved'

Penn certainly loves himself.

Paddy O म्हणाले...

We have a way of interpreting the past through the lens of our present, even going so far as to think our present experience actually determines the past.

This is, I think, especially true in romance and sexuality. We protect our perceived vulnerability and brokenness by asserting what we now experience was always the true and deeper reality.

In effect, we throw our past selves under the bus, but the ego has to do what it has to do to protect the present self.

"As I look back over my life in romance, I don't feel that I have ever been loved."

You've got to give him credit for phrasing that in terms of his own feelings and his present perspective.

He doesn't assert what he doesn't know. He doesn't say Madonna/Robin Wright never loved him.

Ann Althouse म्हणाले...

"Penn certainly loves himself."

Does he? Maybe he feels unlovable.

Icepick म्हणाले...

Penn's work in Haiti is amazing though, he walks the walk.

That's because his stand-ins have worked with professional film crews to block everything out for him before hand. He just has to show up, hit his marks and make concern face on-camera.

Synova म्हणाले...

And he never once thought.... "What was I doing to treat her that way?" And wonders if he has ever loved?

test म्हणाले...

This might be an interesting topic, but not with such an idiot as the hook. Seriously, glorifying a man who set freedom in his country back 100 years? Spicoli's ability to think is so compromised how could we value any observation he might make?

mccullough म्हणाले...

Boomer Narcissism.

jungatheart म्हणाले...

Mystic River was a good movie.

Synova म्हणाले...

Is it admirable that he expresses this in terms of his feelings? He feels that he's never been loved isn't claiming to know that his "loves" didn't love him? But that's what "this person wasn't invested that way" means, right? They weren't emotionally invested in him.

I would suppose that there are cases where the fault in a divorce is completely one sided... the other person was abusive or unfaithful. But in general terms, in relationships, who's innocent? Even in marriages that don't break up, who blames the other person for failing to love properly? Don't you ask yourself, have *I* been loving that person and making sure he feels loved?

madAsHell म्हणाले...

Love is an un-sustainable chemical imbalance.

After all the squishiness wears off, then you realize that you can either accept the responsibility, or pay for a release.

Strelnikov म्हणाले...

Well, I certainly don't love him.

Marie म्हणाले...

'It can make somebody very bitter and very hard and closed off, but I find it does the opposite to me.'

Because he's just that special.

Seeing Red म्हणाले...

It depends on how he defines love.

Plus he's marrying actresses.

They're not exactly known for depth.

Is his love adulation of him and how great he is?

Seeing Red म्हणाले...

He needs to marry a red stater from a flyover state who will make him take out the garbage.

Automatic_Wing म्हणाले...

Perhaps because he's a complete douchebag?

Lem Vibe Bandit म्हणाले...

'There is no shame in saying that we all want to be loved by someone.

Citizen Penn wants to persuade people that he love them so much that they ought to love him back... only he wants love on his own terms... those are the only terms anybody ever knows... his own.

He should get saved. Then he'll believe that Jesus loves him.

jacksonjay म्हणाले...

Interesting to me that the schoolmarm wonders if Sean "really" does love Sean!

As a man, this is typical dawg self-pity, looking for a sympathetic female ear (heart)! Wow is me! Nobody loves Sean! I'm so pitiful! Come on ladies, don't fall for this bullshit!

"feel that I have ever been loved."

Dickweed Penn? What is there to love? He sells himself to dictators and prostitutes his 'humitarian' services with photo ops.

Yes nobody loves a shyster.

Bayoneteer म्हणाले...

An amazingly self-absorbed individual this Sean Penn.

traditionalguy म्हणाले...

Sean is probably right that the real Sean has never been loved. But the fake Sean has demanded summission and love from every person he could use for his entire life...probaby hundreds of them that he has used and discarded when he was finished.

Sorry Sean. I feel no sympathy for your narcissistic supply demands.

Chef Mojo म्हणाले...

The man has spent his entire professional life carefully cultivating the image of a complete and utter asshole, and he's mystified by the fact that he's unloved?

Give yourself a big face palm there, buddy.

Sam L. म्हणाले...

He married Madonna. Shoulda wised up at that point.

ricpic म्हणाले...

Nothing more embarrassing (to other men) than a man emoting. Nothing more fascinating to women.

bagoh20 म्हणाले...

You never really know until you need that kidney from someone. If they offer, that's affection, but true love is expressed by the heart.

Humperdink म्हणाले...

Well Chavez loves him, as does Castro (both). If he is looking for female love, there's always Cristina Fernández de Kirchner of Argentina. Seems like a good fit. Or Ted Turner's ex-spouse.

Scott M म्हणाले...

Says Sean Penn, who doesn't "feel that I have ever been loved."

Is that common among socialists? It would explain a whole lot of things...

holdfast म्हणाले...

Look him up in the Hollywood Dictionary under "Aging Poorly".

Howard म्हणाले...

I'd whinge like a baby if I lost Jenny/The Princess Bride. Success has it's price.

Unlike Ms. Hathaway, Penn voluntarily shows the world his cooter.

SunnyJ म्हणाले...

Where to start?

Seanie needs to drop the I if he wants to figure out marriage.

I'd say this is consistent in his political choices...poor critical thinking skills and poorer still judgement.

The world is just not measuring up...wtf? How can it be? They are all failing me...I'm looking at you and wondering why its not a mirror image.

Bottom line: Narcisstic pain in the ass syndrome.

glenn म्हणाले...

Actually the I I I Me Me Me stuff is very revealing. Nobody worth being in a loving long term relationship with is going to put up with the likes of Sean Penn for more than 5 minutes. He's a prick.

glenn म्हणाले...

As are most of the folks his age.

NoraCharles म्हणाले...

It's impossible to know what goes on between 2 people behind closed doors but I really don't think Robin Wright was the problem in that marriage.

JAL म्हणाले...

Wonder how well he studied and worked at loving the woman he married.

No, not really. It's a 3D who-cares. But as long as it's about him ....

damikesc म्हणाले...

So, self-absorbed narcissist finds marriage challenging. Stunning.
