It's twelve twelve twelve.

Should I wait 'til twelve twelve to say that?

At twelve twelve today, what will you do? It's our last chance to line up the numbers, which we've been doing since January 1, 2001, which became especially satisfying when we could do it with double digits on October 10, 2010, something we were able to do again last year, and are doing one last time today — last time, unless you picture yourself surviving beyond the turn of the next century. Really, are you that optimistic? There are those who see all of us going down a week from tomorrow.

Turned 40 on binary day 101010.

I enjoy these sort of things, probably will have a few good meals and some time playing games with my daughter to celebrate. Like most days.

I'm gonna eat a dozen donuts, but I lack a dodecahedron box in which to carry them.

Then I'll play dozens, recite the Apostle's creed, and count my two extra toes.

What! An apocalypse has a dark side? Who knew?

I have a printed label from 05/05/05 05:05 taped inside my locker at work. I won't be at work at noon today, so there won't be a matching one for this year with all of the dozens.

What are we calling this? Dozens Day? Dozenmas? It's most likely a once-in-lifetime occurrence... But then, so are all of the other less numerologically sexy days.

I saw a couple of ads in the mail last night for the Seminole casino. One showed an asteroid about to strike the Earth, with the tag line: "This Could Be Your Last Chance!" On the other side, the blurb asked, "Do you believe in Doomsday?" and offered "Free Play" on the evening of 12/21/12. The other ad showed the Mayan calendar graphic and offered "Free Play For Survivors" on 12/22/12, just in case the world doesn't come to an end! I guess we've got another nine days of hype, and a big "End of the World Party" on the night of Friday 12/21/12 for all of the people who aren't out celebrating Yule with the Odinists or the Midwinter solstice with the Wiccans (It's probably a little chilly most places for sky-clad!). Then on Saturday 12/22, we'll all wake up and say, "Ha, I guess the Mayans were just kidding!" And we'll have a big The World Didn't End (This Time) Party to celebrate surviving our close call.

How long do you expect to live? My great-great grandmother lived to just shy of her 107th birthday, despite growing up and living in god-knows what kind of conditions. Her daughter lived to 91, though her granddaughter (my grandmother) was only 74, and was very sick (smoking-related, mostly, though my great grandmother and great-great grandmother lived with it) towards the end.

I've always been extremely healthy, and, knock on wood, cannot name a single family member who's suffered cancer (believe it or not). I suspect that I could get to 90 easily. That will be 2070. But, by that time, maybe living to age 90 won't be so impressive - maybe centurians will be the norm, and I could see the next century. The idea of my youngest brother, born in 1991, living to the next century seems plausible.

Three centuries, could you imagine?

Not with Obamacare.

It's my birthday today. For added symmetry, I'm 44. And for those who say this is a once-in-a-lifetime occurence, I'll have a hearty laugh for you when I'm 144.

kids born today have a real chance at living extended lifetimes. They are making real advances in anti-aging and the associated fields.

Today, during my drive into work, I was listening to a recorded lecture on particle physics.

And it occurred to me: What if these really, really smart guys actually do figure it all out?

What then?

Does it mean that one of the gods wins the bet and they wipe out the Universe and start a new round of wagering?

Well, anyway, we're all probably safe for the time being.

Well, at least until 12:12 pm.

If nothing else, I would think that the environment that children of my generation (born 1980+) grew and developed, compared to that of our grandparents, would make a difference. We have eaten far better (or worse, perhaps - more variety and nutrients, but more sugar and processed foods) and we have lived with far cleaner air and water overall. No lead, far less smoke and smog. Who knows?

Then again, perhaps someone will publish plans describing how to build a fusion bomb in your kitchen, using easily obtainable materials.

Just how long would the world last if thermonuclear weapons were as easy to obtain as a BB gun? And what sort of world would it be?

I will be thinking that 12/12/12 12:12 is just another number, as likely as any other combination of numbers. Oops, that's wrong. as any sequence of numbers. I will then marvel when it is 12/12/12 12:13, and on throughout the day, everyday, for the rest of my life.

My youngest nephew was born 5/6/78. His son was born on 5/6/99.

My birthday was on Easter when I was 5, 10 and 16.

My sister's birthday is 12/24 when all through the house, not a creature was stirring ...

For those of us who use a rational way of writing the date- date, month, year- there is still 21:02 21/12/2012; as a bonus it is the day that the Mayapocalypse is predicted.
