Great Tower guys. The flat places like Texas and the glaciated mid-west need towers to feel better.

Can't find the thread where I asked before, but was anybody else getting audio of I Can't Believe It's Not Butter ads on the main Althouse page this morning or have I finally lost my marbles?

MadisonMan म्हणाले...

@Farmer, I also got some kind of audio this morning once when I opened up an althouse page. Don't recall what it was, but it went away when I closed the tab that althouse was in.

Only happened once.

A shop call at the Althouse portal drew a huge crowd on Monday, despite calls for stricter credit card use...

Eric the Fruit Bat म्हणाले...

I've always been a fan of green eyes and that tower could use one, right on top.

edutcher म्हणाले...

You think that's something?

You should've seen the blue-green contacts The Blonde used to wear. She practically glowed in the dark.

I didn't, but I'm running Chrome. I was also getting a message about a Shockwave plug-in crashing while I was here, so that may have been what I was missing.

Check your browser settings.

I fixed the problem and deleted the off-topic complaints where they appeared. I appreciated being alerted to this, and the deletions were intended to avoid distractions.

This is an open-thread, and you're welcome to discuss how annoying auto-play is, but please note that I have fixed the problem

I cant believe I got auto-played...

That tower is splendidly Soviet.

अनामित म्हणाले...

What's the frequency, Kenneth?

Nonapod म्हणाले...

That tower is splendidly Soviet.

It's cold and impersonal enough but it's probably not bizarre enough.

AlanKH म्हणाले...

Some will sell their dreams for small desires
Or lose the race to rats
Get caught in ticking traps
And start to dream of somewhere
To relax their restless flight

Nonapod,

The Kiev crematorium looks to weird to have been designed by someone non-Western. The Tblisi building looks like it belongs on some alien world in the Doctor Who universe. At first glimpse I thought the Belorussian exhibition center was an airport terminal. I hope that Azerbaijani hotel was built on the least tectonically active point on Earth.

AlanKH म्हणाले...

bpm4532,

Winner!

You want green? Check out this picture of an aurora from Norway over the weekend, from the Spaceweather.com site.

Wow!

Can we discuss how annoying Autotune is?

But seriously, I wonder how many people have purchased something based upon a pop up ad of any sort, let alone an autoplayed one.

I can't read I Can't Believe it's Not Butter without remembering this.

Patrick म्हणाले...

That was hilarious, Coketown.

Petunia म्हणाले...

Ooh! Love the color! Location, please?

ricpic म्हणाले...

Is that an airport tower?

Let's all go to the airport
And watch the planes fly in and out,
Beat a retreat to Joe's Bar & Grill
And down stout after stout.

Ann Althouse म्हणाले...

@Petunia Lincoln, Nebraska (photo taken last summer).

Ann Althouse म्हणाले...

It's not an airport tower. It's downtown. I don't really know what's going on there.

Chip S. म्हणाले...

I Can't Believe It's Not an Airport!

Petunia म्हणाले...

Thank you, Ann! I too thought it was a control tower.

Aaaand after spending faaaar too much time trying to find it online, I found a skyline photo of Lincoln that, combined with a map that offered both map and satellite options, and after noticing the shadow cast by the tower on the satellite view, because the green color was not visible...I determined that this structure is located about three blocks north of the state capitol building.

Further research revealed that this building is NOT in fact the Yankee Hill Cemetery, as shown on one map, but rather...

...the Windstream Communications Building and Tower.

TaDaaaaa! ;)

Petunia म्हणाले...

And wow, there's some seriously bizarre grammar in that last comment!

kentuckyliz म्हणाले...

We glaciated midwesterners don't build towers to feel better. We build them for a purpose 'cuz we're practical like that.

What makes us feel better is ownership of the best farmland on earth, thanks to the glaciers. And the farmland values are skyrocketing. Cha chingggg.

(grew up in IA...where even the frozen ground smells fertile...KY soil is useful only for grazing up and growing really strong leg bones in Thoroughbreds)

kentuckyliz म्हणाले...

I remember in the 80s, the financial aid application form included asking for and counting the asset value of farmland. Hence, farm families who couldn't "spend" their farmland didn't qualify for financial aid, either. They might qualify for Medicaid and food stamps, but not financial aid for college.

The FAFSA formula changed to count only investment farms that you didn't live on. If you live on your farm, you don't count its asset value. Before and after, you always counted the income the farm generated, through reporting your income tax figures.

I had an upset farm family offer to bring in a box of soil, or to donate a quarter acre of land to the college to pay their kid's tuition. It wasn't just.

I grew up in the city (well, suburbs) and I still honestly cannot comprehend how farm economies work. I think they wouldn't without the government subsidies that started or escalated during the 80s farm crisis.

My farmer BIL tries to goad me by going on about mandatory sterilization of welfare mothers...I used to respond insisting also you gotta sterilize the Johnny Appleseeds who impregnate them and whose fertility rate is far higher (actually or potentially)...and I would like to compare your government welfare checks as a farmer to the AFDC benefits of my solo mom friends. You're a bigger welfare whore than they are. You produce steaks, they produce consequence free nookie. (That was before the reforms to child support enforcement laws)
