"A man accused of desecrating the Koran was burned alive by a mob at a Pakistani police station..."

"The unnamed man was a traveller who spent Thursday night at a mosque in Seeta, in the southern Sindh province, local imam Maulvi Memon said. He claimed the charred remains of the Koran were found there the next morning, adding, 'He was alone in the mosque during the night. There was no one else there to do this terrible thing.'"

Religion of Peace.

But we cannot allow anyone to slander the Prophet of Islam.

Coulter looks more and more right every day.

Heck, wasn't the national press corp itching to do the same to Wayne Lapierre of the NRA following his blasphemy at the press conference?

So,are Muslims crazy, murderous assholes ready to brutally torture and kill anyone who might insult Allah or the Prophet or the Koran, just as Inga insists, or not?

Big Mike म्हणाले...

A bunch of threads ago someone criticized my comment that Muslims are trying to go from the 20th century to the 12th as being too generous. I think whomever it was suggested the 7th? I'm starting to think that not only was I too generous, but maybe he was too.

Paco Wové म्हणाले...

I don't know about "Muslims". There does seem to be something wrong with lots of Pakistanis, though.

Cedarford म्हणाले...

Credit the Pakis with at least not kow-towing to "Rule of Lawyers".

Their local variants of what Kahlid Sheik Mohammed do not get to hang around 11+ years before the lawyers are finally ready to do a trial.

Paco Wové म्हणाले...

Nobody on earth appears to be more eager in routing out heretics than your average rural Pakistani imam. Even if they have to create the heretics themselves.

Cedarford म्हणाले...

Meaning there is a lot to be said for a lynch mob hammering home what expected social norms are, rather than what happens here - with American lawyers dragging out due process for years and lecturing us the whole time we "Must!" consider consider scum innocent until the lawyers determine matters in a series of high priest-like ceremonies.
(For which the lawyers are paid huge chunks of money from the rest of us)

Some of the folks in my social circle will heap much scorn on Christianity whenever they hear about an abortion clinic being bombed or a priest molesting a kid or a solider's funeral being protested, and I'm quick to point out that it ain't right to judge an entire religion based on the actions of a few.

Am I wrong to be doing that?

ricpic म्हणाले...

Yes, because with one less Koran how could Muslims remember that their first duty is JIHAD?...yowzah!

Ann Althouse said...What I think is racist is spreading the fake story that Muslims fly into an insane rage over a YouTube video. This is a disgusting stereotype.

I found this a curious quote. Obviously, the Benghazi story didn't spread this fact, it took advantage of it. Since when are plain facts disgusting stereotypes?

@purple, the only example you gave which approximates a "mob" instead of a single individual going off the rails is Westboro Baptist Church, and no Christian I know of regards them as anything like mainstream.

By contrast the example cited in this post, the sexual assault on Lara Logan in Tahir square, nearly every example of Muslim violence against "unbelievers" are large groups of people acting as mobs.

Or to put it a different way, if Christians acted the way Muslims in the Middle East and Central Asia act towards people who express skepticism towards their religion, then your friends would be dead. And brutally so.

@purple "I'm quick to point out that it ain't right to judge an entire religion based on the actions of a few."

Don't ignore the teachings of a group.

If a Klan member rounds up a Republican and kills him for wanting to give blacks the right to vote ... should that reflect on the Klan and the Democrats who formed them?

If an Anabaptist wants to start a war against state religion and raises an army. Should that reflect on Christians who say that baptism is to be an informed decision and not done against your will as a child or adult?

Read the Koran and the history of their prophet. Read the histories of the people you are discussing and understand the issues.

William म्हणाले...

Thanks to Cedarford for pointing out the plus side of burning people alive. So many people refuse to see all sides of this nuanced issue.....Does Islam allow tattooing? If so, I would recommend that all travellers to Pakistan have a Koranic verse be tattooed on their body. This would forestall any possibility of being burned alive.

Very KKK-esque. Or like when an Irish mob in 19th century New Orleans attacked a jail and murdered some Italians they were angry with.

True dat. The differences&similitaries between various religions has always interested me. Which is why I understand that while a lot of terrible things have been done in the name of God or Allah or even Zeus it is usually from the teachings being twisted rather than what was actually trying to be taught.

Well, 'cept maybe Zeus. The lessons he tried to impress upon us were actually pretty fucked up, no?

Why do so many Muslims go bazoo when a Koran is desecrated as opposed to Christians or Jews?

Because, according to the Asha'arite theology that underlies much conservative Sunni practice, the Koran is not just the inspired word of God, it is, literally, the words of God, and has existed co-eternally with God.

It is not like the Christian Bible, in which the Holy Spirit inspires human agents in history to write down God's will for His people, e.g. if the Israelites would have followed the teachings of Yahweh, there might not have been a need for the book of Jeremiah.

Not so the Koran. Every letter of it was written by God before all time, and there is nothing about it that can be changed.

This teaching was very effectively criticized within Islam by the Mutalizites, but they lost the battle by the end of the 10th century, and the Asha'arites took over within Sunni Islam.

I'm not approving. I'm just explaining.

It could be worse. A black immigrant crossing into the progressive state of South Africa is almost guaranteed to be raped or murdered by blacks in the progressive state of South Africa. Poor or unimportant indigenous whites suffer the same fate. The progressive state of South Africa is an apartheid state by virtue of its progressive constitution and the actions of its black indigenous population.

It could be worse. We must remember that in less than a century, left-wing regimes, including: communist and socialist, were responsible for the murder of over 100 hundred million men, women, and children, and the enslavement of over 1 billion.

It could be worse. Since the mid-Twentieth century, policies such as eugenics, Roe vs Wade, and reproductive rights have been responsible for the premature death by scalpel and vacuum, or some other tool of torture and homicide, of nearly one hundred million men and women, Harry(s), Nancy(s), Barack(s), and Susan(s).

Well, Islam has been worse, but its violations of life, dignity, and liberty were prosecuted over a period exceeding 1000 years.

Whether it is religion, ideology, or personal philosophy, each can be judged by the principles it engenders. While they are incapable of either predicting or condemning individuals through extrapolation, they create a predisposition toward word and deed.

Young Hegelian:

That lines up with my experience debating with Muslim friends:

The Koran is the word of God, from Allah to the prophet Mohammad and that's that. You'll just end up in an endless argument.

It's not a book of this world, altered by time, subject to alterations.

Mix that up with a feudal system of land ownership, millions of Pakis moving into Karachi, tribal customs, illiteracy and economic unrest...

and you've got stuff like this.

@purple, you're not particularly open-minded, are you? What if the murderous Muslim mobs really are the mainstream and they say otherwise to fool shallow thinkers like you? The Muslim mobs stretch from the northeast corner of Africa across the north of Africa and from there down to Nigeria and across the Arabian peninsula as far east as every country whose name ends in "istan." That's a lot of coincidences.
