"The Joe Biden that you saw last night is the Democratic Party."

Rush Limbaugh, just now. "Biden did exactly what was desired, and in the process hurt himself and Obama.... His job was to excite the base.... They came out of their shell: none of this compassion and understanding... The base wants blood. The base wants rude.... Biden gave them exactly what they wanted."

UPDATE: How it looked, per Rush: "Paul Ryan was a son who was a little embarrassed for his father... trying to tell his dad that the world has passed him by" without subjecting him to public humiliation.

I thought the same thing. I wouldn't have subjected him to public humiliation either. I don't think most people would have. It's cultural. A younger person publicly humiliating an older person is disrespectful and comes off very badly.

Several people who favor Biden have remarked positively on the fact that Biden was older than Ryan, suggesting that he treated Ryan like a "little boy" and deservedly so.

It usually says more about the speaker that they would consider it reasonable to act this way with a young, inexperienced, possibly foolish person -- if one is able to see Ryan in those terms. Are the young to be laughed at? At they to be mocked, dismissed and insulted?

If Biden had played the role of a patient, elder mentor, then it might have been understandable for people to suggest that he was debating a young, hot-headed radical with grandiose plans. But as Biden played the role of the hot-head, Ryan came across as Rush suggests -- a younger man put into a socially awkward position.

I do think that Biden clearly demonstrated what is most ugly about politics on all sides. He perfectly personified what we all hate. The refusal to listen, the use of talking points, the refusal to give on any point, the ridicule instead of respect, the appeals to the base at the expense of everyone else, the abandonment of trying to change minds with reason and truth. What he was last night is exactly what's wrong.

Two wars on a credit card demonstrate how ignorant Biden is. Every war we have fought has been with borrowed money. Wars are expensive. Even during WW2 despite 90% marginal rates, the Federal govt borrow money, ie, use a credit card or war bonds to fund the war.

Well Iraq is over and we are putting an additional one trillion per year on the credit card with no appreciable result.

If Biden invigorated the base then it should be noted the Democrat base prefers rude, lying buffoons as its political leaders.

Sorun म्हणाले...

If Biden's performance was just to excite the base -- doing damage control on Obama's performance -- then at least Obama and Biden are working as a team. So that's good.

The Smerkin' Merkin, Herr Biden, represented the Dem's Hail Mary play. Obama was who he is in his debate. He won't be able to get more knowledgeable because he can't change who he is. But he can get angrier. But will that work or will it backfire?
Therefore, Joe was also their Judas Goat; sent out to test if his behavior would play well enough for Obama to try it.
The result can't make them happy.

Colonel Angus म्हणाले...

This simply does not work anymore, not with juries anyway (judges are another matter). Clearly it didn't play too well in front of the Ultimate Jury either. 48-44.

The longer I watched last night, the more it became clear that Biden, like Obama, is utterly out of touch with ordinary America. He didn't see his own unforced error. He never toned it down; I think he just got a little tired toward the end. A lifetime cocooned safely away in a series of well paid government jobs, nestled deep in the progressive tank, pampered, privileged, and protected from reality. Times have changed out in the world.

What a joke that everyone keeps saying he's a nice man. He's so obviously not. Just a spoiled, petulant old clown who will say anything to keep his cushy job.

Fifty percent of uncommitted voters who tuned into Thursday night's vice presidential debate in Danville, Ky., said they see Vice President Joe Biden as the winner over Mitt Romney's GOP running mate Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., according to an instant poll taken by CBS News.

Of the 431 polled immediately following the debate, 31 percent deemed Ryan the winner, and 19 percent said they felt it was a tie. Party-wise it's a switch from last week's presidential debate, which uncommitted voters handed easily to Romney over President Obama.

furious_a म्हणाले...

AndyR: Of the 431 polled immediately following the debate, 31 percent deemed Ryan the winner, and 19 percent said they felt it

Well, yes, that's just CBS, then there are the other polls:

The instant polls:
CNBC: Ryan 56%-36%...
CBS: Biden 50%-31%...
CNN: Ryan 48%-44%
AP: Ryan 51%-43%.

...then there are the internals on the CNN poll, which break even more strongly for Ryan on likeability, etc.:

28% said the debate made them more likely to vote for Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney and 21% said the faceoff made them more likely to vote to re-elect President Barack Obama.

55% said that the vice president did better than expected, with 51% saying that the congressman from Wisconsin performed better than expected.

By a 50%-41% margin, debate watchers say that Ryan rather than Biden better expressed himself.

Seven in ten said Biden was seen as spending more time attacking his opponent, and that may be a contributing factor in Ryan's 53%-43% advantage on being more likable. Ryan also had a slight advantage on being more in touch with the problems of average Americans.

Voter ID imposes a cost on some voters, which they must pay in order to vote. That cost is in the form of paying for the ID, of paying for the travel to the limited offices providing the ID, and in the time it takes to get the ID.

It's not possible to get the ID without paying these costs. Even where the ID given for free, people still have to pay to get it.

Red herring. Did you watch the debate? No-one is saying to let them have the bomb. Biden said Obama-Biden team have the world united in upholding strong sanctions against Iran. He challenged The Whelp to say what they would do differently. The Whelp was stumped.

c) "I think the idea is to leave that up to the states and get the federal government out of it entirely."

Again, Ryan said in response to the debate question of exceptions in cases of rape or incest that life begins at conception. He never said "let the states decide." this is the same Paul Ryan who has stood cheek to jowl with Todd Akin and even sponsored the radical personhood bill.

Again, Ryan said in response to the debate question of exceptions in cases of rape or incest that life begins at conception. He never said "let the states decide." this is the same Paul Ryan who has stood cheek to jowl with Todd Akin and even sponsored the radical personhood bill.

And the President voted to allow doctors to slaughter babies who survive abortion attempts.

Oh, and one other famous Republicant lie before I reapply my nose to the grindstone:

Lie: The wealthy are "job creators" who will create more jobs (in USA) if they get more tax cuts. This is a lie along with trickle down economic theory and the nonsense that tax cuts create more revenue than they cost.

They don't the rich don't give money away, they hoard it. They get richer by laying people off, cutting wages and cutting benefits. They also invest in places like China or El Salvador where they can get lower wages.

Plus, the USA has run the experiments on this sorry excuse for rational theory. 10 years of very expensive tax cuts for the rich and what did we get?

Unemployment went through the roof under George W. Bush/Duck Cheney.

You can find a similar chart for federal fiscal deficits.

"How's that trickle down working for ya?"

This kind of explains the entire liberal worldview when it comes to economics. It's bizarro. They really think Mitt Romney has a gigantic mattress that he stuffs his millions under.

Rich people invest their money. Money sitting in some static place is useless to them.

It's weird that you think rich people only do two things with money: Give it away or hoard it. Both options do nothing to benefit the economy. Did it occur to you that they invest the money or spend it (both of which drive economic growth)?

So, do you have evidence to support your assertion? Or, is this just accepted wisdom on the left?

Somewhat related: The Taranto Principle.

What is the Taranto Principle? It is a principle laid down by the Wall Street Journal's perceptive editorialist, James Taranto. Taranto, in his column "Best of the Web Today," surveys the media and reports daily on their output with special emphasis on their contradictions, hypocrisies and -- most deliciously -- imbecilities. Like all other thoughtful observers of American media, Taranto recognizes that they are heavily biased toward the Democratic Party and the left in general. Yet, while many who hold that this advances the Democratic Party and the left, Taranto believes that that it has a harmful effect on left-wing politics, often causing left-wing candidates to lose at the polls.

According to the Taranto Principle, the media's failure to hold left-wingers accountable for bad behavior merely encourages the left's bad behavior to the point that its candidates are repellent to ordinary Americans...

According to this variation of the Taranto Principle, the media circulate infamies that encourage leftists to confect greater infamies, thus causing the defamed candidate to cop the sympathy vote. That vote will have consequences in this increasingly bizarre election...

Voter ID imposes a cost on some voters, which they must pay in order to vote. That cost is in the form of paying for the ID, of paying for the travel to the limited offices providing the ID, and in the time it takes to get the ID.

It's not possible to get the ID without paying these costs. Even where the ID given for free, people still have to pay to get it.

push-lease. By that logic, needing to take a bus to a polling station would be a cost. Because the bus would cost money, and waiting for the bus to arrive would cost time.
When you think of all the things you need an ID for, you'd think that, in the interst of empowering poor people dems would make a civil rights issue to get people access to ID cards. Without them, I guess certain people are unable to do the most basic things like pick up packages at the post office. Are these people without ID's living underground? Are they mole people?
We've been having this conversation for years. What ever time or cost that you say could be imposed could have been paid long before an election. People should have those ID's a yeah simply in the course of living in the US. But if they don't, the idea that its a hardship to get one is ludicrous.
Every time there's an election, MTV gets out the Rock the vote billboards. You'd think that somewhere along the way somebody somewhere might set up a booth that allows you to get your ID along with providing any other info about elections. Or give people the info needed to get the I'd they'll use to vote, and which will incidentally allow them to function at the most basic level in society.
By the way, when you get your license/ID are you can also register to vote. See how that works?

The Ida that there is some undue hardship being imposed is a myth, and frankly the idea that people don't have ID's they'll need to function in society and you aren't fighting for the principle of getting them that ID so they can function in society means you don't really care about poor people.

Bishops point out that Joe in fact lied:
Last night, the following statement was made during the Vice Presidential debate regarding the decision of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to force virtually all employers to include sterilization and contraception, including drugs that may cause abortion, in the health insurance coverage they provide their employees:

“With regard to the assault on the Catholic Church, let me make it absolutely clear. No religious institution—Catholic or otherwise, including Catholic social services, Georgetown hospital, Mercy hospital, any hospital—none has to either refer contraception, none has to pay for contraception, none has to be a vehicle to get contraception in any insurance policy they provide. That is a fact. That is a fact.”

This is not a fact. The HHS mandate contains a narrow, four-part exemption for certain “religious employers.” That exemption was made final in February and does not extend to “Catholic social services, Georgetown hospital, Mercy hospital, any hospital,” or any other religious charity that offers its services to all, regardless of the faith of those served.

HHS has proposed an additional “accommodation” for religious organizations like these, which HHS itself describes as “non-exempt.” That proposal does not even potentially relieve these organizations from the obligation “to pay for contraception” and “to be a vehicle to get contraception.” They will have to serve as a vehicle, because they will still be forced to provide their employees with health coverage, and that coverage will still have to include sterilization, contraception, and abortifacients. They will have to pay for these things, because the premiums that the organizations (and their employees) are required to pay will still be applied, along with other funds, to cover the cost of these drugs and surgeries.

USCCB continues to urge HHS, in the strongest possible terms, actually to eliminate the various infringements on religious freedom imposed by the mandate.

So, Biden lied about the obligations imposed on catholic hospitals. That is not a fact Joe. That is not a fact.
In fact, isn't it apparent that the more emphatic Joe is about something being truthful the morel likely it is that he is lying through his teeth?

Now I,ll give Joe the benefit of the doubt here. Perhaps he doesn't know the policies of which he speaks. Perhaps no one told him specifically about things in the bills the administration passes so its therefore not a lie when he disembles about it. Just like no one told hi, Joe Biden, personally about the calls for more security therefore he didn't know about it.

A lifetime cocooned safely away in a series of well paid government jobs, nestled deep in the progressive tank, pampered, privileged, and protected from reality. Times have changed out in the world.

Forty years ago ... when we were still the dominant economic power in the world, because the competition was literally rebuilding from the rubble of WWII ... we could afford to indulge in Progressive policies and employ those like Joe Biden, as described above. And our friends in Europe could go even farther in this regard, because we were making sure they could institute their own health care systems instead of being grafted into the Soviet health care system.

But times HAVE changed ... and the free world no longer has the financial, economic, and demographic cushions that would make it possible (let alone prudent) to continue outsourcing our responsibilities and initiative to cocooned leaders like Joe Biden.

lets try this again. In order to sustain medicare like it is today there will have to be a massive payroll increase on everybody who has a job. EVERYBODY. "Taxing the rich" will not provide enough money to sustain the system for another ten years. The system is broke. People who can afford it buy suplementary insurance to cover what medicare doesn't.
The system is broken. It needs to be revamped. If that means vouchers for those that can't afford suplimental insurance then let's go that route. Cost increases occur because there are too amny hands between the consumer and the supplier. Let's simplify that.
