"They" = the police in Islamabad, Pakistan. The line is spoken by a student protester, who also says:
"Our policemen are not any better than the Americans because they are trying to stop us. They are in the same league as them, they are heretics like them...
"The police are also becoming an accomplice of blasphemers.... "
According to
an al Jazeera article linked by
Drudge (who uses the headline "US Embassy in Pakistan Under Seige"). More from al Jazeera:
In Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pakistani Kashmir, over two hundred protesters set fire to an effigy of Barack Obama, the US president.
"We will make known it by burning the effigy of Obama and his allies that a blasphemer deserves to be burnt to death," said Maulana Mehmood ul Hassan Ashraf, secretary general of Jamiat-e-Ulema-e-Islam.

The Obama "Our Stripes" flag next to the finger streaks in blood left by the consulate attack victims as they were dragged to their deaths.
Think about it, Jesus ended up crucified by the Romans, but his adherents eventually overtook the Roman empire and still sit in Rome. If you believe that Mohammed is the greater prophet, can his adherents do less? What short of running the Caliphate from Washington would be worthy? Just wondering...
It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood, isn't it?
But the WH is having fun with Beyonce and JayZ, so all is well.
Of course, the protester in the photo wants to get rid of the American embassy, but not his American blue jeans.
Is it really under siege? There's a demonstration and some police, but under siege? A siege is something extended in time. This is not. Yet.
I'd send Naomi Wolf and some vulval bananas, although her tight smile alone could win the negotiations.
Let each according to their custom. They can burn our embassy and we cut all ties, military ties, all forms of aid and assure them they will never get another World Bank and IMF loan and all trade. Same for Afghanistan.

I think Obama should invite all the moderate Muslims to the White House for a 'beer summit.' Halal, of course.
That will leave all the extremists back home alone and he can drone them to death.
Billary's on board so it can deposit its female half onto to White House in 2016.
All the reports I see say "hundreds" chanting here and there. Hundreds? That's not a lot of people in these places where they have little else to do. Is this all just a small number of radicals coordinating via the new ubiquitous communication technology? Is this really that big a movement, or is it just being very well done?
They could certainly demolish the embassy but they could not, on their own, rebuild it. They could not build a bicycle if you gave them the plans and a thousand years to get it done.

Not sure I've got it in me this morning, but someone really needs to find a clip of the "blasphemer" scene from Life of Brian to post here.
The Muslim SOBs are ashamed of sexuality of mere women, ashamed of their Prophet and ashamed of the injustice of their own murderous rages.
That Coptics are still alive and have the courage to remind us of what they have endured from Muslims for 1500 years is more than they can handle.
Pakistan has a nukes, they can't be all that dumb.
"Come on Barack, more apologizing please, someone might get hurt."
Please don't tell me you are referring to the statement made by the embassy officials who had a mob baying for their blood- a statement which Obama didn't sanction and actively repudiated later? That 'apology'?
And incase you have forgotten, Obama has launched probably hundreds of drone strikes in Pakistan and Afghanistan. If he is an appeaser or sympathizer to the Muslim world, well he's got a strange way of showing it. It's not an accident that they are burning an effigy of Obama too.
Pakistan has a nukes, they can't be all that dumb.

9/11/01 raised the question if Islam was compatible with the modern world.
The answer increasingly appears to be 'No.'
Well get to work Shouting Thomas! Go out ye men and impregnate rhe nation.
Well, yes sense and intelligence are often separate.
Anyway all this Middle East stuff, with dead diplomats or QE3, or the incredibly damning Fast and Furious developments, or cabinets members committing crimes is just a distraction. The important thing is that a man with no power or involvement in any of it said something back in May. Maybe that's what caused all of this. That or Bush did it.
Well get to work Shouting Thomas! Go out ye men and impregnate rhe nation.
Shit, I wish! Wish I had four or five more kids.
Got nobody but myself to blame for that.

Islam does not favor the intelligent, it favors the faithful. The more fundamentalist Pakistan becomes, the more they kowtow to that element of their society, the more stupid they become.
And with nukes, the more dangerous.

Indian Muslims aren't appreciably better on this and the gov't has to kowtow to them somewhat as well.
The fact that the cops are actually dealing with protesters and are now on the side of the blasphemers suggests that not all the Egyptians are hard Coe jihadists.
Perhaps we shouldn't cut all ties. Back when the former leader was in power we didnt have to deal with this. And we can blame Obama for this dirsctly. He demanded regime change and the backed the Muslim brotherhoo with no certainty that they would produce anything close to a stable govt.
But again, cutting off all aid may not be the right course. However, we are now at the stage where giving any future aid becomes conditional on how Egypt acts. Is Egypt the crazies attacking our embassies, or is egypt the police the crazies now hate for not letting them burn down our embassies.
And more good news. Our consulate on the Makassar Straits in Indonesia is closed for the 2nd day.
B-b-b-ut, he lived there when he was 6. He knows how they feel. He's eaten dog with them.
"Another 'reset' button should take care of that."
Obama has been pounding his "Easy" button furiously, but nothing's happening. Damn, it always worked before.
Which just led me to another thought. The American press might be in the tank for Obama and do their best to steer controversies away from him but the foreign press and foreign crowds feel no such compunction. He might actually have to answer for something finally.
Coleridge didn't care for Muslims either.
@Minzo My point exactly, his actions to calm hostilities towards America in the Muslim world have been a series of failures. The Nobel Peace Prize, the Apology Tour, the bowing, the drone strikes, the spiking of the OBL football, hanging the Pakistani who helped with finding OBL out to dry. Inconsistent approach, arrogant sense of individual importance, conflicting messages, weak demeanor equals no respect and no fear.
Unfortunately, short of the non-Muslim world performing major genocide on the Muslim world, this problem of a very vocal Salafist tail wagging the the dog of the Ummah is one that Muslims must resolve themselves.
What really worries me is that the strength of the Salafists may come from the fact that there really isn't an established discourse of moderate Islam from within the faith itself. What we see as "moderate Islam" like Kemalist Turkey, is really genteel agnosticism putting on a face of piety with a wink & a nod from all involved. Aside from the Mutalizites, who lost out around 1100, I don't think there's been an attempt within Sunni Islam to work through a moderating theological discourse. There's been political movements that imposed moderation, but not theological ones.
The theological issues have never really addressed, but a modus vivendi was reached where the issues were held in abeyance long enough for the westernized upper classes to pour a good belt of single malt scotch.
I can't believe the Democrats aren't taking a stronger free speech stance on all this yet.
I checked out Democratic Underground and probably most were strongly in favor of agreeing with Republican nominee Mitt Romney and standing up for free speech.
There's been political movements that imposed moderation, but not theological ones.
The Shi'ites -- Najaf-variety vs. Qom -- may be the reasonable ones. They've had a gutful of oppression from the Salafists and seem to be AQ's target of choice.
The American press might be in the tank for Obama
At least one reporter may have climbed out of the tank. Margaret Brennan of CBS calls "bullshit" on Obama's crazed-mob excuse for Benghazi.
Maybe people should gather themselves and the facts before demanding a Muslim Exception clause for the 1st amendment.
I can't believe the Democrats aren't taking a stronger free speech stance on all this yet.
You haven't been paying attention to Democrats lately.

It seems to 'blaspheme' the prophet for a Muslim nation to need our help. The killings in Benghazi occurred on 9-11, a day we implicitly ask others to share our mourning and thus recognize our humanity and that of those we lost. We were humiliated in that implied request. 9-11 was authorized by a Saudi, and the Saudis earlier needed our help so as not to be threatened by Sadaam whose army had overrun Kuwait. The Libyans relied on us to eliminate the air superiority of a dictator they wanted to overthrow. In both instances those faithful to Allah had to rely on infidels. I would hypothesize that they felt humiliated. In this calculus we were thus due a humiliation from them. As infidels, the best we can do to protect ourselves is for them not to have our help.
The real world blasphemes the prophet, is the problem.
That is off topic? Really? Another shiloh "truthiness." ARM chuckles.

Up to a point, yes. But as they are wont to do, when the Muzzies get overly excitable the Hindu's then get overly chauvinistic and kill Muzzies in very large numbers. Combine the population of Pakistan and the Muslims in India and the Hindu's still out number them four to one.
As pointed out by others, they are outbreeding us but they can't feed themselves. If the West wishes to reconnect itself with it's inner asshole, the problem is easily remedied.

YoungHegelian, sorry for the long post:
That's why I'm still unresolved on the 'moderate' Muslim issue. The Muslims both bombing us and claiming moderation almost always have some contact with the West, study, immigration Turkey part of the Euro, hanging in strip clubs etc. The most moderate Muslims live in former Yugoslavia and are Europeans.
To some extent, the religion is the people, the institutions, the leaders, the economy etc, so where is the "center" that people are looking for? Islam's center is a book that is the absolute word of God, word for word. It's a prescription for all areas of life. It's got Sufis, Salafis, Wahabbis, Suni, Shi'a, etc. Mohammed Atta, after coming to the West went to Aleppo, in Syria, and found an old quarter Muslim society that he wanted to protect from the West in its 'purity.'
That's an Islam that hasn't undergone anything like the Reformation, or the Enlightenment. It's leaders are tribal, military autocrats with large youth populations.
There is an Islamic resurgence afoot, and the liberals in the West want to extend human rights, secular humanism individual liberty and rights based secular collectivism etc
The conservatives in the U.S. want to extend individual liberty, individual responsibility, their own communities based upon Judeo Christian principles, duty, honor, a strong military and free trade etc.
Whence the magic, moderate Muslim center? I just haven't experienced such a thing.

I think you should worry about Islamic fundamentalists gaining control of those weapons. Because then, they stand a good chance of destroying more than just an embassy.
Why don't we have some Muslim guys interview Naomi Wolf about her new book on her vagina?
Hilarity ensues. Multiculturalism at its finest.
@furious_a
The Shi'ites -- Najaf-variety vs. Qom -- may be the reasonable ones.
Well, certainly Stephen Schwartz thinks so, but in an Islamic world so polluted with hard-line Salafist rhetoric, can the voices of traditional Najaf Shia be heard? I mean, hells bells, they're in a life or death with their own Qom based Shiite looney-tunes. Khomeinism itself is the Sunni-ization of Shiite Islam.
We can have a Naomi Wolf Vagina Institution right next to the Ground Zero Mosque in NYC.
Bob Wright could oversee the whole thing.
@Chrisnavin,
Whence the magic, moderate Muslim center? I just haven't experienced such a thing.
I'm not sure I have, either. But my question is whether there is a storehouse within traditional Sunni doctrine from which a more moderate theology can emerge, because I really think this is a theological issue & it must be solved --- short of mass murder of the adherents --- on a theological level.
I don't know the answer to this, but my gut feeling is very pessimistic.
Amy Alkon ("The Advise Goddess") has the best take on this of all (and something I publicly stated years ago circa 2008@ Neptunus Lex blog) when she recently (9/15) stated: "The violence won't go away until the last Quran disappears from earth. The violence is built into the religion."
So true. The Koran is like those dessicated seeds that lie dormant in desert regions just waiting for a single drop of water from a rain 50 yrs later to germinate and spring into full bloom. As long as a single copy exists someone, somewhere, will always pick it up years after an interregnum of Muslim "peace" (however arrived at) to be inspired by its fighting, violent admonishments to kill and subdue all non-believers and begin the violence cycle all over again.
What has our SecState done about the protests?
I've seen nothing in the news.
What has our President done about this situation?
The only thing I've seen in the news is he is campaigning on TV and at fundraisers.
The only things I've seen the Obama administration do in response to the killing of our ambassador and the breaching of our embassies is:
1) Issue false statements about the attack in Libya, claiming it was a protest caused by the film, and now finally walking that back to a planned attack on the ambassador by terrorists. The govt deliberately lied to us.
2) Enter discussions about releasing the blind sheikh to Egypt. And then lie to us about whether or not there have been discussions (you have to parse the bureaucratic ass-covering doublespeak to recognize the flat-out lie)
That's it. Nothing else.
I'd love for someone to provide some evidence of something else our President has done, or directed to have done, to ensure the safety of our overseas missions, and to increase the penalty to nations that don't protect our embassies and consulates in their nations.
Please.
(I know our President is a miserable failure. But I would prefer a miserable failure who still cares about American citizens than one who doesn't give a flying rat's ass about anything except his own re-election)
(I also cannot believe he will get a single vote beyond his immediate family. Does nearly 50% of the nation really want to see the US to emulate Venezuela?)
YoungHegelian: Agreed that if it comes, it will come from a budding theological movement, perhaps Sunni. This too is a Western wish, and we'll see what grows.
Meanwhile, the rest of the world will go on.

"Shiloh's sensitive about deletions is all."
No, shiloh smiles at con hypocrisy of which this blog abounds!
Islamic terrorism is, at its most basic, this:
Moderate Muslims interact with the west.
Some have no problems.
Others are bothered by their conscience for partaking in all the sins offered by the free West: tempting women, alcohol, entertainments that distract from worship of Allah. They take up arms against the West, seeking absolution for their sins, and to destroy the temptations.
Still others are unable to resolve the theological conflict that arises from what their faith and heritage tell them: Islam is the only true religion, and Allah will bless the caliphate with riches, as proven by the past Islamic empire glories. They take up arms against the West so their religion is no longer insulted by the wealthy, free, happy infidels whose very wealth, freedom, and happiness are an insult to the truth of their faith.
In the 2nd and 3rd cases, they go back to Islamic nations where there are plenty of unemployed, undereducated young men. They organize these young men as the swords for their intent.
The leaders are western educated, radicalized by their inability to resolve the conflict of an infidel West more prosperous than devout Islamic nations.
The footsoldiers are ignorant savages whose hate and anger can be easily stoked to a high heat.
The 1st group cannot criticize the other groups, because Islam says that if a believer does the 5 Pillars, that believer cannot be a bad Muslim, even if he murders millions of innocents. They also fund terrorism, wittingly or unwittingly, as a display of piety.
The only non-violent, non-war solution I can see is to eliminate any connection, traffic, or communication between Islam and the rest of the world.
"Islam" means "submission"
Submission is in conflict with freedom.
There is no way to resolve the inherent conflict between Islam and freedom.
The moderate Muslims who live in the West are deliberately downplaying that conflict. But it pops up in things like honor killings...
Nathan Alexander:
I think Obama really believes he is a bridge-builder between two civilizations, and that he brings something 'special' to the table.
I actually believe the current liberal internationalist doctrine (Wilsonian, to say the least) is grounding him in Western tradition (like his economic team grounded him before many left, because he doesn't know all that much), and it is pretty far Left by American standards.
I suspect Obama just can't see America's military traditions very well, Westpoint, Jacksonian liberty, nor conservatism (bitter clingers) from where he sits.
This has been a change; a quite dramatic change.
Like most issues for me regarding Obama, he strikes me as someone further Left than I thought, quite different from many of America's traditions, and not necessarily capable of leading effectively.
No, shiloh smiles at con hypocrisy of which this blog abounds!
But we already established that there wasn't any. Showing up at someone's home dropping a deuce on the carpet is another matter and something that you engage in repeatedly. There is no mystery why Ann cleans up after you. The only mystery is why you keep on doing it.
@Nathan Alexander
"Moderate" Muslims in the West are only "moderate" in the same way US "Cafeteria Catholics" consider themselves to be "good Catholics" despite ignoring/rejecting most of the basic tenets of the Catholic religion, i.e., fooling themselves--the only way they can psychologically cope with attempting to reconcile the Church/the Prophet's teachings with secular modernity..
@virgil,
"Moderate" Muslims in the West are only "moderate" in the same way US "Cafeteria Catholics" consider themselves to be "good Catholics" despite ignoring/rejecting most of the basic tenets of the Catholic religion
I must disagree with this re Cathlocism. What in the Nicene Creed is incompatible with being a modern American?
Questions such as abortion, homosexuality, etc are questions of moral discipline, and are not what I would call "basic tenets", i.e. what's in the Nicene Creed.
Sadly, thanks to the constant social noise over matters of moral discipline & the absolutely awful job the Church does teaching doctrine, most Catholics, cafeteria & otherwise, have no understanding of the "basic tenets".
What really worries me is that the strength of the Salafists may come from the fact that there really isn't an established discourse of moderate Islam from within the faith itself.
YoungHegelian: From what I can tell, there isn't. Theologically speaking, radical Islamists hold all the high cards. The occasional Muslim who speaks of reforming Islam into a more tolerant religion ends up dead or with bodyguards.
Islam at its core is a violent supremacist religion. When the Prophet Muhummad is the "Perfect Man" and the "Perfect Man" personally oversaw the beheadings 400-800 Jewish males in a single day as well much other nasty stuff, you've got a religion that is irredeemably intolerant and bloodthirsty.
The only thing that has worked with Muslims, going all the way back to Muhammad, is to keep them weak and respectful. Then the gentler aspects of Islam surface so they can survive. Mind you, they are only waiting for a more strategic time to return to expansion by any means necessary.
Those are the choices. Keep them weak or let them run wild.
Yes they should. We don't want another Chris Stevens.
Get the hell out of Afghanistan too. The troops should not stay there as sitting ducks to be murdered by our "allies".
Four more years of shame and incompetence for a few food stamps and disability benefits? We have already fallen fast and furious in four stupid years. It's sickening.
"There is no mystery why Ann cleans up after you."
Actually, I've had very few posts deleted as mentioned previously, especially recently. In the beginning made fun of her asking for $$$ ad nauseam, but hey, I believe in free enterprise so those post deletions were only somewhat amusing. No biggie.
Also have mentioned re: free speech, Althouse is probably at the top of the list re: political blogs which is why I'm here.
The liberal blog I used to frequent as well as being boring, were total hypocrites re: free speech.
hmm, is this a negative or positive post ... mostly positive.
Again, if this blog didn't have a "few" liberals, what the hell would you talk about.
Amy Alkon ("The Advise Goddess") has the best take on this of all (and something I publicly stated years ago circa 2008@ Neptunus Lex blog) when she recently (9/15) stated: "The violence won't go away until the last Quran disappears from earth. The violence is built into the religion."
Virgil X: Agreed. Violence is built into the religion. Although, as I've noted, Islam also goes dormant when Muslims are weak.
The good news is that Islam is running out of oil and aging out of angry young men, so they are due to go dormant. The bad news is that WMD get cheaper and more accessible every year with technological creep.
A big reason I supported the War on Terror is that I felt it was the last chance to tame Islam before we were forced to turn much of the Islamic world to glass. See Richard Fernandez, "The Three Conjectures":
It is supremely ironic that the survival of the Islamic world should hinge on an American victory in the War on Terror, the last chance to prevent that terrible day in which all the decisions will have already been made for us. That effort really consists of two separate aspects: a campaign to destroy the locus of militant Islam and prevent their acquisition of WMDs; and an attempt to awaken the world to the urgency of the threat.
@creeley23,
I hope you're wrong, because the amount of blood that will have to shed if you're right is simply appalling, easily dwarfing WWII in its numbers. Remember, we are talking about 1.5 billion people, and if forced to choose, many will side with their faith against us in a life or death struggle.
I hope that the future is being worked through in places like Africa where the Christians are winning the war for hearts & souls slowly but surely. One reason the Christians are winning is because they are seen as a gateway to the advantages of the modern world.
Maybe Ann Coulter was right in how to handle the Islamists: "Kill their leaders & convert them to Christianity."

Whose blood? Considering the Arab world population is way beyond the ability of the water supplies of those countries to grow sufficient amounts of food it wouldn't be too difficult a task for the US Navy to mine their harbors and impose a blockade. No one else can or will take the Navy on in a fight our forces are the best in the world at winning. Six months to a year of a complete blockade and they will submit. Or die of starvation. The US was quite capable of doing this and did this in both world wars.
That's the whole deal, isn't it? Islamic jihadist Imams send these loons out to embarass or intimidate the countries' leaders to move away from any kind of moderation.
Obama and Hillary haven't figured it out. They think they can placate jihadists.
@CubanBob,
A starvation blockade kills combatants & non-combatants indiscriminately. We've done it in time of total war, and it may be necessary again.
But, who amongst these countries, short of a nuclear armed Iran or Pakistan, could declare a "total war" on the US? Are we going to starve millions of non-combatants over a dead ambassador & staffers?
I just don't understand what these countries could do short of a nuke via suitcase or missile that could make mass starvation a morally proportionate response.
In the insane and nutty world of Islam, if you don't agree with an iota of what the speakers says, even if it's unquarnic nor unhadithic, then you can just point a finger at them and call them blasphemers, infidels, collaborators, or whatever to justify blind rage mob murder. Yup, Islam, the religion that keeps on giving the world over a billion fucking sub-human lunatics that should be all thrown into the sun never to be seen again in the history of humanity.
If I had the power, I would commit religiocide on all of islam, muslims, the quaran and any vestige or history that it ever existed. And I'd willingly let history judge me for it because without this insane religion the world and it's future would be better off. truly.

(on my cell phone, I'm whispering "Hello, is this the FBI? I'd like to report.....")
YoungHegelian/
The concept of "moral proportionality" goes out the window in a fight for national survival in a "clash of civilizations" sense. IM(admittedly bloody)O the Curt LeMay dictum says it best: "How do you stop a war?" he once replied to just that question in front of a Presidential commission tasked with finding ways to end all-out nuclear war should one start: "Very simple. You kill as many people as you can as fast as you can until the other side can't take it any more--and then the war ends." Of course this was the 50s. Such tactics only work in a racially and culturally homogenized society--which this nation no longer is. We would unfortunately have to kill or imprison half the civilian population of places like Dearborn, Mich. etc., to make the "final solution" work. Not sure present-day American society is up to the awful task--even if it meant not doing so would mean either their own deaths ultimately or a life of Dhimmist servitude and servile degradation. "Better Red than Dead" is a philosophy all too well still alive in the hearts of many. Not too many willing to go the "Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death" route these days--to many games left on game-boy and X-Box to play--even if it means wearing a njab to "get by."
