"Christian girl accused of blasphemy in Pakistan is released on bail..."

"The girl, said to be 14, could be sentenced to life in prison if convicted...."
Pakistan’s interior minister, Rehman Malik, all but pronounced the girl innocent. He said the accused never left her home on the day three weeks ago when a young man claimed that he saw her carrying burnt pages of the Koran in a trash bag in her village outside Islamabad....

Last week, the imam of the neighborhood mosque was arrested after a witness accused him of mixing pages of a Koran into the bag of ashes that the girl carried. Christian residents said he planted the evidence as part of a campaign to get Christians to leave the community. Several hundred have fled since the girl’s arrest....

The imam who really defiled the Koran will have no consequences. The innocent girl will probably be killed. Boy, that religion of peace has all the fun. I'm so glad no one in the United States buys the religion of peace argument. It could really backfire.

Wouldn't someone motivated to burn a Koran burn it completely? Why do a partial job and leave evidence that neighbors might discover? Especially in a tinhorn thugocracy like Pakistan?

On another note...a key characteristic of the Salem witch trials was a law, impossible to implement objectively, that citizens used to lynch their enemies. Pakistan mixes that concept into industrial-strength form.

Hopefully, it's because you're not a gang or a cult, but sincere people who share a belief and nothing more.

Black people get killed all the time, and you don't see me getting freaked out about it.

A good friend of mine was in that city a week before this incident. It is a city of mostly Christians where they practice their faith openly and have for a very long time. They are in the process of finishing a fifty foot tall cross in the center of town. I saw pictures of it and it is almost complete but is still surrounded by scaffolding. They are also as a rule much more prosperous than the Muslims living in surrounding areas and there is a lot of jealousy because of that. So as is so often the case religious conflict masks deeper more complex conflicts.

Ha ha! Yet if a cultist somewhere kidnaps a kid, then all cults everywhere are kidnapping kids and we must DO something about it otherwise we are cult apologists.

Why the disconnect? Why do you not care about the black kids getting gunned down but you do get freaked out about a scientologist being mean to someone who isn't in scientology (though obviously not as close to as mean as islamics are to people who don't believe in Allah)

jr565 म्हणाले...

I would personally think that black kids getting killed in high numbers is a much more serious issue than cults, wouldn't you? Yet THAT you don't care about. But Mormons selling vitamins, why, we all need to be up in arms about that!

jr565 म्हणाले...

If you want to talk about religions/cults who go after people who try to leave teh religion, we shoudlnt' be having a coversation about Mormonism, or scientology but Islam. In that religion Apostasy is death! In more lenient countries apparently it's just imprisonment. Yet this girl, you don't care about. Talk about a double standard.

What city is it? It is not named in the article (which describes it, incidentally, as a "village," not a city).

I disagree. IMO the only thing that allows humans to live at the density we do is extrinsic motivators, of which religion is the most common and most effective.

That's a glimpse at the real war on women, isn't it?

The raping, beating, stoning and killing of Muslim women by Muslim men.

Too damn bad that American feminist women can't use their considerable political clout to aid their horribly oppressed sisters in Muslim countries, or who have moved to America with their families and are being brutalized here.

But of course, free bc pills are waaaaay more important than what is happening to Muslim women.

One wonders if the sean penns, the george clooney's, the vanessa redgraves, the kristen bells actually ever even think about this. And they reason they choose lessor evils to fight is that they are afraid. Bill Maher to his credit is not afraid, nor is Richard Dawkins. US military generals are. They would rather see our troops die than engage the root cause of fundamental muslim hate and 3rd world ignorance.

Well imo that is less serious an issue than aids, or the worldwide hate on jews. So if we were serious on focusing on just one problem, black kids getting killed wouldn't be it.

अनामित म्हणाले...

Not all of this is muslin ignorance and insensitivity. A lot of it is the 3rd world education people go through. In pakistan they are somewhat combined, but one wonder how they have nukes and the Iranians don't. There was a lot more civilization driving iran until the ayatollahs. maybe the cold war umbrella stifled them at that time.

No one seems to care outside the immediate family/gang, and the neighbors don't seem to mind living in a war zone. Then there are the hundreds of thousands of black babies aborted every year.

This fits right in with the pattern we see regarding "hate crimes" here in the US. Most of the time it is the "victim" group perpetrating a hoax.

Of course, in Pakistan Muslims are the majority but for some reason like to act like a persecuted minority.

the silence of American Muslims on the matter.

To be fair, there's very little American Muslims can do about it besides making targets of themselves and, judging from the intramural Sunni/Shi'ite and Shurist/Salafist violence, moderate Muslims are targeted by their own all the time.

they're all serious issues and you cant only address one at the expense of the other.

But this has more to do with cracks fixation on cults than anything else. Notice how he maintains his perspective on blacks dying but not on kids dying in cults. Not to say that such deaths aren't terrible, but really if YOU had to compare societal problems of kids kidnapped by cults or killed by homeopathy or whatever he is spewing how would that rate with kids dying in the inner city? To me the death of blacks is far more prevalent and serious than scientology, or OprahWinfrey or Vitamin stores or Mormonism or Tai Chi or whatever.
Crack can maintain his perspective about blacks dying, just not about cults (as defined by Crack) to the point where he's attacking straw men and bogeymen In his own mind rather than look at the big picture. The economy is a hell of a lot more important than whether anne Romney ever tried homeopathy or whatever he's on about.
I suppose I could say, my lack of outrage at the death of all the kids due to cult activity, is that like him and the blacks dying in society, I'm maintaining some perspective. And if we hasto compare the two social problems (cults as defined by crack) or inner city violence largely effecting blacks, the latter would win hands down. It's not an endorsement of cults (as defined by Crack) and all the evil they do. Only it's not as serious a problem. Not even close.

you shouldn't have to be black to make comments on black children, any more than you shold haw to be a Muslim woman to make comments on muslim women being jailed for blasphemy.if you stuck to your own standard you would remain mum on all things Mormon since you are in fact not a Mormon yourself (same goes with scientologupy, reiki, buddhis, karate, tai chi, new ageism or what have you).
However, I wasn't saying I know more about black kids dying than you. I was saying in my view it's a more prevalent social issue than anything occuring in most cults. And you can maintain perspective on blacks dying and not go crazy about it. I just wish you could maintain that same objectivity about all things cult, AND NOT FREAK OUT ABOUT IT.
Everything with cults with you is at level 10. They're all the Manson cult. Even things that I would have a hard time defining as cults. When my perspective would be, not every cult is the Manson cult. Yoga is not some nefarious thing thAt is brainwashing the masses into cutting pregnant people open and drinking arsenic laced kool aid. In 99.9% of cases the worst that will happen with a yoga practiciner is they waste money and put their body in weirdly named poses. But so what? And so wht if Anne Romney tried homeopathy to deal with her legitimate illness? That is nowhere near the issue of our economy being stuck in neutral for three years. Yet At nearly every post there you ae again digging into the weeds. Romney ain't a cultist (unless the definition being used is that religions are cults, in which case people like MLK are cultists).
