Different levels of involvement.
At tonight's Bob Dylan concert in Missoula. The man in the chair with the electronic device at another point in the concert implored a security guy to make the people in front sit down. He'd brought his chair, and so... so what?

Everybody sit the hell down, that's what.
Looks like a great venue -- I didn't hear about this one or I might have considered driving over -- I'm only about four hours from Missoula.
There's an outdoor music festival each August in nearby Sandpoint Idaho that's also a lot of fun. Great venue there as well -- large park sloping down to Lake Pend Oreille, mountains on both sides -- really striking.
Don't stand, don't stand, don't stand so close to me!
The poor guy brought a knife to a gun fight.
The Tired Boomer Generation.
Some day that guy will be coming with one of those walkers with the bike handbrakes - the kind of walker you can stop and sit on.
Let's see, he demands that authority force people to conform to his view of how people should watch a rock concert, rather than what one would expect from simple observation of typical human behavior at open-air events on the grass.
Treating people like blocks of wood, to be moved around at his pleasure; triumph of the will over reality.
Guess which party he belongs to.
That all looks very sad.
Oughta promulgate some concert attendance regs to keep the riff raff under control.
Yeah.
PS I don't get the whole thing of paying to go to a concert, then spending half the time or more fiddling with your electronic addiction device. That's just me, I like to listen.
What a great, intimate venue. I love smaller concerts like that.
Kit, I usually don't care for rock concerts in the daylight.
Pogo, are you gonna download the new Devo song "Don't Roof Rack Me, Bro! (Remember Seamus)" on August 25? Heh
Maybe.
Well, no.
I used to listen to them in the 80s. Cute comedy stuff.
People shouldn't do that after, say, age 30. Gets embarrassing.
Someone else built that chair!

Anyone seen Bo recently?
Bob Dylan Wrote Propaganda Songs.
"Bob Dylan Wrote Propaganda Songs."
... until he grew up and turned into a real artist.
"Sweetie,
It's not that I stopped listening to you, I just have a different level of involvement now."

Singing off-key isn't art.
Oh shut up.
Michael -
I dipute your assertion with two words: Tiny Tim.
The guy with the chair was only too pleased to be elevated above the people who failed to bring a chair.
That's a useful metaphor for politics. You provide for yourself and then...
Singing off-key isn't art.
And make no mistake, my friend
Your pointless life will end
But before you go
Can you look at the truth ?
You have a lovely singing voice
A lovely singing voice
And all of those
Who sing on-key
They stole the notion
From you and me
So, sing your life
Morrissey - "Sing Your Life"
Interesting you read that as a metaphor for conservatives, where I saw a fairly typical lefty.
The difference, I think, is the conservative would be fine thinking he'd brought his own chair, whether smug about it or not, but only the lefty would demand an authority to make everyone else sit down so he could use it.
A conservative would have guessed that everyone would likely stand at such a venue, and foregone a chair, save to sit somewhere on the side.
The conservative would say about this: "live and let live", while the lefty would make everyone sit down, and have the State buy the chairs.
Ann Althouse,

Damn it, woman, you took the words right out of my mouth,...
Bring everyone down to equal is definitely a lefty approach. Righties say stand on your own two feet, and if want to get even higher, grab your bootstraps.
This guy is the quintessential crab in the bucket leftie.

It depends on how you characterize the people who go to the front and stand. They could be the illegal immigrants who must be thrown out, or the welfare malingerers, or the criminal element.
Conservatives do advocate the use of power to stop certain types of behavior that others are doing for their own advantage -- often in the very places where lefties say live and let live.
Like crime?
Illegal immigration. Oh, that's crime, too.

And a little balance is restored. Respeck.
