On North Korean TV, "Tigger, Minnie Mouse and other Disney characters prancing in front of Kim Jong-un and an entourage of clapping generals."

"The footage also showed the boyish-faced leader in a black Mao suit watching as Mickey Mouse conducted a group of young women playing violins in skimpy black dresses."
At times, scenes from the animated Disney movies “Dumbo” and “Snow White” were projected on a large, multipanel screen behind the entertainers; an article in the state-run press said unnamed foreign songs were on the bill.
This makes me feel hopeful!

Megacorporation vs. Megalomaniac!

You think the Nork gov't is nasty towards Americans now, just wait until Disney's lawyers get through with them for the unauthorized use of their IP.

I know the McDonald's rule of foreign policy:

No 2 nations with McDonald's franchises in both have ever gone to war.

Now is there a Mickey Mouse rule of foreign policy?

Huh? HE IS OUT OF HIS GOURD and Kim might do something really really stupid (or his minions.)

No, this Micky Mouse stuff is not cute.. it's the sign of a nutjob. He is projecting.

YoungHegelian म्हणाले...

I guess Kim went with Disney characters rather than Loonie Tunes characters because that just hits too close to home.

RazorSharpSundries म्हणाले...

No lifesize South Park characters available? Now that would give me hope.

Why does this make you feel hopeful?

Remember, NK has been participating in the Olympics for about a decade, as well as World Cup soccer. It hasn't opened up NK to the outside, even though those events actually involve NKoreans leaving their country.
The Kims have always had access to goodies outside the country. Kim Jong Il had a chef who used to fly to Tokyo if he needed the right kind of sushi rice. He imported liquor for himself.
This was just Kim Jong-un amusing himself. He didn't bring in the Disney corporation to do this. He stole their IP and presented it to his cloistered nation, in his own honor. The people who saw it will only know about it what they let him know.
The people who performed in it probably practiced 18 hours a day for a year, with very little food and fear of messing up.

He so ronery.

This and half his country's people are starving. His father redirected most of the military budget-which includes food for soldiers- to his missile and nuclear bomb projects.
One observer pointed out that there was a real danger of the NK army invading the south just to get something to eat. Fully half of NKs conventional war fighting equipment is in disrepair. When NK falls it will be very, very bloody.

"North Korea’s untested young leader has tried once again to take a dramatic step with his isolated, impoverished nation, this time with a bit of unapproved help from Mickey Mouse and Winnie the Pooh."

It's not that the nation is impoverished. It's that the nation is a totalitarian dictatorship (aka a Democrat's wet dream) which is why it's impoverished. Fucking New York Times assholes.

Tarzan म्हणाले...

Makes me think of that Twilight Zone episode with a young Billy Mummy who inflicts his wishes (which are always granted) on all who would displease him.

"I WANT DANCING GIRLS! AND MICKEY MOUSE! ON A BIG STAGE WITH...LOTS OF LIGHTS!"

"Uhhh...yes Johnny! Why of course. That's exactly what we'll do! C'mon everyone, let's...uhhh..get the show going!"

Nothing more terrifying than an infantile dictator.

Ann, do you just say this stuff to incite a reaction? I'm curious because I'm wondering what you are hopeful for from this regime or this leader.

Geoff Matthews म्हणाले...

You know who else liked Mickey Mouse?
Hitler.
The only way he can indulge in these things is by suppressing his people.
There is no hope for North Korea.

AaronS म्हणाले...

A quick read of "Escape from Camp 14" will erase any hope for North Korea.
