No Slumdog Millionaire there!

I realize this makes me a gigantic nerd, but when I heard the title I was like "a documentary about the number pi? Cool!".

But it is just some movie about a boy and a tiger? Feh.

So is it a possible children's movie, or does it allude to the human characters the animals represent?

MadisonMan म्हणाले...

Why doesn't it open on March 14th?

You take a hit like Titanic and you pair it with a flop like Cast Away and you have Life of Pi?

It looks like a remake of Cast Away but the hope is that the Titanic will work its magic one more time.

The Life of Hair-Pi would be much more interesting :-)

Stake and BJ day?

I had no idea.

I enjoyed the book to a point but I got a little worn out stretching reality.

There is no way that any Ang Lee product can be anything short of totally excellent. But those who don't go ahead of time to ingest this incredible piece of prose by Yann Martel are surely cheating themselves. The book is a creative masterpiece of modern fiction. (And that word "incredible" can be taken in a literal sense as well...)

Life of Pi used a tiger because the lion from Narnia died... again.. for real this time.

I love mathematical adventures.

I loved loved loved that book. The movie in my head is perfect. I'm almost afraid to go have it messed up by a filmmaker.

I wonder if the movie will be true to the book's ethos, that nature is wild and cruel, and beautiful. It's not warm and fuzzy at all. Ask the zebra.

Ang Lee directed The Ice Storm and Brokeback Mountain. My New Age lefty friends loved Life of Pi.

And wiki informs me:

"In a letter directly to Martel [author of Life of Pi], Barack Obama described Life of Pi as 'an elegant proof of God, and the power of storytelling'."

Maybe the book and the movie are good, even Grrrrreat!, but I'm going to need some serious word of mouth from people I trust before I bother.

That question doesn't fit the situation at all.

It would be great for children, though, I think, because it's about a boy and survival.

There are many deep themes about religion and philosophy that are more of interest to adults than to children.

I guess I need to read it again, because I did about five years ago and was entirely underwhelmed.

Ack! I almost bought the book on the Professor's recommendation, but I consulted my wife, who reads everything there is, and she told me "you would hate it". Saved, just barely!

I've seen the book at the bookstore several times, picked it up, read the fly cover and put it back down. Not my cup of tea. If I do ever buy it, it will be at a used book store for 50 cents.

And I don't want no kindle, or e-book. I want a real book. One that I can feel the texture of the paper, and smell the mustiness if it hasn't been read in a while. And I don't have to worry about dropping it, or geting it wet, or sitting on it.

Ps

I buy almost all my books used. It's the only way to go. (yea I'm a penny pinchin' bastard. What's it to ya?)

Can you imagine how thrilled I was to get a 1st American edition at a used book sale? $1. I love the book. A boy and a tiger?? Excuse me, we are all living the life of Pi and overcoming obstacles. Read it, absorb it, it's great.
