Best Cities for Young Adults: #1 Madison, Wisconsin.

From Kiplinger.
Madison is an educated, tech-savvy city, filled with recent grads who have enough energy to launch a dozen start-ups and still have time to check out that brewpub down the block.

With the University of Wisconsin's flagship campus front and center, there's no shortage of smart people in town. Engineers, computer programmers and other eggheads work in academia or for Epic Systems, a health care software developer. An entrepreneurial community fosters homegrown start-ups.

How do they define young? How about Young Emeritus?

Scott Walker is young.

chickelit म्हणाले...

Too bad Madison didn't make Kiplinger's cut for Best Cities For Families.

Des Moines: What do you think of Kiplinger?

Madison: We're against Kipling and breeders too.

And there's chanting. Don't forget the chanting. The Madison bird's song is intoxicating and simply lovely plumage.

Well! This is great news for my daughter and her fiancé, wedding in September! Her fiancé is part owner of one of those startups, and it's already grown in the last two years, good news. My daughter is an attorney, something which Madison has plenty of, I suspect.

No shortage of smart people?

Didn't Madison vote for recall?

garage mahal म्हणाले...

Eat it wingers. Madison rules. This city has a pulse. You live in a shithole.

MadisonMan म्हणाले...

@AllieOop, I hope the wedding weekend weather is warm and inviting!

But Noodles is still a dictatorship!

अनामित म्हणाले...

MM, I hope it rains a few more times before then to green up the grass, thanks!

Had an uncle who lived in Madison all his adult life.

40 years ago he told me that Madison had the highest percentage of cab drivers with PhDs in the nation.

I have a feeling this is still true.

Shush.
The adults are talking.

And swearing is a sign of an attention whore but then you knew that already, didn't you?

Kiplingers should have published that comment to demonstrate the true charm of Madison residents.

अनामित म्हणाले...

Garage, I find you quite charming. Madison, the city they wished they lived in, but are afraid to admit it. ;)

bagoh20 म्हणाले...

"Eat it wingers. Madison rules. This city has a pulse. You live in a shithole."

We'll talk in January.

bagoh20 म्हणाले...

You know how they say animals can sense an impending earthquake? Well, I say bullshit, but I can do it.

Last night we had a 3.7 Richter quake and the epicenter was directly under my house. The thing is that it was just after 3am, and for some reason I woke up just about 1 minute before it hit. I rarely wake up at that time. That's when I'm dead to the world.

It shook the house for about 2 seconds pretty hard, but didn't knock anything over, and it was not noticed very far away. My five dogs all jumped up and started running around barking, but not until after it happened.

I think I need to be studied as a quake psychic. It might be related the probing I received from the aliens last Valentines Day. They told me - with the little squeaks like they do - that I would be very sensitive afterward, but I din't think they meant this. Anyway, it's a gift.

अनामित म्हणाले...

Ah Bagoh, what kind of probing? Maybe you were gifted with an implant, a nano seismograph perhaps.

bagoh20 म्हणाले...

There was nothing nano about it, but they did keep saying "nanoo, nanoo".

अनामित म्हणाले...

Live well and prosper, fitting for a capitalist!

heyboom म्हणाले...

@bagoh

I'm not too far from you. My daughter said she woke up right before the quake as well.

Alex म्हणाले...

Uh oh garage shat all over the thread again. Clean up in aisle 10!

Alex म्हणाले...

Allie - is it a high tech startup?

bagoh20 म्हणाले...

So it must have something to do with sleeping in women's underwear.

Oops. Ignore that.

अनामित म्हणाले...

Alex, no its not in a tech related field at all, but it depends on it to function.

heyboom म्हणाले...

bagoh

I've been mostly a lurker at Althouse for a while now, but I have to say that you're one of my favorites here. Astute, creative and downright funny.

bagoh20 म्हणाले...

That's very kind, Heyboom, but I'm also a stupid-racist-anti-intellectual- braggadocio-hillbilly-wingnut with a woman's liver, a titanium rib-cage, and no sense of style or appreciation of art. A real hot mess, and a registered Democrat. A junkyard collage lying in a heap on the slab of a double wide, and I shine a little in the sun.

This article is silly. Madison is a great place to live if you're from the Midwest. Really, it is. But, for those of thus who come from civilization (read: either coast), it's difficult to remain in this town for longer than a few years. Most of my friends share the same view I do.

Madison is small, very slow, and has zero diversity. There are lots of places to eat, but as for "ethnic" food, nothing that really stands out (except for the superb/dumpy/hidden Asian One).

My problem is htat you can do pretty much all there is to do in the first year or two you live here. It's a beautiful place, but I outgrew it pretty quickly. One more year!

In the words of Bob Dylan (just for you, Ann): I'm going back to New York City, I do believe I've had enough.

Robert Cook म्हणाले...

"Madison is an educated, tech-savvy city, filled with recent grads who have enough energy to launch a dozen start-ups and still have time to check out that brewpub down the block."

Standard issue life-style porn/PR. They're pandering to the affluent poseur/hipsters who wish to imagine themselves as hip entrepreneurs who work hard all day in their self-created jobs as nascent Steve Jobs-es and chill with their crew in the "brewpub" all night.

As if.

Living there off and on over the last 15 years, the second I arrived I couldn't wait to leave. Not as smart or hip as it thinks it is...which gets very tiring. And "passive aggressive" is a way of life.

I do miss Odana..a great public golf course.

so the best city has the lowest percentage of minorities. nice.

Um, you don't live in Madison.

Guildofcannonballs म्हणाले...

A sunny "day" in Madison, from September through March, is the sun visible through the clouds for ten or fifteen minutes.

The humidity sucks in the summer.

The cold sucks in the winter.

Seasonal Affective Disorder is real.

अनामित म्हणाले...

That would be from October through April, get it right. Fall is glorious in Wisconsin.

garage mahal म्हणाले...

Um, you don't live in Madison.

LOL!

CWJ म्हणाले...

What Robert Cook said.

I Have Misplaced My Pants म्हणाले...

Frankly, I will not be steering my kids toward any place that is marketed as "great for young people." I want them to grow up and turn into responsible, productive, sober adults, not people acting and thinking like teenagers at 30. Creating, not consuming.

TosaGuy म्हणाले...

And when they have kids they will flee Madison for Sun Prairie or some other satellite city.
