Althouse always keeps a sharp eye on everything, especially mittens!

We have a Coopers Hawk in my neighborhood. Keeps the squirrels and smaller birds on their toes.

That's a falcon.

Milton will take HI, MS, and Samoa, and get at least a third of the AL delegates.

He's doing just fine.

Which drives bathtub swabbie and the rest of the Kos Kidz insane.

PS The hawk better watch it. He goes near any of the pups, The Blonde will acquaint him with the fact he's a lot more endangered than he knows.

Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away contraception..

@Madison Man: That Falcon was the "Poor Man's Thunderbird."

And yet they are provided for.

@Rusty

The image is a little grainy, but wouldn't a falcon have dark markings around the eye? It looks more like a Cooper's hawk or Sharp-shinned hawk.

It's a government drone, watching teh Althouse.

Hawk food.

It's not as bulky as a hawk and its tail when roosting is narrower than a hawks. A coopers hawk has more grey and is mottled on the breast this bird is tawny like a Perigine or a sparrow hawk. Size is hard to tell by the picture.

Methinks you're going to get a wild late-March/early April snowstorm. The winter up there has been too good so far, there has to be payback.

MadisonMan म्हणाले...

@Emil, the next two weeks look just Jim-Dandy in WI as far as the forecast models are concerned.

My daughter and I rescued a crow in our yard last Saturday, and brought it to a wildlife rescue place off Rimrock. It did a near perfect "play dead" impersonation when I went over and picked it up, complete with a total neck sagging act.

We called the rescue center back a day later to check up on it, and they said it had a broken leg. Not sure why it wouldn't/couldn't fly away. I asked them if I could pick it up, as I was thinking about making a pet out of it. They said no dice.

The mine bill will pass in a special session of the state legislature.

The Dems are being hammered by the private sector labor unions who are threatening to have their members vote for Walker in the recall.

Jauch will be given a pass by his party to vote for the bill.

You heard it here first.

@Garage: Have you ever seen an elephant fly like the way Romney has taken off? link

I guess all that "knocked on his heels" stuff just meant he was playing "Rope-a-dope-hope" in the ring?

What does this have to do with my incredible and heartwarming crow rescue story?

Michelle Dulak Thomson म्हणाले...

Yes, that is a falcon. Not a hawk. Look at the tail.

I wonder what you have there, though? Prairie falcon? It looks too big to be a merlin.

wv: Twersh iationsp. That's one seriously twisted relationship.

I don't know why it is so incredible for people to believe that someone would want to doctor/fake a birth certificate.

Hey, it's not out fault. Drudge says the Danes have concluded that global warming and CO2 are what is making us fat.

Would you like fries with that Bratwurst?

David म्हणाले...

The California Angels worst nightmare, Lem.

We have a new expert here. First the logging road and now the falcon. Rusty is our resident Wisconsin woodsman.

Obama says the Afgan massacre this week and the My Lai killings are not comparable.

I think they were to the villagers involved.

(I understand his point but why does he feel the need to say it that way?)

This is the end of my adult activities for the day.

Don't think for a minute that you can sell yourself as a concerned, sensitive father type. You're a hardened, cynical man afflicted with WDS.

O', I can do both. Like a light switch! I/O I/O

I do it for my chillen.

Paul म्हणाले...

If this photo was all I had to go on I would list this bird as a hawk in the bird-hunting genus Accipiter -- either an adult Cooper's or Sharp-shinned Hawk.

Both are slight in comparison to their more bruising, rodent-wrestling cousins in genus Buteo (e.g. the common Red-tailed and Red-shouldered Hawks of North America).

Among falcons, only a female Kestrel or male Merlin could display the russet I'm seeing on the breast or this raptor. But facial markings would be obvious on a Kestrel (aka Sparrow Hawk)in this posture. I'd eliminate Merlin (aka Pigeon Hawk) based a lack of dark breast streaking over the russet background, and on the pure white vent and undertail coverts. A Merlin of the Northern Great Plains might show pure white there, but would also be a much paler bird overall.

Finally, there's a general impression of head shape and bill length that is un-falconlike.
