At the Spring Primary Café...

... cast your vote.

Talk about anything you want, but this was what it looked like at our polling place... on the first day where the new Wisconsin voter I.D. applied:
Election officials reported no problems enforcing the new law....

With April's elections are expected to be much bigger, especially with a presidential primary on the ballot, Tuesday's sparse ballot provided local officials a more relaxed rollout to the new law requiring all voters show a photo ID before getting a ballot.
I enjoyed showing my I.D. for the first time, and I took the opportunity to ask the poll workers if there had been any I.D.-related troubles. I was told that there was one woman who'd forgotten her I.D., but she cast a provisional ballot, which will become official when she comes back with her I.D.

Provisional ballots are rendered legal after Friday as I understand it, further complicating close races that might have been called earlier.
School board races can hinge on just a few votes.

I'm sure the SEIU crowd was sobbing hysterically.

Perhaps more so after Rasmussen reveals both Milton and Santorum are within 2 of GodZero.

Looks like nobody bought those unemployment figures, after all.

"With April's elections"

How many elections does Wisconsin have in a year? What a waste of money.

I'm given to understand that cafés often have musical entertainment--Phoebe at Central Perk, and so on. In that spirit (literally; I may be as bad a singer as Phoebe!) I have some musical entertainment to offer. This is a song by Johnny Coppin, a folk singer from my home county, and since I had a couple of long weekends in a row, I thought I'd take a shot at recording it. I'm not a singer, not by a long shot, but I think it turned out okay and I hope y'all will enjoy it over coffee and cake at the café.

You and we both know Republicans used mind control on that poor woman who'd "forgotten" her I.D.

That's right - Republican Jim Crow mind controllers - trying to disenfranchise her.

Chuck66 म्हणाले...

I really don't think an ID is neccesary, but also have not problem with the law.

It is interesting how the anti-ID people are trying to find rare examples of a situation where an ID does not work.

So after 49 years of not needing my id to vote, I produced one today because of the eleven potentially improper ballots out of 3 million that Van Hollen has found and which caused all this consternation and need to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars for student ids etc...

I saw the PBS documentary about the Clinton Presidency. It's a good thing to belong to the party of journalists, historians, and PBS producers. Clinton's Presidency was presented as an inspiring story of his struggle, redemption and eventual triumph over the dark forces of American life as personified by Ken Starr, Timothy McVeigh, and Newt Gingrich.

Back in the day you didn't need a driver's license to drive either, and grumpy old men grumped about that once it was required.

My wife and I moved from Illinois to Wisconsin. A few years later a poll-worker friend of hers spotted a woman trying to vote with her name. Challenged, the woman fled. Since nobody was caught or convicted, this obviously never happened and cannot be evidence for the utility of voter ID.
Of course that was in Cook County, and we know that nothing like that can ever happen in Wisconsin.

Jane म्हणाले...

Oh - wonderful news! I didn't know this.

We like to show our IDs in Virginia, too.

Shearing sheep was an unexpected activity today, and I totally forgot about voting. So thank you Rusty, for casting a ballot for me with one of your extra votes.

I'd never heard of Old Wives' Day or Rose Monday in connection with Mardi Gras, but apparently the German parade is used for political satire too.

And I can't handle the wv blob, so in case the link doesn't work:

There will be a lot of racial grandstanding in Milwaukee during the April voting. Followed by the inevitable "I told you so."

Self-fulfilling.

Darrell म्हणाले...

Is this going to stop all the Illinois students who attend college in Wisconsin from voting in Illinois first, then driving back to their campuses in Wisconsin to vote again? Or from voting multiple times in Wisconsin because the student election judges don't give a damn if you take another ballot as long as you do it one at a time? I've been hearing those stories for years, including the 10 votes each cast for Al Gore--stopping only because they all got bored.

David Brock reminds me of a friend. They look alike and they're both fierce.

I noticed the photo of Brock appearing on a number of right wing nut sites. Sorry for saying nut but the same photo appears repeatedly and that's nutty. Or obsessed. It almost looks coordinated but I suspect it is not. I'm not even giving credit for coordination. Because I too could not resist the photo and I certainly am not coordinated. It was terrible the way the spirit of the despicable Marquis de Sade Tyre intruded upon my quiescence and delivered a politely phrased but nonetheless compelling and commanding instruction that left no room for refusal,

"Dramatique hamsterize la photo."

And I'm all, "What?"

And he goes, ''

"Vous savez ce qui est prévu."

And it's like the twirly hypnotize things on my eyeballs. So fine. Here's Brock dramatic hamsterized.

Garage,

I can't use my Veterans ID Card to buy alcohol either....or for anything else other than checking into the VA and I use my drivers license for that since carrying one ID that is good for everything is much convenient.

Again, this veteran is just so choked up with gratitude about the sudden concern people like Garage have for us. It feels so genuine that it simply can't be any sort of partisan maneuvering. I am sure that Garage will back us veterans on every one of our issues from now on.

Simon म्हणाले...

There's a very strong case for Congress to take a hard look at the VRA from the standpoint of real need: What challenges to voting exist today, rather than what challenges existed in the 1960s. The voting rights and voting fraud challenges today seem to have much more to do with Chicago and the Southwest than the old confederacy.

Reform it before the Supreme Court strikes it down.

The GAB FAQ discusses "military" and "veterans" IDs.

A vets ID is a laminated card with a picture and a name. It has no SSN, B-day, signature, expiration date, anti-tampering elements or anything else that separates it from a Sams Club card.

TosaGuy म्हणाले...

From the VA website about the Veterans ID Card (VIC):

"The only purpose of the card is for identification and check-in at VA appointments."

A V.A. ID card is not valid, secure ID.

It is not a valid ID when it comes to citizenship.

It is also very easy to fake that card, but if you are not in the system the fake card won't work.

It is meant as ID to validate entitlement to V.A. services and is not meant to validate citizenship. I know some non-citizens soldiers who have V.A benefits but not citizenship.

That old asshole needs to dig out his drivers licence or his State ID card and to quit acting like a fucking shitbird smartass.

Garage needs to quit acting the Drama Queen over this issue.
