"Steven Tyler Sings/Screeches/Murders The National Anthem."

"The Aerosmith frontman, who also twilights as a judge on the hit show American Idol, has certainly seen better days. You have to believe that if 'judge' Steven Tyler saw 'singer' Steven Tyler perform this poorly he probably wouldn’t put him through to 'Hollywood week.'"

Yeah, that was putrid.

(Feel free to talk about the Ravens and the Patriots, going on now, and about "American Idol," which started a new season this week.)

Isn't Tyler the one who looks worse than Keith Richards even though he's still alive?

Horrible rendition of the National Anthem. Idle musicians on drugs. That's Boston for you -- America's past.

He ain't owning it, but he kept his hands off his crotch, and didn't spit on the ground.

This is a fine example of what happens when a talented artist quits using drugs.

It wasn't as bad as these things usually are. Some people in the crowd were singing along; usually that's not even possible.

I'm with Zrimsek - I thought it was better than usual. It was not only respectful, but mostly competent. The only real problems were on the high notes, where Tyler did what he always does with high notes. And - again, agreeing with Zrimsek - as an anthem, it should be sung in such a way that others can join in, which it was.

I remember from last year's NFL playoffs that the best renditions were by country groups.

You know I didn't hear the introduction--so didn't know who the singer was.

When they finallycut to the singer (who had been mangling the National Anthem so terribly that the fans were booing[Who knew so many EehGulls fans had tickets for the game] I couldn't figure out who it was. It looked like the Patriots had gone down to Skid Row and recruited a bag lady for the singing gig.

No, it wasn't the best rendition.

Interesting/curious/disturbing how the sports networks continue to lionize Ray Lewis.

CBS sabotages American Idol premiere by letting Steve Tyler sing

Isn't the term moonlights, not "twilights"?

Sounds like the writer is trying to push Tyler into retirement.

That said, I thought the screeching was the best part. Tyler never had voice that made him a versatile singer. But his idiosyncratic voice is the instrument that makes Aerosmith work.

And, true, around Boston we tend to pick up aurally on the familiar, whether it's ignoring Steven Tyler's flat notes or hearing the letter "Rs" at the end of words that just ain't there.

Why is the national anthem sung in the first place?

It's the curse of ball games.

Traditions are only traditions if they're both imposed and chosen.

Who the hell is choosing it?

अनामित म्हणाले...

I hit the remote after the first few notes and then waited a couple of minutes before tuning back in.
Ghastly.

"Why is the national anthem sung in the first place?"

Because if the National Anthem isn't sung, it means we hate America!

Roman म्हणाले...

That guy?, once upon a time may have been a singer, but he surely is not now. If you can't say anything nice about someone, you shouldn't say anything...

Steven म्हणाले...

Chenowith was worse, despite the clearly superior voice. Someone should get her a metronome.

Yeah, my brother, a Pats fan, just texted me that Ray Lewis just stabbed Lee Evans and Billy Cundiff.

Titus म्हणाले...

I didn't think it was that bad.

The Pats are going to the Super Bowl for the 7th time and they played like shit.

Beldar म्हणाले...

I don't much like either the Ravens or the Pats, but since I dislike the Ravens more I'm glad they lost. (The Ravens do have some amazing athletes, though.)

Known Unknown म्हणाले...

The Patriots really "held" on to win.

Beldar म्हणाले...

As for the National Anthem: Don't blame Tyler, for he was probably about as good as he's capable of being in an a cappella performance.

Blame, rather, whatever NFL or TV network putz chosen him. That person should be fired and shunned.

Toad Trend म्हणाले...

Well, better than Yoko Ono I guess.

Meh, I've heard worse. He got the words right; better than most.

Where was PETA at to intervene? I know he must have crushed at least three or four cats to make all that noise.

I don't quite understand the negative reactions to Mr. Tyler's rendition of the anthem. He sounded exactly like Steve Tyler has always sounded. He's a rock singer, and not an acapella crooner. What were people expecting?

अनामित म्हणाले...

Wasn't that bad. He hit all the notes and refrained from yoddling. Raspy, but what do expect from a 70 year old man?

Amartel म्हणाले...

Steven Tyler sung it like a rock star. Kristin Chenoweth sung it like a broadway singer. No surprises. Who's singing it at the Super Bowl? Please, not Madonna. Pleasepleaseplease.
