A midday outing on New Year's.

Kind of gloomy. But the worst of it was the ice. Hard to walk at all.

Wait. You are not at home (or at a nice pub) watching the Packers play?

Turn in your cheeseheads.

caplight45 म्हणाले...

Isn't winter in Wisconsin generally gloomy?

Ann Althouse म्हणाले...

We're home now. Watching the Packers. The pics are from just a couple miles from here.

Ann Althouse म्हणाले...

@caplight. It gets dark early, but the days tend to be sunny. And a white covering helps.

Lem Vibe Bandit म्हणाले...

Was there music blaring from the car?

That car must have a good sound system.

Ann Althouse म्हणाले...

It has. A great sound system, but we rarely play it loud and we usually have it off. We like to talk!

Jordy Nelson is playing out of his damn mind this year. Man among boys.

A Thousand Beautiful Things

Something nice to play next time.

It's never gloomy with a dog outing.

It's 78 deg. and sunny, just freaking perfect here. Sorry guys.

Today my sister is getting her kid back after a second judge agreed with her request.

We are having a family reunion (those in the area)

Looking like that where we are, too.

And, yes, be very careful on the ice.

You don't bounce the way you used to.

While I haven't read any definitive statements on the topic, based on the snow cover map at Intellicast.com today quite possibly sets a record for the New Year's Day with the least amount of snow cover nationwide.

@Ironrailsironweights:
That's not the kind of cover you're normally concerned about.

Meade is a good listener ;)

Overcast and about 45 here with colder stuff on the way. No ice, but a bit of drippy rain.

Very mild winter here in WNY, so far. The snowblower hasn't been needed once. Glad I decided to forego the ice rink this year...

Here in Salem (OR), "freezing fog" is a term of art -- you get that a lot, foggy mornings with just the barest layer of condensation over all paved surfaces, such that an incredibly thin film freezes on (or, worse, is momentarily melted by every car, then partially freezes again, so that you have a thin film of water on top of a thin layer of ice). Throw in the hills, at least where I am, and walking anywhere in the early morning involves baby steps, shoes with hefty treads, and a good flashlight.

I mean, when I was growing up in NY, we had surfaces at least equally treacherous, but you could generally see them before you stepped on them. This stuff is essentially invisible. It's not cold enough for it right now, but just you wait.

Tomorrow is intergenerational rooting rivalry day for my family: My parents are both UW/Madison grads, whereas it's difficult to live in Salem (and especially to teach in Corvallis, as my husband does) without following the Ducks.

Who I confidently expect to stomp all over the Badgers with their big old webbed feet, with exactly the same confidence Michele Bachmann and Ron Paul displayed about their Iowa prospects this morning on This Week. IOW, that's what you have to say ;-)

It's raining here.
When we had a rash of ice storms in the 90's, I hammered some carpet tacks into the bottom of some old, thick-soled shoes. Worked great, but couldn't wear them indoors.
