The incident — in which the "Culver's Five" were arrested — occurred back in 2010 when concealed carry was still illegal, but open carry was not. The charges for "obstructing justice" were dropped and the men filed a lawsuit, which is now dropped.
Culver's, in case you don't know, is this:

That's a shame.
The five should have insisted on a lot more.
OMG! And nobody died?!
All those guns and not one of them up and killed someone?!
Wisconsin is on the edge of anarchy!
"Culvers is this"
You forgot ridiculously overpriced.
One is given hope that there yet remains a small shred of sanity when the US Constitution is actually acknowledged as relevant by a US court.
Gotta love the guys that do this. More stones than I have...
"The settlement is at a moderately modest level."
Good thing they settled.
Posting that photo of a Butter Burger this early in the morning is pure torture.
"The settlement is at a moderately modest level."
How do you know these cowboys weren't wryly referring to the town in question? Which, of course, begs the question...do cowboys wryly refer to anything or do they toe the line at droll?
The city settled the case without admitting wrong-doing.
The bureaucracy hides its faceless in shame.
ridiculously overpriced
Yeah, you can spend $6 if you're not careful!
Cheap bastard! Better not ask what all those folks here are paying for the gourmet treats thy are always crowing about. Your heart couldn't take it.

I would love to be able to get a meal a Culvers for $6. I take the family there every once and a while as our church, just down the street, has a scrip deal worked out with them for 10% of the recipes the third Monday night of each month. I don't think we've ever spent less than $40 for a family of 5 (with 3 small children). Regardless, the quality of the food isn't any better than McDonald's or Wendy's where we are.
I like the place well enough, but don't see the reason for the more expensive food.
I disappointed in you, Ann. Culver's is not the burgers and fries. Culver's is the best frozen custard of any chain!
Nice way to make a living.
We are making progress! A second amendment win in Wisconsin? Hell just froze over the progressives in Madison who now have something more to worry about.

Micky D's ain't got no stinkin' frozen custard. This is THE reason to stop by Culver's.
I was a bit stunned to find out there are several locations here in Phoenix. I din't realize the place was that infested with Youpers.

Techinically speaking, McDonald's doesn't even have ice cream. The point is well made though. The custard is pretty good, but this is St Louis. We have Ted Drewes here.
You forgot ridiculously overpriced.
Not at all -- if you order correctly, it's actually cheaper than McDonald's. And a hell of a lot better.
Gotta love the guys that do this. More stones than I have...
[sarcasm]Don't you know, people who carry guns are compensating for small dicks?[/sarcasm]
I've (legally) carried a pistol concealed many times in the past 5 years, and I admit it takes balls to carry openly. Even where legal.
Because carrying a firearm isn't common.
And I'd have to explain that if I was expecting trouble, I'd be carrying something bigger than a pistol...
Anybody who overcooks their onion rings like that SHOULD be afraid of an armed populace...
Onion rings?

Best/most funny comment I've read this morning.
Are those cheese curds?!!!!!

And greasy and over cooked as well. I have one down the street from my home and quit eating there about a month after I moved there. I enjoy a good burger and if Culvers ever decides to start making them, I might go back.
The custard was pretty good (especially the pumpkin pie) but it’s not that much better than the Blizzard I can get at the Dairy Queen down the road.
Heartburn for a week.
But, yeah, 10 grand is peanuts. I guess all the lawyers Althouse trains go to LA or Gotham.
This award might actually have done some good if the cops and the chief had to pay all or some it themselves instead of the insurance company.
I love Culvers and wish we had them in NC!
I agree with "mariner" - they should have settled for more.
"You forgot ridiculously overpriced."
A cooked to order cheddar burger with a small fries and a soda for less than four dollars.
If you really want to treat yourself and a date, you can even eat it inside.
Ohhh, I'm going to Culver's for lunch. That looks great!
This post cracks me up because every time we go to Culver's for lunch, there are always police there eating, too, and of course they're all armed. I'm sure the majority of the clientele enjoys the security of knowing that Culver's has pretty much round-the-clock security has a result.
Northof101 -- the one at Baseline & Country Club is very, very good. I've heard mixed reviews of the others. $40 for a family of 5 with 3 kids is more than we manage to spend, and two (!!!) of mine are teenagers.
Recently we've seen an influx of Freddie's Steakburgers, which also have frozen custard -- they pale in comparison to Culvers, and their prices are much higher. (They do have better fries, though.)
Culvers is this
From the looks of things Culvers is some kind of performance art troupe.
Madison got off remarkably cheap. Evidently the Five were out to make a point rather than a buck. (coulda been megabucks in the right venue)
Evidently the Five were out to make a point rather than a buck.
My recollection is that at least one of them did the same thing in -- Racine? Kenosha? -- and got paid off for it there too.
I suspect both reasons were in play.
"My recollection is that at least one of them did the same thing in -- Racine? Kenosha? -- and got paid off for it there too."
Apparently, the police are slow learners.
karrde: And [ if I was open carrying ] I'd have to explain that if I was expecting trouble, I'd be carrying something bigger than a pistol...
Indeed; I like the analogy of a handgun to a small first aid kit you can carry everywhere. Like the first aid kit, its role is to cover things until they can be done properly, either until you get to an appropriate long gun or until the EMTs show up or the like. But seldom your first choice except that it can always be available.
Very much like how cops kept their shotguns in the trunk and nowadays a lot are transitioning to the more versatile "patrol carbine", generally an AR-15 variant or the like.
$10,000 will buy a lots of ammo.
Thanks for the extra ammo, City of Madison.
"I disappointed in you, Ann. Culver's is not the burgers and fries. Culver's is the best frozen custard of any chain!"
We like Michael's.
Ummm... Ann? Where's the frozen custard in that picture?
While Kopp's (Milwaukee area) is better frozen custard, here in Indiana, I have to rely on Culver's for my frozen custard fix.
