I think it was always assumed she was afraid of right wing crazies. But it might be true that she thought, or should have considered, that the greater danger more likely comes from the Left. Those are the people who treat anyone with dark skin who doesn't toe their party line like absolute dirt. That's where the real, public vileness comes from in large part.
