[H]is mind is one of the best examples of why the black male experience can be so difficult to integrate into the American WASP experience. His comedy is almost an x-ray of why black guys must be contained** by the wider society - there's no barriers on his brain.Patrice O'Neal, who died yesterday, at the age of 41.

Sad.
Having some variation of the name Patric___ O'Neal seems to cause strokes.
Someone should do a study.
@MayBee - A self-financed study.
Yeah at such a young age and so funny. No gimmicks, just a funny dude. At least we still have Paul Moody.
Here's my post to his death.
Truly a tragedy,...
Heart_Collector,
At least we still have Paul Moody.
Yeah, but Mooney's always been racial/racist. Patrice was "just a man" - a black man but still a normal guy - which is waaaay more daring,...
"Men are dumb and we are philosophical about our dumbness".
I was just introduced to Patrice earlier this year and now he's gone. Most people don't understand the important contribution, beyond just good laughs, that great comedians provide. They are even more important now w/ pc running amock.
Great comedians don't have any censor but themselves. They are the guerilla fighters in preserving free speech. There's a good HBO doc w/ Gervais, Seinfeld, Rock and Louis CK where they talk about pushing the envelope. These are 4 different comedians, from 4 different cultures, having a frank and honest discussion. My God I would vote for any of those 4 guys over any 4 politicians out there. TRUTH..HONESTY.
Crack that was a superb post..thanks
I like Moody cause I feel like I get to see the inside of a cynical black man uncensored but who deep down is doing it for the sake of the comedy of just that.
But I agree with what you say. As opposed to scaring a crowd pat knew how to work one. Definetly adds more comftability live. Sometimes the tension can really make a show though.
You could use the same rationale Crack used in his obit for the Lefties' put-up accusations against Herman Cain, "You can't let a black man in the White House. He'd be continually in rut. No white man would act like that".
Its a thin line between real black comedians and someone whos more blackface as in pushing the black just to amuse. I feel like Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy, Chris Rock, while all funny come off more as just like look at the crazy black man.
I like chappelle because he knows the line and jumps it for the sake of it.
First Greg Giraldo, now Patrice... all the Tough Crowd guys are dying off.
Can we order any dvd's of Patrice on Amazon?
Just threw a batting practice fastball professor..hit it! And then, as an homage to Patrice, uncensor your Amazon posts. I read Krugman and he turns off comments for noble reasons also.
So, I watched the first half of the first clip. Sigh. Funny? Sure. Creative? Not. Cheap? You bet.
I've pretty much lost all patience with black males. Done. Moving on.
How very sad.
Black guys must be contained by the wider society? In what alternative universe is that happening? Total crock. Remember when Eric Holder first called white Americans cowards and then said let's talk? There was no talk. Why? Because whites know by now that a frank discussion of anything relating to race is dangerous territory (as in career suicide) for them. Not so for blacks. It's the wider society that is contained by black guys.
Forty-one is awfully young. Too bad.
Watched the "comedy" clips. That I would write comedy in quotations marks means either that I'm WASPy and square or that they weren't particularly funny.
I can't believe you'd waste our attention by linking to a post containing videos of that vulgarity. "Have you pissed on her?" he asks a white guy sitting in the front row, referring to the guy's girlfriend. Wow, now that is some brilliant comedy!
That lout's 'comedy' is representative of the black contribution to American society: to coarsen it with crude sexual references that white people deem inappropriate. There's no wit there, no cleverness. Just refer to sexual and scatalogical matters than no one discusses in polite company and nervous white liberals will titter with self-conscious forced laughter. "Oh my, these blacks are so uninhibited! They just can't be tamed! They're so earthy! How positively refreshing that they seem unconstrained by society's ideas of decency and appropriateness and respect!"
That's all very exhiliarating to a SWPL until a flash mob of socially uninhibited blacks comes swarming out of the Wisconsin State Fair to bash in some white skulls. Maybe in his last conscious thoughts the SWPL will recall why whites worked so hard to develop decent societies out of their barbarian past. There's a reason that we build in social restrictions on the animal aspects of human behavior. It took a long time to develop that too...and now that social capital is being squandered by blacks who never have quite got the idea.
Meanwhile we're supposed to mourn the passing of this lout like he had some kind of talent.
Belushi, Farley, Bruce, Carlin, et al. are all there to greet him. He's already telling Jesus jokes while St. Paul looks on shaking his head in disapproval. :D

Clearly context has eluded you.
"Retired private investigator", eh Byro Spinelli. That's crazy, not to say stupid and tasteless, as usual, AZ acid-roids trash. Maybe we should stop mollycoddling you and just put you away, regardless of your Billy Idol imitation.
We agree on Neil Young.
wv: banter..indeed!
Hey Spinelli, what's with this Mary person, why does she continue to post here despite being deleted by Althouse, every time she posts?
Mary, gotta give you credit , you do not give up.
Allie, She's the female, anglo, Rice Lake, Joe Frazier...she just keeps comin'. That quality was noble in Joe; it's tedious w/ this wacky, hateful broad. I would suggest you try to get her mind right, except I doubt there's a mind there!
LOL, I guess I could try to diagnose Mary legally now that I'm retired . OK here goes;
Intermittent Explosive Disorder
But what set you off Mary? Angry about the rickshaw blog post, or this one about the untimely death of a black comedian?
Freeman Hunt: Watched the "comedy" clips. That I would write comedy in quotations marks means either that I'm WASPy and square or that they weren't particularly funny.
They weren't funny. I don't even know why the people in the audience were laughing. They were the easiest audience I've ever seen. They started laughing when Patrice first took a sip of water, before he'd said anything. They would have laughed if all he did was crack his knuckles and scratch his ass.
Now Richard Prior, there was a comedian.
I'm just off on a break, so not a lot of time:
1) Patrice wasn't angry at all. He was one of the most lovable guys imaginable.
2) He didn't make the world, and I can point you to videos of everything he's discussing in the first clip - it exists - including his famous story of same creepy gay guy asking him to let him into his car one night. Nobody talks about that in any of the gay discussions I see here - it's all about what we ought to be doing for our new model citizens.
I don't know what world you guys live in, but the one I inhabit has LOTS of weird shit nobody talks about and Patrice would, but with good humor and a welcoming spirit. if you're too much of a prude to even talk about it in a comedy club, that's your hang-up, not anyone else's. His list of bizarre sexual practices (the second clip) is hilarious.
3) If white people are afraid/bothered/whatever to discuss race, except in the way I see here sometimes, then it's YOU who should be called cowards - and unimaginative. I dare you all the time to be mature men and women and drop the shit but you never do or can, or won't even try to step out the box in any way, so you're also hypocrites because what you usually have to say is so trite I - as the resident black - can't even be bothered to join your nonsense. I usually feel braver than all of you there.
4) The audience was laughing with the recognition there's a real world out there, something the rest of you obviously have no clue about. Are YOU doing everything in the bedroom?
I seriously doubt it:
Step it up!
This is a repost I made at Crack's homage to Patrice.
The old biblical saw about a mote in your neighbors eye seems to be missed by some. The repost...
Eddie Murphy has a bit where he talks about getting phone calls from Bill Cosby, and Richard Pryor. One chastising Eddie for his vulgarity, the other not. I laugh at all three of them. If you don't like the vulgarity turn it off. You don't have to watch it, just don't try to dictate what I watch.
As Kat Williams related the story about why Flav O. Flav took all that abuse from the roast he was on,"Did you see the size of my check?"
Ideas and memes evolve, but much like prions can't be eradicated. I don't have to like what some one sez, but I can appreciate the right for them to say it. Especially if that same right is extended to me.
Perhaps if MnMark would spend more time trying to educate people instead of applying strawman logic to people and practices he didn't like the world would be more to his liking.
Allie, There's appaently a history w/ the professor and Mary that predates me[and I guess you also]. If recent history is an indicator, she'll be erased shortly. It is censorship but prudently applied. It gets The Spinelli Seal of Approval. Not that it's worth anything.
When my bride and myself spend winters in San Diego there are Farmers Markets w/ a full array of tie dyed apparel. I'll take an order from you if you wish..looks like XL in the upper thorax? I call it a DAIRY Queen model.
Spinelli, lol, yep XL it is "thorax" area. Dairy Queen, with colorful sprinkles on top.
I will be visiting my daughter near San Diego, when she gets back from A-Stan. I'm going to get an apartment for her in Carlsbad or Oceanside, so by the time she gets home it will be all set up for her, including her Cuban cat which I've been cat sitting for.
Allie, Firstly, and most importantly, please thank your daughter for her service. As far as tie dyed vendors, the Wednesday Ocean Beach Market is a good venue. You can pick out your shirts better than I can.
Thanks Spinelli, my daughter and I will check it out while I'm there, as well as some great sea food, good California wine and lots of relaxation.
Well, this thread looks totally different without Mary. I guess I see why she's banned, she's a scream.
MnMark,
I can't believe you'd waste our attention by linking to a post containing videos of that vulgarity. "Have you pissed on her?" he asks a white guy sitting in the front row, referring to the guy's girlfriend. Wow, now that is some brilliant comedy!
Funny, but people were laughing - including the girl the white guy was supposed to have pissed on. And, in just the few years he was working, Patrice O'neal went on to win the esteem of his peers in comedy - but not you. So what are you missing? What about the phrase "step it up in the bedroom" didn't you understand? And what, after uttering that phrase, is a comedian likely to do but go over-the-top? Have you ever studied comedy, or is ignoring humor in favor of policing comedy clubs for supposed "vulgarity" your thing?
That lout's 'comedy' is representative of the black contribution to American society: to coarsen it with crude sexual references that white people deem inappropriate. Really? The black contribution? Hey, Everybody, Lenny Bruce was black!
So you're of the opinion we should all stay at the level of Bill Cosby's "Why is there air?" (To blow up basketballs!) That kills 'em every time. Let me remind you that approximately 85%-90% of the top name talent abandoned that approach decades ago. Let me also remind you there's a guy named Howard Stern that white people, almost exclusively, can't seem to live without. And, of course, we all know it was black people who made "Two Girls/One Cup" and disgusted THE ENTIRE FUCKING WORLD.
You're like one of those people who thinks he knows music but, when I talk to them, it's only to discover they hate Rap because their tastes withered around the days of Lynard Skynard.
That's all very exhiliarating to a SWPL until a flash mob of socially uninhibited blacks comes swarming out of the Wisconsin State Fair to bash in some white skulls. What moronic planet do you live on? Patrice O'Neal was an actor and writer for The Dave Chappelle Show - a program beloved by blacks and whites alike. He was a permanent guest on the Opie and Anthony Show - two guys that, last time I checked, were white. he was known as a kind, gentle, and yes, lovable man.
I have no idea what you are,...
So what are you missing? What about the phrase "step it up in the bedroom" didn't you understand?
That was the one funny line. I didn't miss that.
No wait, the parrot thing was funny too.
That pissing bit is hilarious espically coming off of a long cooldown with rkelly and chappelle. Its over the top ridiculousness for the sake of it, thats why its funny.
Maybe if it was that guy with the hammer who smashes fruit you would approve.
Freeman Hunt,
No wait, the parrot thing was funny too.
"Eating old pussy is like licking an alligator's stomach."
I'm sorry, but that kills me every time. And, again, his list of sexual practices - with names like "Gorilla Mask," "Darth Vader," "The Angry Pirate," and "Chicken Cutlet" - already a classic.
The whole thing about "finger poppin' technique" is interesting, too - who talks about that? For comparison, two white comics - Joe Rogan and the late great Sam Kinison - have whole bits built about how no one taught them about sex, but here's a black guy giving details. Seriously, I really don't know what MnMark is complaining about:
From what I'm reading, white people clearly need all the help they can get,..
