"A Madison man stopped an attack on a Madison woman by pulling a gun on the alleged attacker..."

It happened in Madison!
The man with the gun held the suspect... at gunpoint until police arrived...

Police spokesman Joel DeSpain said the man got involved when he heard screams in a common hallway of the apartment building and went to investigate.

"He saw the suspect standing over the woman, stomping on her head," DeSpain said. "He yelled for the man to stop but his pleas fell on deaf ears."

The man went back to his apartment to get his cell phone so he could call 911, but he couldn't find the phone and grabbed the handgun instead.

"He went back into the hallway and pointed the gun at the suspect, once again ordering him to stop," DeSpain said. "This time, the suspect paid heed."

The presence of a firearm stopped a crime without a shot being fired. Happens every day.

gerry म्हणाले...

So, is such a use of a handgun in Madison illegal?

Oh, the humanity!

Diane म्हणाले...

Truly, the amazing part is that this happened in Madison (I'm assuming the Madison PD haven't found anything to charge the good samaritan with - yet?)

Mogget म्हणाले...

Heh. We'll see how the Madtown cops and the DA react to this. It may give us a read on how smoothly implementation of concealed carry will go...

Well, yeah.

I'm sure some union work rules were violated.

'Alleged' attacker, indeed! Stopped in the act, that's a good step over the line of allegation.

But the alleged reporter and his alleged editors are so fearful that the Gods of political correctitude might frown that they mindlessly insert the kneejerk formula.

Can't the media please apply some common sense?

Lorenzo Brown, head stomper.

Fred4Pres म्हणाले...

No good turn goes unpunished, I would not be surprised if he is charged with some gun crime.

Because Wisconsin is almost as crazy as New York, New Jersey, Chicago and DC when it comes to gun laws.

Insufficiently Sensitive म्हणाले...

Officers were responding to a report of a weapons offense

Now THERE'S a good Madison citizen. The stomper must have told the 'reporter' that the stompee was a supporter of Governor Walker, and of course that made the stomping all right - but the gun was unforgiveable.

TFA says the aren't going to charge the Samaritan with anything.

(I was stuck on the right noun. "Bystander" isn't right, he's the opposite of that. But "samaritan" sounds vaguely pacifist. Maybe "hero" is about right.)

SPOT ON Comment, but don't you know that the Media lack all common sense?!

How about "minuteman?"

Thank God for those gun toting right wingers in Madison! I wonder what one of those singing liberals would have done? Start singing, of course..see how absurd that sounds.

edutcher म्हणाले...

It lists the ages of the woman and her savior, otherwise I'd suspect the woman was a well-known bloggress and the man a former resident of the Cinncinati area.

अनामित म्हणाले...

Good for him! Beats yelling "Shame Shame" at the criminal.

No, no. As a liberal when presented with this situation you will either a) immediately snap into action trying to figure out just how our unjust system forced this poor guy into violent behavior and/or b) run around looking for help and screaming, "IS THERE A BITTER CLINGER IN THE HOUSE?"

अनामित म्हणाले...

"This time, the suspect paid heed."

THIS is the most important take away line for those who believe guns don't solve anything.

Pretty powerful story, ain't it?

Followup to EDH's "personal policy".

"Sir, did you issue a warning for the dead man you shot to stop? Or you would shoot?"

"No, my personal policy is to just walk up and shoot."

EDH

The word you were seeking when talking to LE about use of a firearm is "Stop". As in "my policy is to make the aggressor stop his attempt to commit grievous bodily injury. It just so happened that stopping him entailed a 158 gr bullet to his head because I wanted to make certain the victim was not further injured."

Which is why Bob Owens felt that he needed a lawyer in his holster as well as a sidearm....

traditionalguy म्हणाले...

The colt revolver was not called the peacemaker for nothing.

Witnesses were few and far between in the west. Confrontations were one on one and to the armed went the spoils.

traditionalguy म्हणाले...

In the west they all open carried, thus stopping most murders.

The question became who could draw his gun and fire faster.

When the answer was unknown, then neither one drew and fired.

अनामित म्हणाले...

Go figure, eh?

Jennifer म्हणाले...

The attacker claims the woman lured him to his apartment on the promise of a romantic interlude then pulled a knife. The woman claims she was going to his apartment to use his cell phone when he...? chased her out to the hallway then started stomping on her head?

I would love to hear the "third" side to this story. Ie the truth...

Shanna म्हणाले...

Some people robbed a church during the service yesterday here!

They tried to pass a law a few years ago to allow you to carry concealed in church but I don't think it passed.

Jennifer म्हणाले...

traditionalguy - They still do that in some parts of the west. I spent a summer working on a dude ranch outside of a tiny little town in Wyoming. The county both sat in had roughly 9 men to every woman. Sitting in a bar one night with two girlfriends and a lot of guys I asked "how is that this place doesn't just erupt into barfights every night"? Cowboy said "everyone's packin'". Ohhhh.

I hate to second guess a successful good Samaritan, but I wouldn't pull a gun on someone without intending to kill him.

I wouldn't want to walk around the rest of my days knowing someone out there was afraid I'd shoot them, planning some kind of retribution when I'm not expecting it.

But I guess I am not really in tune with Madison culture. That kind of idea may seem crazy. I'd have shot the attacker. Would I have gone to prison?

Scott M म्हणाले...

I hate to second guess a successful good Samaritan, but I wouldn't pull a gun on someone without intending to kill him.

This is why a telescoping baton is a good idea to carry. Lethality is not always necessary.

dhagood म्हणाले...

what i always understood was that you didn't point a weapon at a person you did not intend to shoot, and if you intended to shoot them you kept shooting until you had in fact shot them. if this meant that they got shot multiple times, well, so much the better.

also, "shooting to wound" is nonsense. shoot at the center of mass, and shoot till they're shot.

shooting somebody is the very last resort. but if it's necessary, make sure you shoot them.

Kirk Parker म्हणाले...

Scott M.,

"Lethality is not always necessary."

Ummm, if your telescoping baton isn't potentially lethal, then you're doing something majorly wrong with it.

Shanna,

What micro-managing state is that, if I may ask?

Kirk Parker म्हणाले...

What a revelation--all this time Cedarford has been talking about England and we've all been assuming he's in, and talking about, America. No wonder he's so confusing...

Seriously, C4: there are still a couple of benighted jurisdictions in the US, perhaps, that have some form of Duty to Retreat (sadly)--but a Duty to Warn???? You have got to be kidding me!

Scott M म्हणाले...

Ummm, if your telescoping baton isn't potentially lethal, then you're doing something majorly wrong with it.

There nothing mutually exclusive about what I said, "lethality is not always necessary" and the fact that a telescoping baton is potentially lethal. Are you suggesting that, like a firearm, one should only use a baton if one intends to kill? Never hit anything you don't want to kill?

I think you missed the point, for which you will be beaten severely (but not lethally) about the neck and shoulders.

That would be Arkansas. We have concealed carry, you just can't carry in church.
