"It’s still impossible to sum up what Obama’s presidency is about right now, except saving his own job."

That's how Maureen Dowd sums it up this week.

Lot of insults for Republicans too: "They’re revolutionary Bolsheviks who want to eat Obama alive" and "nihilist[s who] go unchallenged in their crazy claims to be saving the country they’re hurting."

Maureen Dowd has a split personality lately - her pieces start out about the glowing spectacular Obama and end up facing bitter reality - like she gets wound up as she goes.

She sees it. But she doesn't want to. She's being drug, kicking and screaming into the light, and the sunshine burns. Damn those Republicans. It would be so much nicer to be ignorant and stay in the shade.

I read that thing and was amazed that it was only about cheerleading. No substance, no analysis of the issues, no comparing of the two sides. It's just "Go team, go!"

I guess if statements of fact can be called "insults", then Dowd did have "plenty of insults for Republicans...."

U.S. Senator Borah, upon learning of Germany's 1939 invasion of Poland, exclaimed "Lord, if only I could have talked with Hitler, all this might have been avoided."

How many Democrat wise men and women have just as foolishly had the same thought about BHO at various points in the last 2 years?

Jason म्हणाले...

The comment by Dowd about Republicans is rich, considering she spent nearly all 8 years of the Bush/Cheney administration ripping Bush and Cheney in nearly every column she wrote. She was probably the fiercest critic of Cheney of the major newspaper column writers, spewing more vitriol towards him than just about anyone.

Its Obama's own fault he isnt setting the agenda right now. He pissed away the first two years of his term - while his party held super-majorities in both houses of Congress - passing a POS health care law that a majority of the country doesnt want along with a $1 trillion "stimulus" plan that the country disagreed with. Now that both of those have proven to be utter failures, what does Dowd or any of the liberal elite expect?

Unknown म्हणाले...

The Republicans are Bolsheviks, the Jews are Nazis, the Libertarians are Communitarians, the Democrats are Monarchists.

The Dowd is sinking, and there's no one there to pick up the survivors. They bought the tickets, they knew the risks: I say, let them crash!

Rose म्हणाले...

Really, Robert? When did Democrats decide that fiscal responsibility was a Republican thing? When did racing to bankrupt the nation become good and those who try to stop it become evil?

Obama's speech was not magnificent - it was a horrible mish mash of mercury laden angst and too-crowded skies, did he throw in the kitchen sink, too?

And schools. When did schools become the job of "our Federal Family"? I don't know about where you are, but here they have closed at least three school due to declining enrollment - as I drove by one of them today, I thought how hollow his ridiculous speech was. Surely, even the most partisan Democrat can see it.

Obama's vision of what a construction worker is is also highly flawed. He thinks they all build bridges or something. Around here, they're the electricians and plumbers and sheetrockers and carpenters who WERE building houses - and aren't. They aren't going to move to Ohio to line up for a few jobs building another bridge. He doesn't have a clue.

She is surprised that a man raised in a Lib/Prog cocoon, worked in a Lib/Prog cocoon and learned his tactics in a Lib/Prog cocoon with little to no experience of governing with people who are his equals and with almost no exposure to the stage of national or international politics has difficulty governing the United States of America. Yes to the former, but isn't that his own darned fault? (And, BTW, shouldn't "President" be capitalized according to the NYT style guide?)

As to the latter, what precisely are Republicans supposed to do when they examine the President's proposals and rightly conclude that they're a recipe for disaster?

What a foolish, bitter, old woman she is.

Maureen Dowd is an example of the maxim that reality can be deferred but ultimately cannot be denied.

Obama may yet wind up doing to the democrats what Hoover did to the republicans. Interesting thing thing is that both men were/are progressives. And that FDR ran in '32 on what was basically a republican platform of lower taxes and federal spending and borrowing.

She still wants the Lightworker, the sort of God from the Greek temple.

For God's sake, woman, grow up!

"Does he get it together when the country’s in trouble or when he’s in trouble?"

Does she get it this is the vainest man in the world and, like her other Demo wet dream, Willie Whitewater, it's all about him - and only him? In Zero's case, he'll never get it together. Ugh. Dowd.

My opinion: Maureen Dowd somehow (while in high school, it would seem) stumbled upon a writing formula that some people like, and has been cashing in on it for years.

Time after time, it's the same...like she's filled out a page from Mad-Libs (which is rather appropriate, come to think of it), turning it in as some unique creation and thinking herself brilliant.

I can almost hear her muttering to herself: "I don't think a football is a very good Christmas present."

Interesting how republican voices are an "all-out assault on President Obama.. but democrats are "beseeching voices from his despairing base"

Given Maureen's summary, now I'm at a loss as to how to characterise Hoffa's
"take the sons of bitches out"
.. plea?

Maybe Hoffa is a closet republican who was 'assailing' the beleaguered President by trying to make him look bad.. yet again.

On Obama’s first trip to Louisiana after the disaster, the governor describes how the president took him aside on the tarmac after arriving to complain about a letter that Jindal had sent to the administration requesting authorization for food stamps for those who had lost their jobs because of the spill.

As Jindal describes it, the letter was entirely routine, yet Obama was angry and concerned about looking bad.

"Careful," he quotes the president as warning him, "this is going to get bad for everyone."

Slightly off topic, because I can't bear to read Dowd, but re what O might be doing to "save his job."

So we now know the FBI is involved in a cover-up related to the Gunwalker scandal-- made a gun "disappear" at a murder scene.

Is it paranoid to be suspicious about the federal "raid" on Solyndra, made after the Congressional investigation was announced?

I really don't know anymore. It's so difficult to calibrate one's paranoia meter, given the kind of things this administration has done-- and given the negligence & dishonesty of the MSM covering it. (Though our fourth estate has been a little better of late, e.g. the AP actually fact-checked his speech and unmasked the BS of his plan being "paid for.")

yashu म्हणाले...

Then there's stuff like this, from a few weeks ago.

The administration didn't just "cleanse" photo captions on its website (which referred to Jerusalem being in Israel), with the ostensible defense that they did this to be consistent with Bush administration policy. They weren't just wrong-- or lying through their teeth-- about this being Bush administration policy (thus concealing the real reason: "The Obama White House is gearing up for a Supreme Court case in which it will defend its refusal to list 'Jerusalem, Israel' on the passports of Americans born in the Israeli capital"). The State Department actually took the time to go back & rewrite history:

It gets worse for Obama’s defenders, though, than merely being demonstrably wrong. It turns out that while they were insisting that the Bush administration consistently refused to reference “Jerusalem, Israel,” the Obama State Department was busy scrubbing documents in which Bush administration referenced “Jerusalem, Israel.” Straight down the memory hole. That’s kind of amazing when you pause and think about it, no?

The “Jerusalem, Israel” captions and statements from the Bush-era White House are digitally archived and frozen, and so beyond the administration’s reach. But Bush-era State Department reports are stored on the Obama State Department’s servers. Two old documents in particular – the State Department’s FY 2002 and FY 2003 Performance and Accountability Reports – come up quickly in searches. When they were originally written they both had appendices identifying the location of the Jerusalem consulate as “Jerusalem, Israel.” Some time in the last two weeks that location was changed to “Jerusalem.” Whoever made the changes even went back and scrubbed the old “hard copy” PDFs. You can do the compare and contrast yourself. Click on these links for scrubbed versions of FY 2002 HTML, FY 2003 HTML, FY 2002 PDF, FY 2003 PDF, and on these links for cached original versions of FY 2002 HTML, FY 2003 HTML, FY 2002 PDF, FY 2003 PDF.

I mean, I know I've described this administration as "Orwellian" before… but are you kidding me with this? What's shocking here isn't even the content of the alterations, but the fact of them: actually doctoring a past administration's "hard copy" PDF documents, with the intent to deceive, support a false cover story. And if they routinely do things like this, what else have they done, are they doing, are they capable of doing?

The good thing is, O's doing so badly & lost so much credibility that it's unlikely even the most corrupt cynical Chicago strategery, abetted by the MSM's blind eye, will save him in 2012. But still, ugh. And then, to have to endure O & his MSM minions getting on their high horse to self-righteously lecture the GOP & the American people on morality & honest politics?

Maureen sounds like she has been watching too many sensational tag YouTube videos.

Maureen probably means to suggest that as recent as 2007, Obamas skin color was thought to be a liability.. (fair enough)
But if we are talking about a context of the boldest risks in history the risk was not so apparent to Obama himself who ultimately ran and won.

In Obamas own words, from the so called 'race speech' in PA.

This was one of the tasks we set forth at the beginning of this campaign - to continue the long march of those who came before us, a march for a more just, more equal, more free, more caring and more prosperous America.
I chose to run for the presidency at this moment in history because I believe deeply that we cannot solve the challenges of our time unless we solve them together - unless we perfect our union by understanding that we may have different stories, but we hold common hopes; that we may not look the same and we may not have come from the same place, but we all want to move in the same direction - towards a better future for of children and our grandchildren.
This belief comes from my unyielding faith in the decency and generosity of the American people
.
Hardly the dangerous America envisioned by Maureen's "boldest risks in history".

The second Boldest risk.. the decision to go after Bin Laden was.. oops.. wait a minute..

Bush said to CNN in 2006 (while still president) that he would go into Pakistan to get Bin Laden if the intelligence was good.

So if Bush was prepared to take one of the boldest risk in history.. was it really that bold and risky?

Of course maybe prescient Bush said that just to make Obama look bad ;)

Ms. Dowd is writing interesting stuff as she sours on President Obama.

Her conclusion is right on about him being almost entirely focused upon saving his own job at this point.

But she cannot shake at some level her adulation of Obama. Listen to what she says: "given the fact that he took two of the boldest risks in history — jumping into the presidential race in the first place and giving the kill order on Bin Laden on sketchy intelligence."

How can an intelligent person possibly reach that conclusion? His entry into the presidential race was virtually without risk. He was a two year senator, virtually guaranteed both 40% of the primary vote in many states on racial grounds and the VP slot if he did not win the nomination. And, even if he somehow got less, what was the risk?

And Bin Laden? He had been observed for about 6 months living in a house with no security protection. Obama sent a Seals unit, the fiercest and best fighters in the world, to take out a 60 year old weakling, two couriers and several wives. I suppose both helicopters could have crashed (instead of one), but the risk was minimal. He sends the Seals to kill an old man and that is supposed to be one of ht boldest risks in history.

And, she also credits him with a great speech when it was obviously a campaign event cooked up by his political advisors. Do you realize the said about 17 times "pass this bill" when there literally is no bill to consider? He has not even written it. And he insulted all of us by claiming the $500 billion plan was "paid for," when his idea of that is to ask the "super committee" to find $500 billion more in savings. Then, the next morning he heads out on a campaign appearance repeating the mantra of "pass the [non-existent] bill."

At one level, Ms. Down understands President Obama is a fraud. But she just can't quite stop expressing her adulation at the same time.

ps I is a minor deal, but the liberal press has started calling the great Barack "Barry." It shows the level of disillusionment.

I must admit that I saw Mo Do's reference to "his magnificent brain" and thought WTF?

====================
I think Obama is smarter than average, smart enough to be President...but I see no exceptional intelligence on display..just a lucky guy carried far on affirmative action. No Jefferson, Lincoln, Wilson, no Hoover, no Nixon or Clinton. Not even in the same IQ park as Hillary. Pat Buchanan, Bwanney Fwank, Schumer, or Mitt Romney.

For 70 or so years, the media has cultivated the image of their select Democrat heroes and pets like John McCain as junior Einsteins.
FDR was supposed to be a matchless genius guiding every affair in America. He was a genius at selecting people far smarter than him with the right character traits, to do a good job. And he only guided one affair - with Lucy.
Then came egghead Adlai. JFK as a brilliant author. Hubert Humphrey as "the smartest man in the Midwest since Adlai". The brilliant Mondale and the all-wise Michael Dukakis. Then the legitimately Nixon-level IQ Bill Clinton.
But we soon had people shilling his successor Algore, as the Ubermind that knew Everything!!. (Problem became Algore believing his press) Then Jean Claude Kerry, the LOVED! debating genius from Yale.
They did get Obama in, in part by showing how stupid their former pet, John McCain, actually was. But the Transcendental Mind of Black Messiah was a constant theme of liberals and progressive Jews writing most the media fodder feeding Obam's image. Despite no scholarly work, no tenure, no real court case history as a lawyer...why, he was as smart as two Genius Algores!!

Hold on there cowboy. Who said 'woo'?

My thinking was closer to a 'you're the last two people on the planet and humanity is depending on you' scenario, than I was thinking of a wining and dining (like that which America's Pimp has experienced) ordeal.

She also did refer to his "magnificent brain." He has never produced his test scores or grades. He benefited from affirmative action his entire life (without justification, his parents were a white girl from Kansas and a Kenyan - no African American heritage that would warrant affirmative action.) He is a smart guy, but far short of "magnificentt brain" or the other genius praise he receives.

I want it now. Do you remember Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory about the English young lady?

It's funny how much Modo get's right. But she just can't put it together:

Obama likes to come in late, after the other players have staked out positions. It’s a strangely risk-averse tact

the odd rhythms of his temperament are less interesting when so much is at stake

Disengaging when the United States and the world are going to hell is playing with fire.

In the capital of political tactics, it was just another fine day of faking it.

I put her real thesis last. There's no such thing as "Energizing Barry" or "electrifying" Barry or bold, risky Barry. There's not even "strangely" Barry or "odd" Barry. He is exactly what his opponents -- from Hillary in the primaries to the Tea Party in the summer of 2009 to the House Republicans -- told us he is. A man not ready, or inclined, for the executive.

For his proponents, he is strange, a kind of reverse-Zelig, a man whose accomplishments are thrust upon him (by academic panderers, by idealistic primary voters, by Nancy Pelosi, by the CIA) yet must be cast as the image of accomplishment.

The plot to assassinate Hitler.

Clyde म्हणाले...

And reading Dowd's article, it's hard to believe she's living in the same country as the rest of us. Same with the other Democrats who are worried about Obama getting re-elected because "he's not been getting his message out." The problem is not Obama getting the message out, it's the subject of the message itself, both words and actions, which have resulted in a downward economic spiral and the lowest percentage of the population employed in decades. And yet, Obama's plan is to double down on what he has been doing and yell louder about doing it. And he expects a different result this time!

Some of us know the definition of insanity: Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting to get a different result.
