I just started seeing this on Twitter. The story is that the White House is co-operating closely with a movie production about the killing of Bin Laden, without traditional disclosure, security considerations being addressed. Peter King on the case.

Cynical election scheme?

DO NOT FEED THE BEARS!

Down here in Florida, it's the alligators that become a problem when some idiot illegally feeds them.

I just realized Obama's initials are B.O.

Am I the slowest guy in the universe or what?

He signs his tweets B.O.

You stink!

Saint Croix म्हणाले...

If I was in fourth grade I would have figured that out a lot quicker.

Clyde म्हणाले...

@ Lincolntf,

Do you think there will be a scene where Obama is yanked off the links and brought into the situation room where there is an already active operation to kill Bin Laden? If not, then cinema verite is dead.

The economy is so bad now that the maintenance guys who always cut the grass on public highways have all been laid off.

It reminds me of the popular run of science show showing the earth aftre man has been eliminated.

The EnviroCommunists are winning by destroying the capitalist economies with Regs and Welfare.

There have been so many bear attack stories lately, I was nervous and literally ran up and down the Maryland high point hike we did on Sunday.

Crack Emcee, that's funny.

Alas, great ads don't produce winning candidates. Mike Gavel was in his own world.

I thought you were serious, here.

But Americans aren't gonna get great candidates. We just get off-key singers. Arranged to play for the tone-deaf.

I think both sides are now exhausted.

But it's still also like a teapot in a tempest.

The grass is always greener. While checking the stock market on Yahoo I watched an interview with J. Stiglitz who says the country can turn things around in 4 relatively easy steps:
1. Repeal the Bush-Obama tax cuts for the richest Americans.
2. End the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, "that have not improved our security" and are costing trillions of dollars. In 2010 Stiglitz published the book: The Three Trillion Dollar War: The True Cost of the Iraq Conflict.
3. Get Americans back to work. Stimulus and works programs are politically untenable right now but Stiglitz says spending on these programs will ultimately reduce the debt because if we put people to work and "our tax revenues will increase enormously"
4. Reform Medicare Part D - Under the current law, big pharma sets their own prices. Stiglitz says if that provision is eliminated and the government can negotiate drug prices it would save taxpayers $1 trillion over the next 10 years.

"Next week’s recall elections may be even more important than I thought, since one group is claiming that a “RINO” state senator (Dale Schultz, who voted against the collective bargaining bill) is a risk to switch parties, which would flip the Senate unless Republicans take back one more seat. The Wisconsin State Journal referred to Schultz as one of the “ultimate winners” of last night’s vote because it puts him in the driver’s seat."

English cities are replaying the Lord of the Flies with youth rioting and killing.

The replacement of parental/father authority over boys with a Nanny state free ride with no punishments has backfired big time.

The idiots will just keep pretending for government paychecks to the Nannies.

Crack, I got mine when I read roesch-voltaire's comment just before yours.

In memory of the Laffer curve, I'd like to coin the "Stiglitz Curve", the idea that the more money the government spends the more money it takes in (see item #3).

Put the Laffer and Stiglitz curves together and you end up with a government that employs everyone tax-free.

Not only is World War Z going to be rated PG-13 (big mistake), but it's going to come out on December 21st, 2012 (bigger mistake) opposite Johnny Depps Lone Ranger and will feature Brad Pitt scurrying about the global trying to prevent the apocalypse from happening (BIGGEST FUCKING MISTAKE).

Sigh.

The Blonde and I are back from WV. Nice time, but the place we usually stay was a little sparse in attendance (we haven't been there in 4 years).

Carol Herman is right. Traffic on the roads is a little sparse, too.

Gas prices no doubt part of the reason.

Carol, honey, when you're right, you nail it.

Zombie Piffle…..Brad Pitt, could be worse could be Matt Damon or Val Kilmer…PREVENTING the vastly-over-rated Zombie Apocalypse? Isn’t the POINT of the book the vastly over-rated Zombie Apocalypse? What, this isn’t 1965. People EXPECT Zombies to be dominant in Zombie movies…whilst everyone knows zombies and EMP are greatly over-rated threats, who needs a film about zombies, where the goal is to PREVENT the Apocalypse? On that front I’m with you.

I am dreading Conan the Barbarian. 3-D ruins a movie and as a one-time Conan fanboi, I dread what they will do to the story this time…ANY of the short stories, with just a few exceptions, would make for a great film. INSTEAD we’ll have a totally new story, with just a patina of the “real” Conan stories thrown in…like Belit in the first one with Schwarzenegger… Oh to see The People of the Black Circle on film and the Black Seer of Yimsha*SIGH* or Jewels of Gwahlur.

Scott M म्हणाले...

The point of the book was talking to survivors 10 years after humans almost became extinct, so the movie starts off 180 degrees wrong.

I am dreading Conan the Barbarian.

The early word was that they were borrowing heavily from the MMO, which was, at least atmospherically, awesome and true to the stories. Speaking of which, I hadn't read Conan since I was a kid when Ahhhnald's movie came out. Rereading them as an adult, I was pleasantly surprised at how much fun they were to read. Simple, straightforward, and fun. Conan is the best two-dimensional character ever created.

Aren't the hoodies being worn in the UK by rioters to avoid being identified on CCTV reason enough to ban the burqa?

BJM म्हणाले...

@Joe (The Uncredentialed, Crypto Jew)

I am dreading Conan the Barbarian.

I was too, until I learned that Joseph Momoa was cast as Conan.

I had similar quarrels with HBO's "Game of Thrones"...but Martin's SoF&I is too complex and layered to transition easily to screen and one of the bright spots in GoT was Momoa's Khal Drogo.

He has the physical presence we'll see if he can carry an entire movie and emerge from the expected SFX overkill as Conan.

Scott M म्हणाले...

one of the bright spots in GoT was Momoa's Khal Drogo

Watched GoT avidly (still wondering through book 5), but didn't put 2 and 2 together here. I agree fully.

Still, Joe had a good point. Instead of breathing life into one of the classic shorts or even the novel, they chose to invent new material and put Conan clothing on it. Why? The Conanverse is FULL of material.

BJM म्हणाले...

@Scott M

The early word was that they were borrowing heavily from the MMO, which was, at least atmospherically, awesome and true to the stories.

It could also lead to a huge disappointment, for like reading books or stories, what one creates in one's mind and/or the time & space of a MMO is always richer and more satisfying than a movie.

I think this will become more of a problem for film production in the scifi & fantasy genre as gaming and MMO is fan driven and develops much faster and more organically than a film production; which by its nature is a cumbersome patchwork beast.

BJM म्हणाले...

Conan clothing on it. Why? The Conanverse is FULL of material.

Because the producers are money guys, not fan boys.

Jackson succeeded with LOTR because he and Fran Walsh knew the material cold and gave us a story arc that connected with the book's multi-generational fan base...even so millions of Tolkien fans still disagree with their choices.

I'm also dubious about Emmerich helming "Foundation" for the same reasons...too much whiz bang and not enough nuance.

The Crack Emcee म्हणाले...

Momoa's choice is AWESOME! An absolutely great casting job:

Frazetta come to life.

Otherwise, I never have high hopes for these movies (hated Ahnold) so I rarely go see them and I'm never disappointed. They could give a shit about me, my memories, or knowledge of the material, so why should I give a shit?

They're just going to ruin it anyway.

Synova म्हणाले...

They've got some Conan television show on hulu. I can take a whole lot of camp for the sake of muscle bound awesomeness but... I do realize that body builders wax... Conan did not wax! And everyone looked so clean, like they had indoor plumbing or something. I couldn't watch even the first episode.

Conan ought to have a hairy chest. Really! I think that the new movie at least makes everyone look suitably dirty, so that's helpful.
