@rcocean: A different point of view is that President Ford's pardon of Nixon was more responsible for him losing the 1976 election, that plus appointing Silk Stocking Blue Blood Nelson Rockefeller as VP to boot.
Ford was a RINO type to begin with and Rockefeller only added to that judgement of him in the minds of conservatives.
The '76 election was so close you could blame Ford's loss on any of a hundred causes -- the pardon, the eastern Europe quasi-gaffe, falling down the airplane stairs, SNL making fun of him, and so on and so on.
Very unlike her to make her exit late on a Friday evening in July.
When he was President (or right after), my mother and I delivered a Meal-on-Wheel to their former next door neighbor in Alexandria. The M-o-W were cooked at their church, Immanuel on the Hill, across the street from the Episcopal Seminary. It was weird to see their names on a bulletin board.
What were the odds that 3 out of 4 of the First & Second Ladys' boobs would go cancerous in a very short window of time?
At the time, I don't remember anyone blaming her for Jerry's loss, but the press liked her outspokenness (and social liberality) and there was little alternative media then.
I can't agree with Mrs Reagan's quote, "She was Jerry Ford’s strength through some very difficult days in our country’s history". Her addictions were one more cross for her husband to bear at the time of his Presidency, but she did kick them and I know how hard that can be, so kudos to her for that.
It seems like the death of political women brings out the dark side in a lot of men on this blog. Didn't mommy pay enough attention to you little boys?

Could you imagine a republican woman like her today?
No Fucking Way!
She cost Jerry a lot of votes in '76. So no, I can't.
How did she die?
R.I.P Betty. You were a good and truthful Woman. Thank you for the Legacy.
Sincerely,
"How did she die?"
I don't know, she was 93. Makes me want to give up alcohol.
It takes years off your life.
Perhaps recent Betty Ford Center resident Lindsay Lohan can lead all of the Center residents and alumni in raising a glass in Betty's honor.

Anyway, Betty Ford was a good person. RIP.

Hard to believe Betty Ford was in the same party as Ann Coulter.
