"He’s the most beloved actor I’ve ever worked with — and there’s a reason for it."

Jodie Foster on Mel Gibson (who stars in her new movie "The Beaver").

Jodie Foster in a movie called The Beaver.

I just can't do it.

The script for The Beaver made the famous 'black list' as one of the best unproduced scripts in town.

I think it looks good ... however, the trailer never hints at the fact that the puppet doesn't really want to let go.

It supposedly gets very dark.

And I am happy that Foster has not abandoned Gibson even thought it would be easy and politically expedient for her to do so.

Why do newspapers report cliches?

Movie director says:
“He’s funny and bright and comes to work prepared, and he’s loyal, too. He’s a good person. Period.”

Football coach says:
"We are going to play to our strengths. On Saturday morning, we are going to button up the war-bonnet, and play some hard nose football."

Translation: The movie is gonna suck. The football coach will soon be looking for a job.

Yeah talk about a slow pitch for him.

Someday I'll figure out how Charlie Sheen became a hero while Mel Gibson became a goat.

Mel Gibson is a strange cat, but when did that ever prevent someone from being a good actor or director?

He was raised by a rabid anti Semetic father (who he loves). The guy is obviously conflicted and while there is no defending his comments in the past and there is no more denying the anti Semetic undertones of The Passion, he is clearly also not your standard anti Semite bigot. He is a very good actor and director. He has a problem with alcohol. He probably regrets leaving his wife for the crazy Russian woman. In a weird alternative universe sort of way he is similar to Tony Soprano. All of this makes Mel Gibson interesting.

And it says something how Jodie Foster stands up for her friends like Mel Gibson and Robert Downey Jr.

Someday I'll figure out how Charlie Sheen became a hero while Mel Gibson became a goat.

That is easy. He is an right wing Catholic who said completely over the top anti Semetic and anti Gay comments. And then he did an Alec Baldwin rant against his wife.

But the first reason is why Gibson is a goat. All the rest would be forgiven by a 28 day visit to rehab.

Real friends go with the braying mob and abandon the ones in troubles. Oops, that's like Obama!

IMO Jodi and Mel seem to be afflicted with a heritance of Scots-Irish genes that can trap them into loyal relationships with unsafe people. Still that makes them two people that I would want on my side in a fight.

Given how many dhimmis are in Hollyweird, you'd think he'd have gotten a pass.

Gibson may be Scots and he may be Irish, but, if he's Catholic, he ain't Scotch-Irish (proper term).

Art can be therapy.

This documentary movie is amazing. The images this guy creates are stunning. Jody Foster and Mel Gibson could make this guy's work into a dramatized movie. I think it would be facinating.

MayBee म्हणाले...

It's true. I suspect she appreciates those who have been loyal to her as well. She's gay in a town that (now) strongly advocates for the acceptance of gay people, but in a career where being out and gay isn't necessarily great for your career.

traditionalguy म्हणाले...

Edutcher. You are right. But even John Knox was Catholic once before conversion to the reformed tradition. As to the spelling difference, I believe Scotch-Irish is a modern re-naming from confusing single malt whiskey with single minded men.

Dustin म्हणाले...

Mel Gibson isn't a monster so much as a person who lost his mind and needed help. He hurt people in the process, but apparently he also has some friends who wanted him to get better.

That's terrific. I can't say I've ever f'ed up as bad as Mel has, but I have made mistakes, and I knew my friends by how they reacted.

Someone who is in a depression which is chemically based (Foster's description of Gibson's character in The Beaver) and not based on his personal circumstances can't pull himself out of that depression as the Gibson character does in this film. What happens is that the chemical imbalance rights itself for reasons we don't understand and then may very well go out of balance again and pitch the person right back into depression. But that wouldn't make for an uplifting movie.

"NICE BEAVER!!!!!"

Phil 314 म्हणाले...

I've enjoyed a lot of Mr. Gibson's movies. At the same time, its clear he's a "tortured" individual (Apocalypto well exemplifies that).

I was glad to see the previews for this movie because it told me that at least someone was still willing to work with him.

So to speak.

Give him a break already. His wife has dropped the assault charges, which suggests they are without merit or she needs some cash.
He wasn't able to appear in The Hangover II. Give the guy a break.

TGI, that's what I'm thinking, too. Her words and/or actions tell him essentially, "This is not who you really are." She sees past his darkness. What a gift...

Trooper York म्हणाले...

What you don't get is that Jodie knows that a lot of the superliberal types pay lip service to gay people but they don't like them while this super conservative Catholic is a true and loyal friend to her.

And she is a true and loyal friend to him. That shows a hell of a lot of character. I salute her.

Bruce Hayden म्हणाले...

Gibson, in a recent interview, indicated that he believes that Foster is fairly unique in Hollywood as to her loyalty. It is a quality that he really appreciates, esp. given what has happened to him there in recent years.

They apparently bonded when they made Maverick together, and have stayed good friends since then, despite often being at opposite ends of the political spectrum on a number of issues.

Are you saying what I think you're saying?

jr565 म्हणाले...

Am I the only one who thinks that as Jodie has become more openly gay she has gotten less attractive and more butch looking.
That being said, I too support her loyalty to Mel. She sounds like a real class act, somebody who you'd be glad to count as a friend.

I suspect Jodie is a liberal, and doesn't have any principles, therefore she will stick with someone, no matter how objectionable his behavior is

I disagree. Jodi Foster is liberal, but I gained alot of respect for her going back to school to gradaute with honors, instead of becoming resting on the promise of her acting career.

I think her interactions with John Hinkley dampened any desire to share her politics with her fans.

She one of my favs, even more so because she respects our relationship enough to not prosyltize while she's entertaining me.

Oblig: "We're finally going to see Mel Gibson in Jodie Foster's beaver!"

For a gay-baiting anti-semite, Mel's gay and Jewish friends seem to defend him pretty hard. Maybe life's not as simple as hanging a label on someone.

I still don't see the anti-semitism in the Passion, Fred4Pres.
