A cool article about the un-wieldy Mississippi relevant to the today's flooding. It's from the New Yorker and drones on and on for no reason, but the first part is interesting.

RuyDiaz and chickenlittle: Thanks to both of you for exposing the writings of B, Henri-Levin for what they are. However, it's also true that us Hoi Polloi need to be quiet and allow our Socialist Betters, those wonderful Socialist Elites, to continue to rain over us all.

My goodness, what will the world think if we dare to accuse such an elite like Straus-Kahn.

Chip S. म्हणाले...

France's leading public intellectual doesn't seem any more constrained by facts than Paul Krugman. This bit of idiocy by BHL is highlighted in the essay linked by RuyDiaz:

I am troubled by a system of justice modestly termed “accusatory,” meaning that anyone can come along and accuse another fellow of any crime—and it will be up to the accused to prove that the accusation is false and without basis in fact.

wv cramite: Dominique Strauss-Kahn's customary way of greeting a chambermaid. Bonjour, mademoiselle. Cramite-tois mon paupol, s'il vous plait.

I read the reviews on Amazon for American Vertigo starting with the worst first because they're reliably the best. The best reviews are near to worthless. The general consensus of the bad reviews, including Garrison Kieillor writing for the NYT, is "in the footsteps of Toqueville," my ass."

Chip S. म्हणाले...

I just took a look at a few of the sample pages of A.V. on Amazon--just an awful combination of bad English prose and gallic condescension. BHL seems to be attempting a Tom Wolfe persona, but he sounds more like Rosie O'Donnell. He has almost certainly published the stupidest few pages ever written on the history of baseball.

His account of his visit to Riker's Island does help explain why he's so upset about his bff Dominique's current stay there.

Is there still any talk about amending the Constitution so Arnold could run for President?

Schwarzenegger reveals he had child with staffer

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Arnold Schwarzenegger and his wife, Maria Shriver, separated after the former governor revealed he had fathered a child with a member of their household staff, The Los Angeles Times reported Tuesday.

Beautiful flowers, but any reference to snow or rain right about now will get you 'the look' where I live.

Though I haven't yet seen anyone commence with constructing an ark, the amount of rain we've received this spring is historic.

When Irene posts, I can't help thinking about KYLiz, too.

Interesting! Although, with all the national coverage we have been getting on the floods, I would just like to let the media know that there is a state on the other side of Mississippi that comes before Louisiana that has also been affected. Just fyi.

Well, I can think of quite a bit that would so justify, including the crime of which Strauss Kahne is accused.

Cavorting with the household staff, and him, a governor.

But he does fit right in with the Kennedy clan,eh?

Fen म्हणाले...

Is there still any talk about amending the Constitution so Arnold could run for President?

Nope. Most those I meet who are for it change their minds once they realize they are opening the gate to who would come *after* Arnold.

@Don't Tread 2012 -- Bumper sticker I saw today on my ride to work through Providence's liberal east side:

The road to hell is paved with republicans

I enjoy the irony. The road to hell is paved with Republicans. Republicans yelling "stop!"

"Aren't those also called lillies of the valley?"

You wouldn't ask that if you saw them in person. Thet are much larger. Comically larger. But otherwise very similar.

Ann Althouse म्हणाले...

@rh We have those here too and the Ohioan Meade loves to point them out. He's also big on shooting stars.

Toad Trend म्हणाले...

@Henry

Truthfully, the road to hell was paved with career politicians, both dem and repub.

That's a sticker I'd be happy to promote.

Henry म्हणाले...

@Don't Tread. I don't disagree at all. But the ironic image is what came to my mind when I saw the bumper sticker.

Another favorite is the car that features "PEACE" on one side of the tailgate and "I Hate Peyton Manning" on the other.

Toad Trend म्हणाले...

@Henry

Yep the irony meter definitely moved a bit.

The sticker I've seen that I really like is 'Redistribute My Work Ethic, Not My Wealth'.

They are called summer snowflakes and grow in tallish leafy clumps about 18 to 24 inches high. They grow in my yard in CT too. Snow drops are much smaller and bloom and fade well before the snowflakes show up.

If you have these, don't try to transplant them. They hate being moved and may just up and die...which would be sad indeed as they are one of my garden's spring highlights.
