"A lot of bloggers will just grab stuff and make judgments... I love the fact that he’s successful because he’s not trying to be negative."

The celebrity PR people love the extra-nice blogger, who apparently gets invited everywhere (and makes millions). The blogger's name is Jared Eng, and the blog is called Just Jared. Man, I was just thinking about how nobody's going to use the name Jared anymore. Before the recent massacre, Jared was a good new baby name, likely to be chosen by parents attracted to the ultra-popular "J" names — Jacob, Joshua, Justin — and wanting to get a bit more unusual. But, post-massacre, there's a new thirst for syrup...
[M]ore than a few publicists have taken to nicknaming Mr. Eng the “nice Perez Hilton”...

“I don’t throw anyone under the bus,” he said. “It’s all objective and/or positive.”...

Mr. Eng had a very sheltered childhood, growing up in Fresh Meadows, Queens, the third oldest among five boys. His Chinese-American parents raised him strictly, limiting his television diet to 30 minutes per week....
30 minutes! Outrageous slacking! Somebody call Amy Chua! That boy's a disgrace!

Jared, the "Subway guy" killed (sorry...) the use of that name long before Tucson.

Unknown म्हणाले...

Jared became popular as a boys' name after "The Big Valley" (the eldest son, played by Richard Long - albeit misspelled).

There's always Jonah, Job, Josiah, Jeremiah, Jedediah (although some idiot named their daughter that), and, for unreconstructed Confederates, Jefferson.

I'm surprised Subway hasn't been blamed for the massacre.

There's always John. People forget about that name, thinking it's too common, but it isn't.

I read "Just Jared" every day along with your blog. A little dose of pop culture never hurt anyone. He is refreshingly non nasty and kind of fun. And he can scoop with the best of them, take that Perez!!

Jason was used pretty heavily for awhile.

"I'm surprised Subway hasn't been blamed for the massacre."

No doubt he was tramatized by that far more than inspired by any political aspect.

“This year we’re easily going to gross seven figures.”

Anyone else wonder, when there are literally millions of blogs out there, how some 28 year old kid gets his noticed and is raking in millions of dollars?

“I don’t throw anyone under the bus,” he said. “It’s all objective and/or positive.”...

In other words, its all ass kissing and syncophantism? I mean it is possible to be critical without being negative.

Obviously, a special place in your heart.

Jared was a very popular name when I was in school.

Then there was the TV character who was such a genius he could pretend to be anyone.

James or Jim. The Bible was written by James.

Sure, by the fact that they named their kid Jared you had to know his parents were the kind of wimpy liberals that would allow him to watch TV 30 minutes a week.

If they named him James he would have to read the Bible for 30 minutes a week.

WV: gerec another J name

Being nice is very underrated.

Many of the most enduring personalities and richest entertainers rake in money because they are percieved as being "Nice."

Most of them are monsters.

My grandfather has the name Adolph, not one I can see ever making a comeback.

Watch out, Jared, because once they make you a tool, you're also a fool.

ricpic म्हणाले...

Is the about to retire Regis a monster? Everything I've read about him indicates that he's a genuine nice guy. Not my cup of tea but nice.

Trooper York म्हणाले...

I think for most yuppie parents it doesn't matter what the first name is as long as the middle name is Hussien.

Or is that fad over already?

ricpic म्हणाले...

I rather doubt anyone's ever named their kid Judas.

Trooper York म्हणाले...

Regis is a high priest in the cult of Cthulhu.

How do you think he has been so successful all these years with no discernable talent?

Trooper York म्हणाले...

I was thinking of the evil trio of Oprah, Ellen and Rosie.

You can't find bigger monster outside of a Todd Browning flick.

Trooper York म्हणाले...

Johnny Carson was another one who came off as a nice guy but was a pretty terrible person off the air.

On the other hand Lon Chaney would give you the shirt off his back. Well off his hump.

Clyde म्हणाले...

I'm sure that Jared's going to go over a cliff just like John did in 1865 and Mark and David did in 1980. Oh, wait...

Now, Adolf, there is a name that is irredeemably unpopular. I don't see Sirhan making a big comeback, either.

Adolf used to be a reasonably common name but with the rise of Hitler, a lot of them changed their name. In one of my history books, there was a mention of a tough old Army Master Sergeant named Adolf Hitler. When asked if he was going to change his name, his reply was "Let the other fellow change his!"

Two of my grandsons are named Jason and Jordan. My next door neighbor has a 13 year old boy named Mackenzie and a 10 year old daughter named Kelsey. They're good kids but I suspect they've caught some grief over their names. After all, about the only other person named Mackenzie is the actress from "One Day at a Time" and when I hear the name Kelsey, I think of "Frasier."

I see that Froggyprager already beat me to that thought, although I didn't read the comments before having my say.

He made good candy. You try to make good candy -- 65 times a day, every day, for years, which is what he does.

When I taught swimming as my college summer job, it seemed all the boys were named Jason, Joshua, or Jeremy. The girls were all Brooke, Alexis and Crystal.

Now all the boys are Zachary and Tyler.

Interesting. Is good candy better than orange pancakes? ;-)

Well its probably not a surprise though since he admits he won't say a bad thing about celebrities. I mean if you're Miley Cyrus you'd go with the blogger who will write glowing things rather than say, 'did you see Hannah Montana hitting that bong on Youtube!?' Yeah I'd make sure he got A-listed too.

If his parents had just had the foresight to deny him food and water more often, he might have been able to make something of himself.

Speaking of Mrs. Chua, I don't see what the whole hubabaloo is about her belief Chinese mothers are superior. Correct me if I am wrong but doesn't Thomas Friedman think China is the cats meow and how we should try and emulate them? CNN has a link to Time saying how China does capitalism soooooo much better than we do. Why not motherhood? What's the big deal?

victoria म्हणाले...

Oh, by the way, Robert Young, dad on "Father Knows Best" and the venerable "Marcus Welby" one of the nastiest meanest people in life. I worked at Universal Studios in the early 70's while in college and we were told to steer clear of him as he had a horrific temper. If a tourguide pointed him out on a tour, his/her name was taken down and they were suspended. Mean, hateful man.

Not China as a whole, but Hong Kong sure as hell does capitalism a lot better than we do. We can't even manage to do capitalism better than Canada does, these days.
